Gift of Magi short story criticism

This story is about Della and James Young. They are a poor couple who live in New York. They hardly earned enough so they did not get money to save. It was already the eve of Christmas, and Della did not have money to buy a present for her husband. She just had I dollar and seventy-five cents. This amount could not buy any worthy present. She felt so sad and frustrated and she could not help crying. She eventually decided to sell her hair and use the money to buy the present (Porter, 2006). Della’s character reveals great love and commitment to her husband. Despite the challenges of poverty, she shows determination and strong will.

Her hair and Jim’s watch were the most valuable things to this couple. Jim had inherited the watch from his father. His grandfather had it too so it was to be passed on to him. Della walked to Madame Sofronie’s store and sold her hair at twenty dollars. After receiving the money, she started her search for Jim’s present. Finally, she saw a chain for a watch. It perfectly suited Jim’s watch. She almost thought it was supposed to belong to Jim. They accepted to sell it to her at twenty-one dollars and she happily took it with her. Though the watch and hair were important to this couple, they did not surpass the love they had for each other (Porter, 2006).

At home, her husband arrived and got surprised at Della’s hair. She thought he was unhappy with her because she had taken away something they both treasured, without informing him. On the contrary, that was not the reason at all. In fact, he said nothing would make him love her less than he did (Henry, & Zweger, 57). Jim told Della to open the present he got for her. They were combs made from tortoise shells. She felt sad but grateful and the only thing she could tell him was that her hair would grow fast. It was her turn to present her gift. She showed him the chain for his watch and asked him to remove it. Jim was hesitant and he tried to change the subject. He told his wife that he had to sell the watch to afford the combs. It shows some irony but the greatest lesson is the sacrifice they made for each other because of love.

The story has themes of love, sacrifice, determination, poverty and wealth. Love is the greatest theme in this story. The couple is poor but both of them go out of their way to make each other happy. There is a mutual feeling of commitment. They both plan to buy gifts without consulting each other. This is a sign they care about each other and always think positively about the other partner. Their poverty does not come in between there love. Jim tells his wife that nothing she would change about he look that would make him love her less. They are not angry at each other because the other spouse sold a valuable item without consulting. They both understand it was all about love (Adams, Andy et al, 2000).

The gold pocket watch and Della’s hair were the most important things to this couple. It is amazing how both of them decide to give them up the same time for presents. According to the story, Della did not hesitate selling her hair. On the other hand, Jim did not also think twice about selling a souvenir for her wife’s happiness. It is quite uncommon to sell hair or any other component of the body. If it would happen, it is expected that the reason is a very critical issue. Regardless to this, Della goes ahead and sells her hair to buy a present. She was also very willing to do anything possible to make her husband happy.

The couple lives from hand to mouth. This is why they have to sell their valuables to buy simple things like presents. Jim used to earn thirty dollars a week but it reduced to twenty dollars. She had tried to save every penny she could but she only managed to get one dollar and seventy-five cents. The story says that sixty cents of that money was even in pennies. The story depicts the effects poverty among the people. They are both physical and psychological. Della feels frustrated and cries when she realizes she cannot get a present for her husband. She is forced to sell uncommon commodities to afford what she wants. This really shows high level of poverty. It seems she does not have a source of income and they just survive with the husband’s income. There is a minor theme of wealth depicted by the gold pocket watch. It was given to Jim’s father by grandfather and then to Jim. It seems Jim was raised in a well off family because it could afford a pocket gold watch (Henry, 1992).

The author has used different styles in her work. The most prominent is the symbol of magi. This were the three wise me who took gifts to the baby on the manger. Their names were Balthazar, Melchior and Gaspar. All three were kings of Arabia, Persia and India respectively. They were from east and they traveled to Bethlehem to see the baby and give him gifts. They gave the baby gold, frankincense and myrrh. The presents were valuable but the magi valued the life and the presence of the world (Henry, & Zweger, 91).

Della and Jim are also considered to act like the wise men. The wise men carefully thought about the gifts to take to the baby. It is interesting to observe their humility. They were kings yet they went looking for the baby to worship him. Kings are selfish and feel superior. This is why Herod wanted to murder the baby. He did not want competition. The magi are not proud and arrogant. They considered the baby to be a king too. The same kind of humility is seen in the Young family. They chose wise gifts and went to preset them. Della and Jim carefully figured out how to get gifts for each other. Just like the way the magi traveled far, is equivalent to how the couple went out of their way to get the presents for each other. Though they were simple presents, they were very important to them (Adams, Andy et al, 2000).

Irony is depicted in this story. It was ironical for the couple to go t the extreme ends and the gifts became irrelevant to them at that moment. Della sold her hair yet Jim had bought her combs for Christmas. This was after selling his valuable pocket watch. Della decides to cut off her hair and sell to buy a chain for Jim’s watch. When the two meet to present their gifts to each other, they realize what is wrong (Henry, 1992). However, the most important thing is the intention of the action. They traded their valuables because of love. They did no get angry or regret their actions because they believed it was worth the effort. Della will just have to wait for her hair to grow and Jim will figure out something with the chain.

The story has made of use of number three as a symbol. The story has three characters namely Della, James and Sofronie. When Della is trying to analyze how much there is for her to buy a present, she counts her money thrice. This could be a sign of disbelief and disappointment because she does not have enough money (Porter, 2006). The persona says that life consists of sobbing, sniffling and smiling. These are three types of emotions mostly experienced by poor people. They do not have enough so they lament and feel sad but sometimes they get a reason to smile.

In “The Gift of the Magi,” the number three tends to appear prominently in the entire story. This symbolism and allusion first appears in the title of the story. The Magi are also known as the three wise men that traveled a long distance following the star in the search of the baby Jesus. In addition, these three Magi brought with them three gifts to present to this child, the gifts being gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In the belief that he was the promised one, the three wise men presented these three gifts to him unselfishly (Henry, 1992).

The symbolism of number three is further used the types of gifts that the queen of Sheba brought King Solomon. In order to display her royal nature, the queen brought with her spices, gold and jewels to present the wise king. The main characters depicted in the story also number to three: Della, Jim, and Madame Sofronie (Adams, Andy et al, 2000).

The setting of this story is in New York. The descriptions given by the author suggest it is in this city. The narrator talks of the couple living in a decent apartment and Della went to the hair shop across the street, from their apartment. He mentions an amusement park that is found in New York. It is called Coney Island. It is the most popular park in this city and it is Brooklyn. Another reason suggesting the setting of this story is where the author lived when he wrote and published this story. He lived in New York therefore; he used the city as the setting of his story (Moser & Henry, 79).

There are two main characters and one minor character. The major ones are Della and James and the minor is the hair shop owner called Sofronie. Della takes up a character of a woman with a positive attitude and never gives up. Even when money is not enough, she figures out what to do. She is submissive, loving and determined. She does everything possible to get a gift for his husband. It is evident she always wanted to make her husband happy. When she cuts her hair, she tries to style it appropriately and made nice food for her husband. She hoped that he would not be upset with her (Henry, & Zweger, 132).

James Young is a committed husband who evidently shows his love for his wife. He sells a valuable gold watch to buy her wife a simple present for Christmas. This is a noble act and it shows how much he could sacrifice for the happiness of his wife. He is good at adjusting to change. When she notices her wife has cut her hair it does not alter his love for her. What only worries him is that she will not use the combs he bought her. The minor character Sofronie is the owner of the shop where Della sold her hair. This story is a good example of lessons about love (Sauber, & Henry, 110).

Women’s issues in American Politics

During our grandparents’ time, a woman’s place was considered to be in the kitchen or giving birth and raising children. It’s not easy to change tradition overnight, so this was passed on from generation to generation and we grew up knowing that our mothers job was to cook and feed us well in order to bring up a happy family. This is why during the nineteenth century some American women became involved in abolitionism to end this tradition in the United States. This was done to confront men who did not think that women should play a role in social or political affairs (Rourke,110).

Without asking for anything in return, they worked their backs off to make sure that we never go without food, a place to sleep, and more importantly love. The women whom we owe our lives to are the same women that we discriminate against, the same women we under appreciate and insult. It is a shame since we ought to be proud, very proud of the women in our lives. Were it not for them we would not be who we are and where we are today. They brought out the good in us; they made us a better people. We owe them much respect, we owe them our gratitude.

In this year coming general elections we ought to vote for a leader who has the best interest of women at heart. A leader who is more considerate when it comes to women’s issues, a leader who listens, acts, and a leader who is not selfish. Governor Eric George McLain the governor of Illinois would be the perfect man for the job. He has fought more for the rights of women in society as an individual than the society has in the last four years. He believes that a woman is just as important as man is. He believes involving women in reform and law making decisions will take this state to a higher level. He promises to fight for women rights to the end. His stand is to ensure that every woman is respected as a person and is able to enjoy her every right as a woman.

The governor has built colleges and universities and included women education in their programmer in order to educate women of their rights in society. He has opened up savings and credit societies in different parts of the state, to help women save and get loans to start up businesses or expand the ones they already have. In his campaign, he promises to amend the constitution for gender equality, by doing this women will have equal rights to men. Women will be able to inherit property, have equal representation in parliament and own businesses. A woman will be considered an important person in society. Respected and appreciated.

No matter how good the governor’s promises sound at the end of the day, he is a politician. We all know all politicians play dirty politics. Dirty politics often has more to do with motive than the substance of the decision; it is an important part of the political landscape and key reason for building rigidity and oversight mechanism into institutions as part of the rule of law (Doremus & Tarlock, 152).

White Man’s Burden

Coming from a worldwide historical perceptive, the most noticeable historical trend in the late nineteenth century was European domination of other nations. This domination took many forms ranging annexation, economic penetration, imperialism, as well as gunship diplomacy. In this case, there was no global region free from European colonization, adventurers, explorers, merchants or western missionaries. This domination, otherwise known as imperialism, mostly resulted in resistance from the natives of the dominated nations (Jordheim 2011, 16). To the Europeans however, they had relevant social, religious, and cultural excuses for their domination.

Resistance among the non-European nations was usually answered with the Gunship diplomacy. This was an aggressive diplomatic activity executed through explicit or implicit implementation of naval or military power. This period witnessed the constructed of relatively shallow draughts steel hulled vessels referred to s gunboats. These ships were heavily armed thus providing new opportunities of attacking options towards any resistance or otherwise imperial competition from other European powers (Jordheim 2011, 25). In the United States case, gunship diplomacy as normally associated Washington’s military and diplomatic interventions in the Caribbean during the twentieth century period.

The social reasons used to justify gunship diplomacy and imperialism involved ideologies on holding together fractured societies as well as preserving the existing the existing social order. Another major social excuse used for justifying gunship diplomacy and imperialism lies behind the European belief in social Darwinism. However, this concept had nothing to do with what Darwin applied in his theories. It was more of a euphemism method of suppression of altruism. Normally, this would mean that people were left to die without any concern paid to them in terms of food shelter or clothing (Jordheim 2011, 35).

The other social excuse normally given for justifying diplomacy and imperialism is the great desire to spread the western culture to other regions. The European nations had great belief that they were far superior to the less developed and primitive communities of the dominated African countries. To them this was sufficient reason to impose imperialism by spreading their societal values. At some point, this was considered to have bourn negative implications but this form of imperialism had a positive impact on the eastern region. Ultimately, these communities were introduced to new forms of civilization such as technology as wells a wider variety of foodstuffs (Jordheim 2011, 57). In addition, the western community had an increased sense of confidence and thus felt they can explore other parts of the world such as the eastern region.

Religion is also a frequently used excuse for imperialism and gunship diplomacy expansion to the eastern society. In this case, this was just a cloaking excuse to extend a nation’s political and economic interests to other communities in the name of religion. This was mainly done through governments that intended to use religious imperialism as a means of gaining support for their invasion plans. It was either this measure or conservative Christianity through the form of missionaries that had a view of spreading Christianity to all corners of the globe. Missionaries emerged in the twentieth century period considering themselves obligated to spread their religion to the heathenish Eastern regions.

However, rather than a theological point of view, missionaries in the nineteenth century had a view of being culturally invasive. They lacked an explicit view of separating evangelism from cultural and political issues. With regard to the missionary point of view, they argued that their movement was on the beginning phase against secular rationalism and therefore were dully justified for their imperial diplomacy. However, their endeavors were seen as parts of attempting to instill cultural pre eminence in the dominated communities (Jordheim 2011, 84). Other excuses involved attempts to end slave trade in Africa, and their achievement of this particular feat was greatly commended.

According to the western civilization, they possessed superior culture to the inferior one practiced by the eastern inhabitants. In this case, imperialism was implemented for the sole creation and maintenance of relationships among civilization where the culture of the more powerful civilization was favored. This form of imperialism took several forms such as formal polices, attitude, military which in this case was gunship diplomacy when reinforcing cultural homogeny. The main excuses offered in support of cultural imperialism and gunship diplomacy therefore lay behind spreading the superior European culture to the Eastern region.

Other than extending their own culture, the western nations gave an excuse of an exploratory view. In this case, they argued that they were also interested in learning what eastern communities undertook in their cultural practices. Moreover, they saw it fit to practice imperialism and gunship diplomacy in the Eastern region as a means of easing their fast growing populations (Jordheim 2011, 94). Finally, the European imperialists had a view of advancing their exploration in oversees traveling. Since taking oversea journeys was their culture, they were therefore justified to extend their control over the Eastern region, especially Africa.

In today’s western part, these tactics are less often employed but few cases of religious and cultural imperialism do emerge, but the idea of gunship diplomacy is no longer implemented. Communities being imperialized with new forms of religion and culture today have a choice of either accepting or rejecting. It is no longer imposed on them similar to the nineteenth century imperialistic period. For example, the Christian community is still engaging in non-violent activities of instilling their religion to non-believers. In the United States for example, the Chinese culture has notably been instilled in the society such as their food delicacies in certain states. However, it has been noted that the Muslim community in the recent past has attempted to dictate its religious and cultural beliefs to other communities through violent means. A good example is 11 September 2001 attack on the American Embassy New York in the United States of America (Jordheim 2011, 43). This action was greatly condemned and in one way or another could be regarded as gunship diplomacy.

EBay.com is an international company that deals in the online auctions whereby people from different locations in the world have a platform to sell and buy things via the internet. The company was founded in the year 1995 when the electronic commerce was in vogue coupled by what people knew as the ‘dot.com’ bubble-which was the popularization of the internet resulting in huge demand for the internet. The company soon spread its presence by contracting with other companies to provide services such as electronic ticketing of plane tickets. Thus, electronic commerce can be defined as the sale and provision of services or goods via electronic means such as the internet and computer networks. Whereas internet business can be defined, as conduct or provision of goods and se4rvices via the worldwide web relying on the presence of a virtual stores (Harvard Business Publishing).

The transformation of EBay from electronic commerce was necessitated by the growth in demand for in time services by the consumers who wanted a platform that would enable them to purchase goods and services at the comfort of their offices or homes. In addition, competition by new and existing market players in the market forced the company to redefine its strategy in the market such that it could remain a force to reckon with in the market. The returns attributed to adoption of an internet business strategy in comparison to an electronic commerce model would best arrive at a conclusion on the best model for the business (Burn &Barnett, 2002).

In a dynamic information technology era that things are changing with each passing day, there is need for strategies that conform to the diverse information technology market. New innovative products and services are developed almost on a daily basis hence the company outlines ways to keep up with the pace of an evolving market (Harvard Business Publishing). To keep in line with the presence of competitors the company incorporates what is known as the five competitive forces that aid in the survival of a volatile market. The five forces that drive competition that necessitated for new strategies by EBay, which are the presence of identical products and services in the market at relatively lower prices. Existing competitors who are not new to a market re-evaluate their own strategies and opt to develop new products or services that are appealing to consumers. Innovation is driving force for staying relevant in a volatile market especially in the age of information technology.

The presence of new entrants is also a major factor that necessitates formation of new strategies in the market. New entrants in the market come up with new identical products that are maybe better in different aspects, this might reduce the market influence of the company, thus a company is forced to implement new ways that will ward off the new competitors and maintain their market share or even increase their market share (Burn &Barnett, 2002). Moreover, increase in the bargaining power of the consumers in the market calls for development of new strategies in order to meet the new market conditions and trends without suffering operational losses. Furthermore, an increase in the bargaining power of suppliers such that they are able to increase the prices of their supplies without prior negotiation prompts the company to think new ways that will enable survival in a market that has high operational costs.

In a dynamic and evolving market, the driving force is competition. The use of the five forces to the advantage of EBay is never bound to fail because such forces are applied through out all kinds of markets. However, failure of such strategies would necessitate the new ways of ding business such as new marketing to re-establish the presence of the company in the market. Pricing is also another determinant when a customer is tuck between choosing EBay and other competitors. The use of pricing would attract more consumers because the current trends show that consumers have become price sensitive even for meager differences in price (Burn &Barnett, 2002).

Providing consumers with competitive prices for provision of services would ensure that EBay has a substantial number of clients and remains a force to reckon with in the market. Improved quality of service is another factor that can be changed in the market. Some consumers pay for service at whatever price so long as the services meet the best quality in the market. Quality should never be compromised to maintain customers who are loyal to EBay. In addition, quality should be improved to improve the goodwill of EBay in the company (Harvard Business Publishing).

Research and development of new products can be an advantage to the company such that new innovative products can be developed with focus son the consumer needs and preferences in mind when developing the new products. This creates competitive advantage over other competitors in the market.

Ali-Kindi History Focusing on Cryptography

Introduction

Cryptography is a technique that is used by people when they are communicating in the presence of a third (Stallings, 2011). In the past, the use of cryptography was not as wide as present. Many people are using coding information so that unwanted third parties cannot view them. For instance, terrorists use coded information to communicate when they are preparing to make terrorism attacks. In this case, the other groups that are being targeted use cryptography to encode this information to establish the plans of the enemies (Stallings, 2011). The process of encoding involves creating of ciphers. For this reason, it is good to understand, the history Ali-Kindi, who is believed to have initiated cryptography, and how he created this idea.

Discussion

Abu Yusuf Ya qūb ibn Ishaq al-Sabbah al-Kindī commonly known as Ali-Kindi is a Muslim philosopher (Khan, 2008). In most case, he is referred by people as the philosopher of the Arabs. This is because he was the first Arab philosopher. He was born in Kufa as a descendant of the Kinda tribe (Khan, 2008). He pursued his education in Kufa be later on going for further studies in Baghdad. He became an Arab philosopher, physician, musician and a mathematician (Khan, 2008). For this reason, he became a prominent figure in the house of wisdom and received appointments from several Abbasids of the Abbasid dynasty. It is worth noting that Ali-Kindi was one time employed as a calligrapher due to his beautiful work of calligraphy.

In his appointments, Ali-Kindi played several roles in his appointments. One of them was to interpret Greek reading to Islamic. This led to the promotion of Greek reading to the Muslim world. As a result, he ended up writing many original readings from adapted from Greek incorporated to Islam. Secondly, he was expected to introduce Indian numerical to Islam and Christianity. In all his work, it required him to break a code so that he could be able to translate a reading into Islam. As a result, he initiated cryptography by developing ciphers using mathematics to break codes.

Ali-Kindi began cryptography in his early stages when he was appointed by Abbasid. At first, he did not think of breaking codes and developing ciphers so that he could be able to understand the hidden meaning. He used to work normally and translate the different Hindu or Greek readings into Islam and Christianity. However, through the performance of his duties, Ali-Kindi noted that when he was translating there was a common occurrence in trends in most of the readings. This showed that there was a hidden code in the readings and it required a code to break them.

After realizing this, Ali-Kindi started using his mathematics knowledge to create ciphers for the purposes of breaking the codes. He did this by using several Indian readings that he was meant to translate to Islam and Christianity (Olson, 2011). He studied the readings carefully so that he could come with a common frequency where he will be able to create ciphers that will break the hidden code in the readings. At first, it was not that easy for Ali-Kindi because there were several instances where e failed to break the code leading to frustrations. At one point Ali-Kindi almost quit developing codes due to the amount of time and energy he had spent developing ciphers to break the codes.

Finally, at around Ad 800 Ali-Kindi developed the first ciphers that were used to break the codes in the different readings. It was so fascinating that he was able to cipher many readings and translate them with the shortest time possible. In the beginning, people did not understand cryptography because they saw it be a complicated method. Additionally, not many people were literate like Ali-Kindi, henceforth it was a bit difficult for the people because the knowledge that Ali-Kindi had was not available to everybody even those who were learned. For this reasons, Ali-Kindi decided to write a book explaining the different codes.

Ali-Kindi wrote the book for making people understand the process of cryptography. In the book, Ali-Kindi described his first cryptanalysis techniques where he used Arab phonetics, syntax and polyalphabetic ciphers (Olson, 2011). In this process, Ali-Kindi also established the first descriptions on frequency analysis using the cryptanalysis frequencies. In this case, Ali-Kindi was trying to educate people how to cipher information and encode from its raw for to a way that is readable by the third party.

Finally, Ali-Kindi continued to write other books based cryptography so that he could be able to educate people. After his death, Most of his work was lost due to the wars that were occurring between in the Islamic community where the different dynasties were fighting. Additionally, the different libraries present at that time were also destroyed by the different invasions that were constantly occurring (El-Konaissi, 2003). For this reason, most of his work in cryptography took time before other scholars and historians could revise and apply.

Conclusion

Cryptography is one of the techniques of hiding encoding information between two parties who do not want a third party decipher. In the recent past, after the different terror attacks, different governments have introduced cryptography as part of their security system so that they can know what their enemies are planning and at the same time, they can transfer information from a place to without being. All of this can be attribute to the Arab Philosopher Ali-Kindi who first initiated cryptography when he was translating Greek and Indian writings into Islam and Christianity.

Finding Solace in Fantasy

Introduction

Grieve, frustrations, stress and depressions make people to feel alone and alienated, as though they were the only people existent in this planet. In most cases, these feelings make the affected people engage in fantasies. Some fantasies portray what the subjects would wish to accomplish, become or experience while some fantasies give the audience the state the subjects are in. The poem written by Robert Frost, Acquainted with the Night and the song done by Radiohead, Subterranean Homesick Alien, are examples of people going through such emotions. The writers of both works are lonely, alienated yet they yearn for solace through their thoughts and fantasies while “Acquainted with the Night” emphasizes on solitude; however, “Subterranean Homesick Alien” stresses on finding solace in fantasy.

Discussion

One of the main themes in these two works is the theme of solitide. The word “night” used in both works is a representation of the solitude in the personas. In the poem, the writer uses “I have been one acquainted with the night” (stanza one, line one) while the songwriter uses the words “late at night when am driving” (stanza five line two) in order to bring in the night aspect. Night hours portray loneliness. They portray the hardships, sorrow and sadness in a person’s life. However, these two writers also portray different aspects of the night. While the persona in the poem uses the night to wallow in his misery and the state of his misfortune, the persona in the song uses the night to fantasize on an adventure that would cheer him up.

To explain this further, the persona in Acquainted talks about how he has “outwalked the furthest city light,” (stanza one line three) and “looked down the saddest city lane,” (stanza two line one). These lines are reflections of the misery he has gone through yet he seems to take advantage of it in order to fantasize. He tries to give the audience a description of the depth and the intensity in his misfortune. On the other hand, the persona in the song is using the night to fantasize. He would “wish that they’d [aliens] swoop down in a country lane, late at night when [he is] driving,” (stanza five lines one and two). This fantasy shows that the persona is ready to explore another adventurous part of his life despite his misery. He is ready to look at the world from a fresh perspective since he would be watching the world when he is in an alien’s ship.

Additionally, the word “I” is also used to emphasize on the solitude in the personas’ lives. In Acquainted, the persona has used the word “I” in each of the stanzas apart from the forth one. The persona has also used the word “1” in all the stanzas apart from the third and forth stanzas. However, these two personas used the word in order to portray different aspect of their lives. In Acquainted, the word is used in order to put more emphasis on the character’s misery. The persona was the only one going through these troubles without the consolation or the comfort of any other people. On the other hard, the song bends towards the persona’s wish to get away from his troubles and vie the world from a different perspective, “show me the world as I’d love to see it,” (stanza five line four).

Since it is already established that the personas in the works are in solitude, it is also revelatory that they view their solitude in diverse perspectives. For example, the persona in the song is willing to associate his life with other individuals while the persona in the poem repels them. In the second and third lines of the poem stanzas, he states that, “I have passed by the watchman on his beat, And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain”. This showed that he is not ready to show other people of the pain he is going through either by words or by his body expressions. This further explains why he is avoiding eye contact. On the other hand, the persona in the poem explains that he would “tell all his friends” about his adventure in the alien’s ship although they would think that he had become mad.

In both works, the cause of the solitude and the loneliness has not been identified. Both personas in the works just talk about their reactions to the unknown miseries although they do not specifically point out the source of their misery or the misery/misfortune. This aspect of the works shows that they are not willing to tell the audience about themselves. They are not willing to reveal more about themselves to the audience. However, the persona in the song gives more hope to his situation as compared to the persona in the poem. While the poem ends with the persona’s wallow of how he has been acquainted with the night, the persona in the song explains that he will successfully come through the situation. The last stanza of the song explains that he is ready to show his friend the stars and the meaning of life even though they would shut him away.

Conclusion

Both works portray the theme of solitude, which is one of the main themes in the works. However, they portray diverse aspects of the theme. While the persona in the poem is focuses on his misfortune and himself, the persona in the song fantasizes of ways in which he could take advantage of his misery. He also wants to engage with others in order to avoid focusing on his negative side of life. He is also sure that he will positively make it through the misfortune even though he will be shut away by his friends. The persona in the poem avoids other people contact whether it is emotional or physical. He starts by giving the audience a hopeless dimension to his problems and ends the poem in the same note. In the poem, the persona will end up in solitude.

Synergy in Information Systems

Introduction

Synergy refers to the resultant effect realized by merging two agents with the aim of having a greater resultant effect than the sum of the individual effects of the merging agents. Technically, through synergism, one plus one equals three as opposed to two. Synergy in the information realm is an emerging research topic owing to the significant potential in understanding and calculating the business value of IT. Other fields such as healthcare, chemistry and biology have conducted in depth studies on the topic and in the process bringing about significant benefits on the respective fields.

However, the same is yet to be realized in the realm of information technology especially in the field of information systems. This can change if the field of IT intuitively merges the corporate field with the well-defined computer science field. The field of information systems only contains scanty and yet inconclusive research in information regarding the benefits of executing synergies in information systems. In particular, we find current research attempting to find out the analyzing the IT business value face this topic by relating computer science directly to the performance of the corporate firm.

This approach is neither reliable nor can it provide into conclusive results mainly due to its reductionism nature. This is because the approach tends to disregard the synergistic significances that are brought about by information technology. In addition, this approach tends to overlook the potential transitional variables between IT and the performance of corporate industries where business value tends to be dependant upon (Herbig, and Genestre, 1996).

It has been widely acknowledged that the combined benefits that arise from the combination, incorporation and utilization of IT and industrial organizational resources are not conclusively known by the present literature in information systems business value. Researchers are therefore encouraged to look into the analysis of cross-unit synergies in information systems since the field still lies ignorant of the present instruments that capture synergies that are IT related and are incorporated by business firms. Research in the realm of information systems indicates that synergies that result from the mergence of IT and corporate resources are not conclusively realized in the IT business value literature. This apparent lack of knowledge has the effect of underrating the business value of IT.

In view of this apparent gap, emerging studies in information studies attempt to look into synergy in Information Technology and how it influences performance of business entities. These studies indicate that the synergistic mergence of information systems and other business organizational resources can bring about the improved effectiveness and efficiency of business performance. This view is availed through a resource-based view’s (RBV) perception. As an illustration, a research conducted by Tanriverdi (2006), indicates that the synergy of information systems resulted into about two percent of the variance in the performance of business entities. This figure represents a good proportion in terms of economic value.

Another research that asserts this result is that conducted by Zhu (2004). The research adds that synergy through the mergence of IT and corporate organizational resources certainly bring about a value proposition that is based on the business’ performance. Due to the essential nature of synergy in information systems in realizing the business value of IT in addition to its emerging significance as a crucial research topic and because information systems synergy has not  been conclusively researched in terms of its significance and potential, it is therefore imperative that an insightful research on the subject matter is conducted.

The execution of such a research will bring about the inclusion of potential IT synergy construct into the corporate business resource value research framework. This will act as a transitional element and assist in the realization of additional variances in corporate performance that are brought about by factors closely knitted with IT.

Research Significance

Scholastic Significance

The inclusion of information systems synergy model into the research structure of IT business value forms one of the basic significance of the anticipated study. Although current studies regarding the research on the aspect of quantitative corporate value of IT seem to have taken a divergent direction from that of looking into the productivity inconsistency, the frailty of conjoining information systems leads directly to how a business entity performs. This has received much criticism because the reductionism approach fails to take into account the synergy that may result into enhanced corporate performance. In fact, the benefits of overall IT synergy have been utterly ignored by the existing It corporate entities value literature.

This scarceness of information regarding information synergy wile analyzing the corporate entity value of IT tends to underrate the significance of information synergy in the enhancement of the performance of business entities. Moreover, it realizes limitations concerning the potential transitional variables that exist between information systems and the performance of corporate firms and their outcomes through which business value is highly dependent.

Based on this, the involvement of the information system synergy into the corporate entity value research construct as a transitional element will bring about a more conclusive image in terms of the IS payoff in addition to supplementing the research construct. This adds to the need of increasing research efforts into the lacking connection between IS investment and the performance of business entities. This also conforms to Barua et al.’s (1995) transitional value proposition. With this regard, the intended study purposes to significantly decrease the present limitations of the business value of IS and assist in the illumination of additional variances in business entity performance that are realized by IS related aspects through the consideration of IS synergy (Berg, M. (1999).

The involvement of the IS synergy strategy model into the IT organizational value research construct necessitates the operational of the model. This operation is not reliant on a legitimate conceptualization of IS synergy. Currently, the present studies are now attempting to conceptualize the effects of IS synergy that are present between IT and other corporate resources. However, these are limited in terms of having a received definition of IS synergy. This is especially so in the context of IT corporate value research. In fact, the way the term synergy is conceptualized in the IS literature tend to be thrown around at the convenience of the researcher. This makes the term ambiguous and consequently unreliable.

This lack of a legitimate definition of IS synergy out rightly leads to inherent limitations in coming up with cumulative knowledge. Therefore, it is beneficial to initially conceptualize IS synergy. This is necessary if the IS literature for any relevance of consequent processes that include the investigation of the concept. This is primarily because effective conceptualizations form the foundation of science upon which further prepositions can be forwarded. Only after the full and definite conceptualization of IS synergy that those who intend to research on the topic can are able to account and override the limitations involved in the analysis of the performance resulting from IS on corporate business entities and further enabling the increase in comparable studies that lie within the same theoretical base.

In addition, a relevant conceptualization of the synergy of IS brings about legitimate and reasonable concept extensions and associations that tend to be critical in highlighting research boundaries, outlining possible historical experiences and moderators, in addition to the development of a structure or a nomological association for systematic and conclusive research. The nomological network comprises of possible historical experiences and knowledge and moderators pertaining to the synergy of IS. These make it possible to perform empirical analysis of the synergy of IS in addition to other related factors. This further provides deep knowledge regarding the underpinning resource framework through which strategies for proper execution and attainment of competitive advantage can be set up and supports the current research structure on the corporate value of IS.

With this in mind, the conceptualization synergy of IS enables the development of the research on the theoretical foundation for information systems that are particularly related to synergy. The tools for analyzing the synergy of IS founded on the conceptualization of synergy are one of the academic benefits of the intended study. The design of a relevant tool for the analysis of the synergy of IS forms a natural addition to the term since the characterization of synergy of IS insightfully and definitely outlines concept expansion and association.

The definition of concept expansion and association does not merely serve to indicate the properties upheld by IS synergy but also goes to the lengths of specifying the  category of items that are relevant and are identified by IS synergy. Although researches are urged to conduct more studies focusing on the analysis of cross-unit IS synergies, these are yet to be properly undertaken. With this regard, the development of an instrument will enable the answering of preceding calls and the fulfillment of the research limitation in addition to making it possible for studies conducted in the future to effectively analyze the synergy of IS in a way that is predominantly formal and systematic.

In summary, the inclusion of the synergy of IS framework in the current IT corporate research construct to provide pertinent information required the initial conceptualization of the synergy of IS. Secondly, the above needs to by set in operation. The conceptualization of the synergy of IS, the design of an instrument for the measurement of IS synergy can be associated with the performance of corporate business entities. This can be performed together with the inclusion of the IS synergy framework into the research construct of the IS business value and provide pertinent information on the way organizational factors influence the synergy of IS and how information systems synergy contributes to the overall performance of the business entity. The results of the research will further develop a foundation for future research regarding business strategies that result into efficiency in the allocation and utilization of resources for the production of optimal benefits that are synergistic in nature.

Practical Significance

The tool that is designed by the intended study for the analysis of IS synergy and the relational representatives and historical experiences provide a foundation for the development of a measuring tool or a score-card that enable business entities to analyze the level of synergy that exists between their IT and other recourses of the firm. The proper analysis of IS synergy brings about practical importance for the business entities since by measuring the synergy; it is possible for the administration to properly and effectively manage it.

Although the IS synergy is impossible to be conclusively managed, the ability of evaluating it enables the business entities to achieve invaluable information on the performance of its resource allocation and mergence and realize the altering ability of complementary resources. Here, the firms are able to realize the synergetic effect where a combination of two or more agents brings about a greater combined effect in comparison to the sum of their individual effects.

Furthermore, the measuring instrument for the benefits of resource allocation can be used as a tool for self-diagnostic. Its utilization will enable the business firms to analyze critical areas of their organizational structure that is important for enhancing and capturing synergy. This self-diagnostic tool enables the business firms to identify recourse allocations that tend to provide minimal benefits and later execute the relevant correctional measures. As an illustration, in using the measuring instrument, business entities are able to measure the competence of their information systems and their capabilities that are critical for the exploitation of the IS synergy. In fact, the capture of synergies is the overall ambition of large business firms and lies at the helm of corporate strategy (Eisenhardt and Galunic 2000).

In addition, the intended study goes to the lengths of providing business entities with the relevant knowledge pertaining to the appreciation of why and how some of these are limited in generating or capturing optimal IS synergy that comes about from the combinational utilization if instruments of information technology and the assets of the corporate firm. In particular, the IS synergy framework and its historical experiences including research can bring to light aspects that are crucial for consideration if the corporate entities are to realize IS synergy and representatives of IS synergy from enabling the enhancement of the performance of the business entity.

Finally, since the intended research goes to the lengths of bringing to light the advantages that can be realized when proper aspects information services and other organizational resources are merged together for enhanced combination, the business entities end up being more assured when obtaining and allocating recourses that posses the desired characteristics. As an illustration, business entities normally identify productive investments by taking into account and the analysis of financial indicators that include the return on investment (ROI) and others. However, when the prospective synergistic impacts are realized, business ventures that bear negative return on investment (ROI) or net present value (NPV) can still be considered for purchase since these may bear the relevant characteristics that are complementary to already acquired resources. The combination of these two resources has the potential of producing benefits that transcend financial justification (Bossen, 2002).

Research Questions

With this regard, the proposed research purposes to pursue conclusive answers to the following research questions.

  • What is the meaning of information systems synergy regarding corporate ventures?
  • What are the historical experiences and representatives that are associated with the production, capture and realization information system synergy?
  • How much variance is brought about by IS synergy in the performance by business entities?

Literature Review

The performance of literature review brings to light that IS synergy takes into account the synergies that are realized at the resource and process level in addition to the one that come about from the intra and inter organizational communications. First, Bharadwaj, (2000), finds that synergy is realized within the information technology recourses. This realization is inclusive of the company assets and capabilities. As an illustration, Meredith and Camm (1989), find that the synergies are produced when a company utilizes different manufacturing technologies that are perceptive when utilized in combination through the connecting together and the working off information sources that are common.

In addition, El-Najdawi and Stylianou (1993), find that the aspect of a decision support system (DSS) and an expert system (ES) having various similarities, they result into significant synergies that can be effectively reaped resulting in enhanced quality and effectiveness through the combination of these two systems. Further more, Jih et al. (2005), acknowledges on the ability of effecting electronic commerce efficiently. This results in the development of synergistic results. Zhu, (2004), attests that there exist synergies that enhance each other mutually are present when legacy information technology systems and Internet-based e-commerce capabilities are intricately combined together. This level contains synergies mainly manifest themselves in the form of minimized costs, enhanced quality and improved operating efficiency. The cost savings and other aspects such as enhanced efficiency are realized because of the association or the complementally aspect that is involved in the IT aspects (Clark, T. and Hermens, 2001).

Theoretical Basis and a Tentative Research Model

The intended research endeavors in the answering of the research questions through the implementation of the resource based view in combination with the relational view. The primary reason to this is that the resource-based view contains critical tools that are relevant in the analysis of synergies at the resource level. The adoption of the relational view makes it possible to come up with concise specification of association between the relevant resources.

Research Design

The proposed research attempts to acquire the sought research results through the incorporation of an approach that involves different methods. This approach tends to take into account a mixture of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. In essence, there are up to three particular stages whereby each of the stages is intended to develop varied but yet interrelated results.

The first stage is one regarding the conceptualization process of the synergy of information systems. This process utilizes the information technology construct and interconnects with the second stage whereby the conceptualization of the information system synergy can be developed. The third stage involves the empirical and quantitative analysis and testing of the information system synergy. This is approached on how it acts as a missing link between investment on information technology and the level of performance of the business entity. The first two stages by far follow on the construct production and development advance   as suggested by Churchill (1979).

Permissions:

The main area where permission will have to be sought for is the corporate company. Permission to conduct the survey within the company will involve submission of a copy of the research proposal specifically underpinning the underlying benefits to both the company and the society in general realized from conducting the survey.

Stage one

Step 1: The specification of the field

Step 2: Authentication

Step 3: Purification

Stage Two

Step 1: Pretest

Step 2: Initial pilot test

Step 3: Display of the items

Stage Three

Step 1: Acquisition of data

Step 2: Location of the research

Step 3: Conducting survey

Step 4: The analysis of the collected data

Conclusion

The proposed study looks into the concept on information systems synergy through the development of a concise definition that illustrates the concept connotation and extension, analyzing the background research of information system synergy and empirically analyzing the IS synergy’s impact on the performance of business entities.

Text Aloud Software

Introduction

Currently, technology is evolving at an extremely high speed. New computers with greater speeds are been created while new software are built in with new application everyday. One of the areas that have great improvement due to the technological change is education. In the past, it was extremely difficult for teachers to teach those students who had disabilities in reading. This is because many students are not able to read while others have disabilities. For instance, there are blind students who cannot be able to read. However, technological researchers have introduced new software that enables the students to listen what is written rather than reading the materials. Therefore, an evaluation of the software, how it is applied, costs of the software and the language choices of the software made.

Discussion

Text aloud software is a type of text speech which converts all text documents in the personal computer like Microsoft Word, Emails, Web page and many others into a natural speech of any language depending on the user (Nextup.com 2012). This means that a student can access a book in the internet with the help of the software without even having to read the procedures to be followed to access. This is because the software is reading aloud for the purposes of the student to understand. Additionally, after accessing the book, the software reads aloud while the student is listening (Nextup.com 2012). In this case, there is nowhere the student is expected to read. For this reason, it has made it easy for the student to study leading to increased rate of literacy.

In the past, when the text aloud software was first initiated, voice generation was limited to few applications. For instance, the languages used were limited and the documents to be read were limited. In this case, it was not adequate for the students to read the documents. However, the software has evolved and it has a variety of voice generations (Nextup.com 2012). For example, almost all the European languages are applicable using the software. Secondly, the software is not limited to text speech only. There is software that has come up which have other interactive applications providing the users with more information from what is written in the document (Nextup.com 2012).

Similarly, in the past, the software could only be used with limited appliances. For instance, only certain computers were able to use this software. Recently, there scope applicable with the software has been widened (Nextup.com 2012). People are able to access the software with almost any type of computer they are using. For example, the different files can be listened in a personal computer or creation of audio files for ipods, iphones and other potable devices depending on what the user decides to use (Nextup.com 2012).

Text aloud software is extremely readily available in the market. In the web, there is free trial software that can be used by the customers to check their efficiency. Upon the review of the trial version of the software, a person is expected to buy permanent software depending on the applications of the software. In this case, the costs of acquiring the text aloud software are extremely cheaper.

Conclusion

The improvement of technology today has raised the level of literacy all over the world. The introduction of text aloud software has made it easy for the students to learn easily and quickly. Additionally, the software has been upgraded several times to increase the number of languages it can convert together with other applications. Moreover, the manufacturers have made it flexible for the users since they can now use it with their potable devices. The astonishing fact is that this software is readily available for the and cheap.

“HCBA” The Reflection on Legal System

As I walked into the facility, the history structure presented a lifelong enrichment of service to the legal system. I notice on the walls of the interior a list of lawyers who have come and gone through the bar association. I read about the impressions they left on how future lawyers should ethically govern themselves when practicing in the justice system. This was particularly interesting. I never would have thought in a day of my life that I would be stepping into a place where I thought I know more about, but then again, I was wrong.

I met Mr. John F. Kynes, executive director of the Hillsborough County Bar Association, located at 1610 N. Tampa Street, Tampa, Florida33602. As I interview the Executive Director, he indicated that the Bar Association holds a 3700 membership organization with its membership structure out to form 30 committees (HCBA, 2011). The members range from public practice offices, corporate attorneys, government, student members, paralegals, to all judges. The aim of the organization is to unify the legal professionals under a high standard of ethics and professionalism.

The executive director explained the legal resources used in the association. The first and the most obvious one was the constitution. The constitution is usually the primary resource for all the judges, lawyers and any other person searching for legal resources (HCBA, 2011). He told me that, the constitution contains all the necessary resources to guide them in any issues. All cases in America are tried based on the constitution. He continued to say that, the constitution is the backbone of the legal systems in America. Henceforth, the most important legal resource used by the association is the constitution.

The executive director was quick to add that the constitution is not the only legal resource; the association has other legal resources that it uses to refer whenever needed. He told me that every county has its sets of by laws that are set by the county. I discovered that the next resource were the different by laws set by the county. For instance, in some counties, the age at which minors can be tried in an adult court is fourteen but in Hillsborough, it is sixteen. However, there are cases where minors with murder cases have been tried with as little as twelve years (Susskind, 2008). With this explanation, I was able to understand why HCBA uses the Hillsborough by laws as one of their legal resources.

The other most important legal resources are the precedent cases. In most legal cases, other similar cases can provide information. For instance, in a civil suit where a person has is suing for damages due to defamation, there are similar cases that can be referred. This information is helpful. On the other hand, it offers experiences of what happens in such a situation (Warner, Elias, Elias & Nolo, 2004). The executive director concluded by saying that in the association, professionalism and excellent code of conduct in the legal system has been the key to success.

As I moved on around the offices, I was lucky to interview one of the attorneys who were preparing himself to go to court. He told me that it is one of the greatest opportunities to be at the HCBA. This is because it has offered him the experience and expertise that he requires. On to that note, I asked him the nature of legal services that provides. One of the legal services the attorneys provide is research information to law firms. He gave me an example where he was contracted to provide information on a murder case (Warner, Elias, Elias & Nolo, 2004). In this case, he was expected to maintain and provide the information with utmost professionalism. This is where he searched the information and maintains the client secrecy as expected by the professional code of ethics.

Secondly, he told me that one of the legal services he provides is to represent somebody in a court of law. He explained to me that he represents most of his clients in a court of law against legal proceedings. For example, he practices criminal law where he has specialized in representing people in the different murder cases that they are involved. In this situation, he is expected to offer his legal services to his client without hiding any information to clients. Additionally, he is expected to consult with the client any decision. This means that he is not expected to make decisions on behalf of the client.

Lastly, the attorneys are expected to keep pro bono services. These are legal services made to a client for free. Most of the time, attorneys do not provide services freely. However, the state has created a system where those people who do not have money can provide services freely to those people who do not have money. The attorney told me that they are expected to provide legal services for free to clients who do not have money, as a show of good faith as directed by the state (Susskind, 2008). Recently, he worked on a pro bono case where he represented a client on a murder case and won.

As I was speaking to the attorney, I asked him what effect or impact do the legal services have on society. The first impact is that he changes people’s lives. Many people are accused falsely. Once they go to prison or they are in the system, they are seen as criminals, yet they were innocent. Most of them become murders, robbers or even rapist. This shows that the legal services provided by the attorney can save a person’s life from becoming a hardcore criminal.

Secondly, they attorney legal services have an impact to the society in that they maintain law and order in the society. The attorney gave me a real situation if there were no attorneys. It will be chaotic in the legal system. For instance, people will not be able to represent themselves because they do not know the procedures to follow. Secondly, people will not know what evidence to gather. Additionally, they will be no professionalism in the judicial system. This shows that the judicial system that maintains laws and order will not have the law and order that it maintain in the society (Warner, Elias, Elias & Nolo, 2004). Therefore, the legal services provided by the attorney impact in the legal system in that, they maintain law and order.

The attorney left me and went to court. I walked through the association so that I could try to learn more of what happens. At one desk, I came across a paralegal who busy doing his work. However, he gave me the privilege to interview despite the fact that he was busy. At first, I asked him to define the term paralegal. He told me that paralegals are professionals who act as assistants to the layers. He continued and told me that paralegal do not provide any legal services to the clients neither do they act as the officer of the court. This means that they are expected to offer the lawyers with the necessary help that is required.

Secondly, he told me that lawyers are free to ask advice from the paralegals in any case. Lawyers do not always have all the knowledge about a case. Additionally, the information is too much for them to keep on remembering. Henceforth, they require support from somebody who will help them to look for helpful information. Additionally, they need somebody who can advise in some of the legal decisions they have to make while they are performing their duties. This is where the paralegal fits. He helps the lawyer at all times with the information that he requires. Secondly, he answers questions that might be unclear to the lawyer (Warner, Elias, Elias & Nolo, 2004).

The paralegal continued to tell me that they are behind the success of every lawyer. This is because the law is extremely wide. Therefore, there is no lawyer who can obtain what he or she reads in his or her head. Therefore, the paralegals help the lawyers by providing them with the information that they require in time for their cases. Additionally, they provide them with advice based on their own experiences in work. Lastly they can correct the lawyers if they are about to make mistakes in their cases. These legal services may seem not to have any impact, but in the real sense, they do.

I decided to let the paralegal continue with his work. I had started to gain an overview of the different legal systems and the impact law has on the society. For example, law plays a significant role to the society. People may assume this, but the impact is great. It maintains law and order in the society. This is because, if people were allowed to do as they pleased, there would be no order. Everything will turn and become chaotic. The levels of crime will automatically increase. In this case, law has stepped in and made sure that everybody is at peace.

Secondly, law offers people with not only peace but also justice. In many situations, the people who perform criminal activities, they injure those people who cannot help themselves. In this people do not have anybody or person to help. Law has taken this role and stepped in to defend those people who cannot help themselves (Susskind, 2008). For this reason, I tend to think that law has a great impact on the lives of people because it has provided justice to all the people. Additionally, it has helped those people are defenseless.

Additionally, law has a great impact on the security of people. If there were no laws, people would not be safe. A person can mug or even kill anytime. Additionally, it is the law that has ensured that people do not deviate from their duties. For instance, employers will not be harassing the employees. Additionally, parents will be giving birth to children and living them to help themselves (Warner, Elias, Elias & Nolo, 2004). This shows that people will no longer be safe again. Henceforth, law ensures that people are safe and secure in their places of work and in the society. For this fact, I think that law influences the lives of people by providing security.

On the other hand, law has great impacts on the people personally. According to what I have learnt, I have noticed that law has a great impact in my life. At first, it creates peace in my mind. This is because I have come to understand that it is law that makes me walk in the street safe and sound without being attacked. Additionally, it is law that allows me to live in an environment where I can do whatever I wanted to do as long is it is the legal. Therefore, I can say that law has an impact in my life because I have peace in my mind.

Secondly, law has molded my character to become a better person that what I could have turned out if it were not for law. For instance, it was because of law that my parent taught me that stealing is wrong. Additionally, based on what I have learnt from HCBA, parents are afraid to see their children ending up in prison. This is because parents are bringing their child to the association so that they can be taught by the association the different laws (Warner, Elias, Elias & Nolo, 2004). Therefore, this I believe that it is law that has made me to the person that I am today otherwise of there was no law I would have become a murder.

However, I think there are some legal changes that should be made in the system so that it can be better. At first, the government should ensure that the pro bono cases are taken with seriousness. This is because, most of the law firms often give this pro bono case to those lawyers who are not experienced or those lawyers that have newly joined the firm. In this case, the lawyer is not likely to represent the pro bono case better same as it would have been done by a more experienced person.

Secondly, I think the legal system should enhance the speed in the provision of justice. Despite the fact, people should be given enough time so that they can be able to prepare themselves; the legal systems should implement a method where they ensure that justice provided to the people is first. This is because many people die even before justice has been done to them. On the other hand, the criminals have the time to take change or distort the crime scene. This means that justice will be not denied. Henceforth, the government should implement and make sure that the legal system is fast to ensure timely justice.

PSU Education Gap Essay

Penn State University has always been my University of choice since I joined my high school.  The university has been my role model and my motivation to work hard towards attainment of my dreams. Since I finished my high school at Hong Kong, three years have already elapsed.   Even though, this has been considerably long time, I have spent my time well and to my best of knowledge, I am satisfied that the period has provided me an opportunity to learn new experiences in life. My passion to advance in economics began when I was at high school. I loved reading magazines and books in economics and admired prominent personalities that had studied economics at the Penn State Univesrity.

In the three years, since my completion of my high school education, I have engaged in different activities geared at enhancing my skills and knowledge. Financial constraints played a role in my delay to join the university as the amount of fees required was out of my reach. My family background was poor and therefore, I could not join a university immediately despite being the best performer in my school. Therefore, these problems contributed to my delay in seeking a place at the university.

Even though there was insufficient funds for me to join a university direct, I did not give up with my quest to seek education that would help me reach or achieve my dreams of becoming an entrepreneur.  I resolved to solicit funds from my friends and pledged with my parents to assist me with the little savings they had so that I could join a middle level college. Fortunately, my initiative and pledges bore fruits when I managed to get funds for my college. I opted to join Dean College, Franklin, MA for a short course as an international student.  The course lasted for 2 year before we graduated.  On my graduation, I could not believe that despite the difficulties and obstacles I went through I was being conferred a certificate that could help me earn a living and assist my parents and the society at large. I owe my sincere gratitude and thanks to all those people who came in my way to aid me with my school fees. My desire to enroll for a degree became evident when I was in the college. I have worked hard and I can see, my dream is coming true.

During my studies, I was an active member of various clubs. Apart from my academics, I took part in volunteer programmes at Young Vision organization in Hong Kong.  I used to assist people and communities in community work during our holidays. I loved assisting people and I was happy to get a volunteer organization that I joined and through it contributed in giving back to the society by offering my services. Back at the college, because of my passion in charity work, I was elected to be a team captain of the charity club. The club activities were to engage in charity works at school. As a team leader, I provided good leadership which saw many students change their attitude towards volunteerism and charity. The number of students joining the club increased at a tremendous rate making the club one of the most vibrant and active in the school.  Due to this popularity, during my time as a team leader, we were awarded an award by the principal as the best club that was organized and active.

I also participated in the basketball games at the college. As the captain of the team, I managed to take my tennis team to the finals in the all college games that are played every year. Our team managed to scoop the awards after beating all teams in our groups at the final.  I can say with confidence, that these leadership opportunities at the college have widened my scoop of thinking part from improving my social skills. I have learned to work as a team and I have sharpened my leadership skills and even improved on my interacting skills as I always interacted with my fellow students from all walks of life.

I have also worked for Hong Kong International Airport as a luggage servicer in the last one year.  I secured this opportunity after my graduation at the Dean College. The opportunity helped me in nurturing and improving my skills and knowledge. Furthermore, this opportunity also allowed me to face real work or life challenges. I have been able to execute my duties as per the requirements of the management and even surpassing their expectation. On several occasions, I have been given accolades on many occasions for being a good time manager and exhibiting good organizational skills.  Furthermore, I was recognized by the school as one of the creative and innovative student when I suggested the implementation of a program that would improve the existing education system. The system was geared at enhancing the teacher –student relationships through meetings and forums where students would raise their views and pinions freely.

I am therefore, esteemed that the three years I have out since my high school has enabled me to realize my dream and shape my career. The challenges I faced have enabled me reach the far I have and I do not regret for the three years that I have been out. I believe the challenges I have gone through have redefined and shaped me to acquire the level of education I have always yearned to acquire. I believe that education is the pillar of a better future; education liberates people and brings light in their life. My university of choice has always been Penn state university. I believe that my dreams will come true at this university. The university has produced role models that have changed the lives of many and this is what I am looking forward to.
