Writing Guidelines and Suggestions

PUP 200 – Cities in Cinema

Dr. Joochul Kim

Basics

Include your name, date, and class title (or professor) at the top of the paper

-Black Ink

-Printed on blank computer paper

-Include page numbers

Staple, no paper clip

-Times New Roman font size 12 is generally standard.

-Double space

-Paragraphs should be indented

-Do not mess with the standard word processing margins already on the computer

Common grammar errors

-Formal papers do not use contractions (he’s, it’s, can’t, weren’t, etc.). Spell it out

-Make sure subject and verb agree.

-Keep tenses consistent. Do not flip flop between present and past tense at all.  If you begin in the present tense stay in the present tense the entire paper.

-Paragraph lengths should be about 3-7 sentences. A paragraph should never be more than ½ a page.

-A new paragraph should be started every time you begin a new idea or introduce a new theme.  If you are in doubt it is better to start a new paragraph.

-Sentence fragments are incomplete sentences. One of the easiest ways to connect them is to replace the period with a comma or just delete the period to connect the sentences. For example, “I need to find a new roommate. Because the one I have is not nice” should be written as “I need to find a new roommate because the one I have is not nice, for example.

Style Issues

-Avoid repetition of words or thoughts. If you have said something clearly, the reader will understand your point the first time. Also, do not use the same adjectives or verbs over and over. It is not only boring but makes the writer sound like they have no vocabulary.

-Use words with teeth. In other words, try to find the most descriptive adjectives and colorful verbs that you can. Did the man go to the store or did he sprint to the store? Was the author good or was the author eloquent?

-Overgeneralizations are really just unsupported statements. “Tijuana is all a filthy slum” is not necessarily true unless you back it up by proving that there are absolutely no nice places there. A better statement would be “The majority of Tijuana appears to be mostly filthy slum.”

-If you quote or summarize someone else’s work, cite. This includes any information found on the internet. It does not matter much which citation format you use (MLA, APA, Chicago, ASA, etc.), just as long as you cite.

# 1 biggest complaint from TAs

-FORMALITY. Do not write your paper like you are talking to a friend. Use of slang, jargon, and other informal language is inappropriate when writing academic papers. Write clearly, descriptively, and avoid using clichés. Try not to write in first person or introduce yourself into the paper (best done by avoiding using “I”)

If you are in doubt about something or need help

-Some students may not be proficient in English or the language…If this is the case be sure to have native English speakers read over your papers or take your paper to the writing center to go over it with them.  If you have specific questions feel free to contact one of the TA’s by e-mail.

Unit 2 IP – Biological Influences

You have just been asked to teach the concept of adaptation to a psychology class. You decide to conduct the following experiments to teach the concept of adaptation.

Task 1: Conduct three of the following experiments. Record your reactions, and be specific for each experiment.

Experiment 1:

Rub your index fingers gently over a piece of very coarse sandpaper a few times and rate its coarseness on a scale from 1 (very soft) to 7 (very coarse).
After a minute or two, rub the same finger over the paper and again rate its coarseness. Did your perception of the coarseness change? How? Record your reaction.

Experiment 2:

Prepare one cup with sugar water and one with fresh water.
Take a sip of the sugar water and swish it around in your mouth for several seconds without swallowing it. Gradually, it should taste less sweet. (Dispose of the sugar water)
Taste from the cup containing fresh water. Did the taste of the fresh water surprise you? How? Record your reaction.

Experiment 3:

Take about 15 index cards and a flashlight that is opaque on all sides (so that light shines only through the front) into a very dark room.
Place all 15 cards over the beam of light.
Slowly remove the cards one at a time until you can barely detect the light, and then count the number of cards that remain over the light.
After a few minutes, the light should begin to look brighter. When this is the case, add cards and see if you can still see the light.
Repeat this process of gradually adding cards over a 15-minute period. Were you able to detect an increasingly dim light the longer you spent in the dark? Record your reaction.
How many cards did it take to not see the light after time?

Experiment 4:

Fill 3 medium-sized bowls as follows:
Bowl 1 – with very hot (but not painfully hot) tap water
Bowl 2 – with very cold tap water
Bowl 3 – with a mixture of the very hot and very cold water.
Arrange them, so your right hand is in front of the cold water, your left hand is in front of the hot water, and the lukewarm water is in the middle.
Submerse your hands into the water (right into cold, left into hot) for about 3 minutes
After 3 minutes, quickly transfer both hands to the lukewarm (middle) bowl. What did you sense? Record your reaction.

In all four experiments, you will experience adaption.

Task 2: Write a paper that describes adaption and how you experienced it in your experiments. The paper should cover the following.

Fully describe the process and results of the experiments that you chose.
What is sensory adaptation? Explain the concept of sensory adaptation. Refer to your text for the definition of sensory adaptation (this is not the general dictionary definition)
Explain how adaptation is evident in each of your experimental results.
Provide a comprehensive description of the sensory systems that are involved in the experiments that you performed. This description should include what happens from the receptors to the brain. Your discussion should illustrate what was experienced in each experiment.
Discuss how adaptation is important from an evolutionary perspective.

Be sure to document your references using APA format.

Rachael and Kate

Rachel and Kate had been good friends since high school in 1969, when they were co-valedictorians of their graduating class. After high school, Kate left town to attend college and Rachel joined the navy; they kept in touch during the 1970s and 1980s. While Kate married, completed law school, and began her law practice, Rachel traveled in Burma, Laos, and Vietnam, buying antiquities and art objects and somehow getting these “culturally sensitive” items out of their respective countries of origin. She winced when people used the term “smuggler” to characterize what she did for a living. In her law practice, Kate often represented property developers, business owners, and licensed professionals in their dealings with government agencies, neighborhood associations, and professional licensing boards.
Rachel left the Southeast Asia antiquities market in the mid-1980s and later got a van and spent the next eight years traveling through Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, collecting antiquities and earning a living painting murals for businesses and getting occasional work restoring art for museums and art dealers.

While Rachel was adventuring in Latin America, Kate was building her solo law practice to the point where it allowed her to make a reasonable amount of money and still leave town for a week or two at a time to travel with her husband. Rachel returned to the U.S., married, and filled both outbuildings on her property with stuff that she had accumulated over the years, some of it very valuable, some of it junk. For Rachel, who worked “off the books” most of her life, her possessions were her life’s savings, her Social Security, she joked that her estimated Social Security retirement earnings would be about $25 a month, the U.S. Navy being the only employer contributing to her account. Kate, on the other hand, paid taxes and had investments and property to sustain her in her retirement.

One evening, Rachel and Kate talked about where their lives had taken them since their high school valedictorian times, and how they had used their intellectual gifts to establish their respective ecological niches in society. They agreed that what we call “intelligence” can manifest itself in a variety of behaviors and lifestyles. Kate considered herself “book smart”; Rachel, on the other hand, considered herself “street smart.” Despite these differences, both women felt that they had done pretty well in life. Psychologist Robert Sternberg has proposed a theory of intelligence that takes this diversity of thinking styles into account. Please visit the Web sites below and write a 2 page explanation of how Sternberg’s theory of intelligence would apply to Rachel and Kate.

A) In many ways, television has proved to be one of the worst inventions of modern times. All too often, television is harmful because of the shows it broadcasts and the way it is used in the home. Assigned articles: a. Fischer, Deborah. “Dying to Entertain: Violence on Prime Time and Broadcast Television.” b. Freedman, Jonathan. “No Real Evidence for TV Violence Causing Real Violence.”

In this essay, you will choose and argue for or against a position on a given topic. What is important is that you:
• Have a clear & sound position that is supported by logical evidence,
• Appropriately acknowledge any opposition,
• Use tactful language,
• Give enough background information for any audience to understand the situation and your position, and
• Conclude your essay with a “clinching” summary and/or final persuasive point.
• Use the assigned articles and your own experience to support your position.

Draft:

Constructing a solid argumentation essay is often one of the more difficult writing tasks for students. To get through the process more smoothly, this project also includes a draft that will be submitted to the Discussion Board. Look for the “Argumentation Essay” topic on the Discussion Board for further instructions on these components.

Goals & Tips:

The goal of this essay is to construct an argument and build logical support for that argument. Just as with the recent exams, it’s important that you consistently acknowledge where you’re using your source and where the thoughts and examples are all yours. Lack of or improper acknowledgement of sources is plagiarism, and will result in a 0/100 for the assignment.

Choose ONE of the following statements to argue for or against.

Your main idea/thesis for this essay is your position one of the following topics. You do not have to agree with the statement made about the topics here. These are provided only to raise issues. You can and should argue whatever position you truly hold. You must select your topic from the list below. Essays that are written on other topics will not be eligible for points.

Tip: Position statements and key parts of the prompt are underlined or bolded.

Globalization

Globalization and modernization refer to the influence that modern nations have on nondeveloped or traditional nations and societies. At times, these influences result from direct contact, such as the opening of a Western corporate office or manufacturing plant in an underdeveloped nation. Other times, the influences can be indirect, such as the transmission of Western cultural values to non-Western societies through mediums such as television, literature, and goods shipped to local areas. Globalization and modernization can have both positive and negative impacts on the cultural practices of non-Western societies, and deciphering the impact of these influences can involve a complex analysis.
A. Identify at least two separate examples of native non-Western cultures that have been impacted by globalization.
1. Describe in detail what the circumstances were within each of these cultures both prior to the transformative event and after it.

B. Analyze one of the examples from part A. Be sure to discuss the following questions:
1. What caused the influence? (For example, perhaps it resulted from the U.S. government making a conscious effort to improve the agricultural technology of a particular country.)
2. Was it direct or indirect, intentional or unintentional, and positive or negative? (Remember that the ramifications and outcomes of influences are rarely simple. They impact different aspects of culture differently.)
3. What was the native, non-Western society’s response to the influence?
