1-Religion In China (Islam In China) 2- Authoritarian Rule and Rapid economic Development

I need two completely different research paper proposals (5 sources each) :
My Instructions for the first proposal:

1-Concrete information in terms of CCP involvement and relationship of the government to religion in China. Just what I have so far in terms of notes is an outline of what my essay would look like:

-Introduction:

– Where Islam is prevalent- all over China in small numbers but mostly in the Xianjing province.

– How Islam was brought to China (very brief history). You don’t have to give details in your proposal, just mention that you will include a historical context.

– historically how Islam (specifically) and religion (generally) has been treated by different Chinese governments. So how religion/Islam were under early Chinese imperial rulers, under early CCP (Mao, under Deng Xioping). Religion has always been a controversial topic in China and Islam specifically has never been supported or encouraged by the government.

– Xianjing and history: the strong presence of Islam in Xianjing, links to terrorist groups like Al Qaeda, ethnic differences and the impact of these ethnic/religious differences on China’s unity.

– how the CCP currently deals with unrest in Xianjing

-how the CCP currently deals with Islam in China generally

-future and prospects for Islamic integration into mainstream Chinese society
—————————————————————–
2- My Instructions for the second proposal:

1. How important is authoritarian rule (as seen in the Chinese Communist Party) for rapid economic development? (THEISIS)

Basically, here you would refute the concept of capitalism being linked to democracy. You would say (as your prof did) that capitalism is not linked to democracy at all. And then you would present a counter argument asking if in fact, capitalism is bad for democracy? Does capitalism undermine economic growth? Is it better to have authoritarian rule without democracy to achieve faster economic growth?

2. Does democracy undermine economic recovery? Ex: the US economic recovery process has been stalled several times due to democratic opposition and partisan politics. Since China didn’t need to deal with all this, and could do whatever it wanted without much public opposition, maybe democracy does undermine economic growth?

This is basically an example of point 1. It is saying that, look, here is an example of how democracy was bad for the economy (US) and how no democracy was good (China).

3. At the same time, the CCP follows a system of inner party democracy, with various factions within the CCP acting as opposition to each other. Does this function as an effective opposition? And does this aid or undermine economic growth?

This point is just a counter-point to the argument that China is a completely non-democratic state. It has opposition within the CCP and maybe that functions like a democracy? In that case, democracy possibly has no connection with economic growth and it is just the capabilities of the ruling government. It is an issue to explore in your paper, and you would take a position (for or against) on this point.

4. Also the example of Russia, which introduced capitalist reforms with a socialist political system but it did not work

Point number 4 is just an example to put into effect your argument. Russia is a good counter-example to China if you argue that authoritarian regimes work best for effecting capitalism and economic growth.

So the point of this paper would not be to talk about democracy coming to China as a result of economic growth. It would be to discuss if democracy is good or bad for capitalist economic growth. We all know that capitalism can exist without democracy, so you don’t have to talk about if/when democracy comes to China (the what ifs). You have to talk about if capitalism without democracy is better or worse than capitalism with democracy.

You did such a good job working for the airport, one of the pilots has asked you to build an application that will help him navigate between the routes he constantly flies. You realize that a linear data structure isn’t appropriate for this application so you turn to the tree and graph. Evaluate the following potential routes and choose either a tree or a graph structure. This pilot flies the following routes:

•Airport A to Airport B
•Airport B to Airport C
•Sometime Airport C to Airport D
•Other times Airport C to Airport E
What is the best data structure for mapping these routes and why? Justify your decision.

How would your data structure choice change if the routes where expanded to:

•Airport A to Airport B
•Airport B to Airport C
•Sometimes Airport C to Airport D to Airport F or Airport G then back to Airport A
•Other times Airport C to Airport E to Airport B to Airport A
Further, there are three different flight paths from Airport B to Airport C.

Worth: 35%

(Late papers will be docked 2 marks per day)

Double space. Single side only, please.

Include a cover page with a title, your name and student number.

This assignment has 3 parts. Include all Parts, in the following order.

Part 1: 10% (Your grade will be based on the inclusion of  1a), 1b) and 1c)

1a) Interview Outline or guide to use in your interview:

In preparation for your interview, identify a list of topics (with subtopics) you would like to address with your ‘narrator’/interviewee. Topics will be based on your research for your Contextual Background in Assignment #1 and as discussed in class. Include your own questions as well as those in the handout “Oral History Interview Questions.

Expectation:

  • 1a) Hand in your questions (1 page)

1b) Conduct the Interview: (one to two hours long):

Expectation: (No grade assigned. 2 marks deleted if not handed in)

  • 1b) Hand in a copy of the first 4 pages of your notes (these can be single spaced if typed, or photocopied if hand-written)
  • 1b) Hand in the consent form.

1c) Develop an outline of issues and ideas that you plan on discussing in your Oral History Report (1 page).  You will probably take notes and/or record a wealth of information. Identify 3-key issues or themes of interest that you will discuss in your report.  Include 1-2 sentences explaining why they are of interest to your topic.

Expectation:

  • 1c) Hand in the outline (1 page)

Part 2:

2) Oral History Report (in formal essay format) (20%) (5 pages)

Write an analytical report of your interview, integrating aspects of the narrator’s story (the micro level) with what you know about the social, political, economic and historical context of her experiences (at the macro level). Remember that a ‘life history’ or ‘personal narrative’ is limited to one person’s perspective. Her story is a fragment of a larger, collective story. Your analysis should include a balance of the details of her story situated within the larger context.

You are expected to incorporate and draw upon your research that you prepared in Assignment #1.

Citations and references are expected. Include a Bibliography at the end of references used.

Expectation:

  • Include an introduction describing the person and the theme/topic of the oral history.
  • Choose three key themes or issues that the narrator highlighted in her interview. Analyze and compare her experiences (the micro level) to the larger social, political, and economic context (macro level). (Note: You should draw from the research conducted about the topic in Assignment #1) Conduct further research if needed.
  • Write a conclusion including your interpretation of her story in relation to the larger social context. (For example: Is it similar/dissimilar? Why or why not.)
  • Be sure to include issues related to your narrator’s gender, race, culture, social status, education level, etc.

Part 3

3) Self-Reflections: (5%) (1-2 pages)

Reflect on aspects of your own ‘subject position’ in the interview process and your learning process overall.  Go beyond mere description: think of connections.

Expectation:

  • Discuss how your own personal characteristics (race, gender, age, level of education) and your relationship to the narrator/interviewee may have influenced your approach to the interview and the content of your analysis.
  • Note your own interests, personal reactions and editing process that may have affected your interpretation of the narrator’s story.
  • Describe your learning experience in relation to the interview process and analysis or interpretation of the narrator’s story.

Religion In China (Islam In China)

Professor’s Instructions:
Research Paper Guidelines (Poli 335)

All students will be required to submit one short research paper (10-12 pages of text, double-spaced, plus bibliography) about contemporary (post-1978) Chinese DOMESTIC Politics, including possibly social, economic and cultural issues relevant to political life. NO international relations topics are accepted.

FOR 10% OF THE COURSE GRADE: Please submit by the moodle site assignment function on Monday 7 November 2011 a 250-word, double-spaced proposal (.pdf file only) in the form of an abstract summarizing what the finished research piece would look like. In addition, depending on the topic researched, reputable ‘open source’ material may be used to complement your academic sources. I mean official websites of governments, international organizations, university research centers and well-established news organizations. Please consult the instructor before using any other kind of ‘open source.’

You are also most welcome to come to my office, H-1225-30 (see hours in top block of the moodle site), to discuss ideas about the research paper or to submit initial ideas to me by e-mail.

Please NAME your .pdf file: FamilyName_proposal.pdf

All typed texts must be written in Arial 11 or a simple font of the same size. Please, save the trees: NO COVER PAGE, but just two lines, left-justified, at the top of the first page with "Politics 335, [name of assignment, due date]" on first line and your name and student ID on the second line. The title of your paper, centered, plus the body of the text should follow after skipping only two lines. Your pages must be numbered.

You must show knowledge of any of the required readings that touch upon your topic. You must NOT cite class lectures or lecture notes as references.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING SECTION:
FAILURE TO RESPECT THESE REQUIREMENTS WILL RESULT IN FAILURE IN THIS COURSE AS WELL AS A CODE OF CONDUCT HEARING.

Students are required to submit their own work. Paraphrasing or copying texts without giving a clear identification of the source constitutes plagiarism, an academic offence which is automatically reported to the Dean’s Office. (Each term, on average, I send two student research papers to the Code of Conduct Administrator.)

All borrowings as is from sources must be identified with quotation marks.

Close paraphrasing (copying with slight rearrangement of clauses and a few word substitutions) will be considered as plagiarism, EVEN IF a source is given.

Submitting your own work also means limiting the use of direct quotes to statements that are quote-worthy, i.e., presenting briefly a distinctive point of view from an actor in the events or from an unusually perceptive commentator. The frequent use of long quotes from sources as a substitute to writing your own analysis will be severely penalized.

All references for sources or for direct quotes must include the page number (unless the source article has only one page) and that includes articles found on-line.

If a student can find a text on the Internet, so can the instructor.

AND I DO GOOGLE ALL WORK (including notes for Oral Presentations).

I require use of the "Chicago Style" Author-Date format with embedded notes.

See the Guide to Citing and Acknowledging (Poli-207) linked below in this block.

Finally, on-line (or CD-based) encyclopedias (e.g., Wikipedia, MS Encarta and Answers.com) must NOT be used, though specialized databases, such as CIA World Factbook and various international organization sites, are authorized.

See rather Concordia e-journals, such as:
- China Quarterly
- China Journal
- International Security
- Journal of Contemporary China
- Pacific Affairs

Grade: 78.00 / 100.00

Topic is generally good, but you need a thesis statement that is not purely descriptive that offers an explanatory framework for understanding why Uyghurs have less religious freedom than other Chinese Muslims.

Bibliography is good on books, but don’t forget the required readings touching on your subject: Hansen 2002, “Ethnic Conflict and Accommodation in China,” 149-163; AND Joseph 2010, 315-354. Plus add some more specialist academic journal articles focusing on the situation in Xinjiang.
Citation style is Chicago Author-Date, namely:
Author. Publication-Year. Title. Publication-City: Publisher.
