Critique of designs and sampling in research

Throughout this course you will apply the unit learning to the critique of two studies in a step-by-step manner. The studies are reported in these articles:
Foster-Fitzpatrick, L., Ortiz, A., Sibilano, H., Marcantonio, R., & Braun, L. T. (1999). The effects of crossed leg on blood pressure measurement. Nursing Research 48(2), 105-108.
Palese, A., Skrap, M., Fachin, M., Visioli, S., & Zannini, L. (2008). The experience of patients undergoing awake craniotomy. Cancer Nursing 31(2), 166–172.

You will submit a critique of the design and sampling methodologies used in these studies. Remember that one is a qualitative study, and the other is a quantitative study, so different criteria apply. In your textbook on pages 112–114 there is a guide to the critique of a quantitative study, and on pages 115–117 is a similar guide to the critique of a qualitative study. (Also note that in each chapter there are dialog boxes related to specific critique questions for that specific section of the study). Be sure to identify the design and sampling methodologies used. Also include how the ethical considerations and how the nurse researcher protected the participants in the study? See the dialog box 7.3 on page 170 for critiquing the ethical aspects of the study.

In your conclusion, summarize your overall review of these sections of the study. How well did the researchers follow the research process guidelines? Did you find anything unusual? How does it impact the overall research study if any of the elements are missing?

Communication

This analysis may require The textbook “Among Cultures. The Challenges of Communication,” 2nd ed. by Bradford J. Hall, 2005 Wadsworth Cengage Learning.

Here were my professors instructions:
Assignment:

View a full length feature/indie film or documentary pertaining to a culture you have interest in but know little about. There are some suggestions for film choices and trailers in Module 7, but you are not limited to that list. Films can be viewed via the Internet, Netflex, Pay per view, in a movie theater, etc.

Watch the film with a friend (preferably from another culture), or family member, or your group members (together or separately), if you chose that option, and have a conversation about it afterwards. For the paper, write about the more interesting aspects of your shared observations and insights about the film and the culture being depicted. What did you learn about this culture from viewing the film that you didn’t know before?

Incorporate 3-5 class concepts/terminology from a variety of course material found in ch’s 4, 5 (optional) in the text, module 3, student discussion posts that are represented in the film in a way that demonstrates your understanding of course material.

Papers are to be 14 size font in Word, 2-3 pages single-spaced (longer if in a group) not including the title page. Put page breaks between pgs. and number them. Use direct quotes or paraphrases from text/mod’s/posts, rather than a single word (i.e. “communication”) that show a connection between what we’re studying and the events/characters/highlights, etc. of the film.

Put these course concepts in bold print and include the author and page #, e.g. (Hall, 24) or mod. #, e.g. (Josselyn, Mod. 3), or some other source from mod’s. directly after the citation in the body of the paper, with a bibliography as well (see below).

A bibliography is required for all class papers to provide complete information about the sources (Hall and Josselyn) you cited within the paper. Use appropriate bibliographic citations (either APA or MLA style sheets) when citing sources including our text & modules. You can use the bibliography in module 8 as a model.

Business Studies

have now reviewed the structure of the Mini Cases that I would like you to follow when you write a case. These are attached as ‘Guidelines for Writing Mini Cases’. To reiterate, you need to ensure that each mini case includes the following:@
1) An introductory paragraph, summarizing what you are going to say.

2) The next paragraph must start with the following sentence: “After analyzing this (case/person/group), I have concluded that the main (problem(s) or opportunity(s)) for (the person or group in the case) are the following:”

3) “To address these problems/take advantage of these opportunities, I suggest that (the person or group) …”

4) “These recommendations are based on specific concepts that we have discussed in class or obtained from our book. First, in (chapter X/topic X/discussion X) I saw that (name specific concept here)…, which supports my recommendation of (refer to recommendation in number 2 above) … (applies or happened) because…

5) A concluding paragraph, summarizing the points you have made.

Final Reflective Essay

Try to think of this papers as an expanded philosophy of education. The big question I want you to consider by the article that I will upload. Also, you will address my own place in the educational spectrum; what have I experienced, what do I value, how do I conceptualize the notions of teaching, learning and knowledge. And how that challenges me to act in my educational practice and philosophy. How I think about school and society been impacted? Intercultural

Intercultural Event Papers – 40 points each – each paper should be about 2 pages, double-spaced

You need to attend 2 intercultural events during the semester and then write two intercultural event papers.

What is an intercultural event? An event that focuses on a co-culture within the United States or culture from outside of the United States

In each paper, you should describe the intercultural event you attended and clearly identify and describe 2 of your reactions; identify an intercultural concept, use a quotation from the textbook/readings to define the concept; explain the concept in your own words; and apply that concept to a specific aspect of the event you attended. (For instance, let’s say the event didn’t start on time and no one was concerned. This could be an example of a culture’s time orientation or use of chronemics – pages 287-288 in the textbook) You need to cite the textbook with an in-text citation and a bibliographical reference.

A “40-point” paper
1. describes the event succinctly – briefly and concisely in a paragraph
2. clearly identifies and describes two personal reactions (I shouldn’t have to
hunt for the two reactions.)
3. identifies, defines, and explains an intercultural concept – the average college
person should be able to understand the concept after reading this part (You should quote the definition/explanation of the concept from the textbook/reading and then you should put the definition/explanation in your own words.)
4. applies the concept to the event appropriately and knowledgeably
5. includes an appropriate source citation using MLA style
6. includes an appropriate name citation, page numbering (done with the “header
and footer” under “view” in Microsoft Word), and a title
7. contains only 1 spelling/grammatical error (I will subtract 1 point for every 2
errors.)
