Christianity in the Vietnam War

EXAM RELIGION 337 GROUND RULES:

1. Answer one question from section A and one from section B.
2. Each answer should be no longer than three pages per question.
3. Answers should be typed, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins, no larger than 12 point font, and grammatically correct.
4. Essays should have a logical structure developing your points. Be sure you have a beginning, middle, and a conclusion. Explain what you say and define terms.
5. Place all direct quotes in quotation marks and give the author and page number in parentheses after the quote, for example (McMahon 20). If you quote from any source in addition to the textbooks, be sure to include that source citation in your essay. Don’t just string quotes or terms together, but explain them in your own words to show that you have thought about them.
6. Although you may use external material, the purpose of the exam is for you to show your own knowledge; therefore, responses should be your work alone.

Section A

1. Chapter 6 in the McMahon book details the crucial issues related to the decision to increase of US military forces in Vietnam during the Johnson administration. Using documents 1, 3-6 and the Logevall essay, give three reasons used to explain this decision. Discuss the meaning and significance of these reasons, why they were deemed significant at the time, and the basis for the arguments used to support these reasons. Use at least one quote from either the documents or essays for each of your three reasons and explain the quote’s significance. Do you think that the rationales given for the reasons are valid? Why, why not?

Section B

2. Two of the central issues that Caputo examines in his book are killing and the enemy. His first major thoughts on these themes occur in chap 7 during his first real fire fight with the VC. Discuss his view of killing in terms of its justification, its naturalness and the need for moral reflection. Briefly describe the images of the enemy from the class presentation on the war posters. Discuss Caputo’s attitude about who the enemy is and who he wishes them to be. Why does this matter to him? How does he later come to view the enemy in chap 16, and what meaning does he draw from this view? In your answer, use two quotes from Caputo and explain each quote’s significance for your analysis. Do his conclusions about the enemy make any sense in terms of your own ethical analysis of war? Why, why not?

Assignment 1

In this assignment you are requested to complete the four tasks:

Task 1: Error Detection (4 marks)

Review the handout or other tutorials about Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC), which is used for error detection during data communication. Answer the following questions:

1. A bit steam or message, M = 10011101, is transmitted from a sender to receiver using the CRC method described in the class. The pattern (or generator) is P =1001. Calculate the CRC (or FCS) for the sender. You must give the details of this calculation.

2. Suppose that the data transmission is successful without any error. Perform calculation using the CRC at the receiver to show it.

3. Suppose that the third bit from the left of the message is inverted during the transmission. It means an error occurs. Show how to use the CRC to detect the error at the receiver.

Task 2: Flow Control (4 marks)

Using the Internet service or books about computer networks, study the “Sliding Window Flow Control”, which is used in TCP protocol. Then, answer the following questions:

1. Describe how this mechanism works in your words.

2. Why is “Sliding Window” scheme more efficient than “Stop and Wait” scheme for flow control?

3. What problem in a network causes TCP to reduce its window size temporarily?

(The answer should be less than 3 pages, including diagrams)

Task 3: WiMAX and Wi-Fi (4 marks)

WiMAX is a new wireless network technology based on the IEEE 802.16 standard. Using the Internet service or books about wireless networks, study this technology. Then, answer the following questions:

1. Why the WiMAX network technology is needed?

2. Briefly discuss the difference between Wi-Fi and WiMAX networks in Medium Access Control (MAC ) layer. In other words, you need to briefly explain how each network achieves frames or packets delivery between two nodes.

3. Give at least three examples of applications of WiMAX networks.

(The answer should be less than 3 pages, including diagrams)

Task 4: LANs Technology (3 marks)

Consider the following diagram containing a number of LANs interconnected by routers.

Answer the questions:

1. How many collision domains are shown in the diagram? Describe the location of each one, and justify your reasons for identifying each one as a collision domain.

2. How many broadcast domains are shown in the diagram? Describe the location of each one, and justify your reasons for identifying each one as a broadcast domain.

3. For Switch 0, assume that it knows the link addresses for all stations on LAN 1. Using the labels shown in the diagram as a substitute for real link addresses, write out Switch 0’s switching table, as far as you can determine. Allocate your own port numbers for each port on the switch.

Relationship with Brazil

Please respond this question with a short answer no more tha a page.
South America is an emerging region of the world (funny to use the term emerging since it has always been there). The region is both rich in resources and rich in challenges.

If you were advising the POTUS, how would you advise him to approach the relationship with Brazil (one of the emerging economies along with Russia, India, and China).

Different types of learners, professionalism and confidentiality

Your supervising teacher has assigned you to work with 3rd graders Shonda, Jeffrey, Juan and Cho. These students are below grade level in reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development and writing. Cho has a very short attention span and Juan has trouble working with his peers. While Shonda has a good grasp of phonemic awareness, this is something that Jeffrey still struggles with. They all lack confidence as readers.

Consider the course topics listed below and select 3 of them to discuss for application to this situation in developmentally appropriate ways. Each topic should be approximately one typed page (for a total of 3 typed pages for this part of the final).

Learning to Read: Phonemic Awareness
Learning To Write
Oral Language Development; Listening & Speaking
Reading to Learn: Comprehension
Reading Fluency
Vocabulary Development
Comprehension The Reading /Writing Connection

Part 2:

Considering what you have learned about the importance of professionalism and confidentiality, how would you handle a situation where parents of your own children’s friends are discussing some of the students you work with. What can you recall from your readings that substantiates your response? Your response should be approximately one typed page.

Your response should be written in complete sentences, organized into paragraphs and be approximately 4-6 typed double-spaced pages (at least 3 pages for part 1 and 1 page for part 2). Be sure to adhere to APA manuscript style (refer to the Kaplan Writing Center for help). Be sure to include:

A title page
The paper itself (the “discussion”)
A references page

The book I use is called Reading Strategies that Work, by Laura Robb. I don’t have an electronic copy of it though.

Business

Business Law and Social Responsibility

Research/Writing Assignment

Overview:

In the book The Responsibility Revolution, the authors, Jeffrey Hollender and Bill Breen, reveal what Seventh Generation and other organizations have done to become more financially, socially, and environmentally sustainable. They say more innovative ideas are needed if we hope to transform the world into a better place. The purpose of the assignment is to develop students’ knowledge of corporate social responsibility concepts and to guide them in cultivating the creative solutions for the next generation of “green” companies.

The Assignment:

 Read the book The Responsibility Revolution, by Jeffrey Hollender and Bill Breen

 Each student will then choose one of “CR’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens 2010” (CR100) from the list posted in the Course Documents section of Blackboard (Bb).

 Research the activities that earned your CR100 Corporation a place on the list.

 Write a three to four (3 minimum, 4 maximum) page paper that addresses the items detailed below.

 Grades will be based on an analysis of the paper’s content, writing style (organization, spelling, grammar, etc.) and the student’s compliance with the assignment’s specific requirements.

The paper should address the following:

 A brief summary of the “socially responsible” ideas practiced by some of the organizations detailed in the The Responsibility Revolution (focus on a few of the ideas that you found to be particularly innovative; recycling office paper, while a good thing, is not particularly innovative);

 A brief synopsis of the history, mission, vision, and goals of the CR100 organization that you selected.

 An analysis of your CR100 organization’s primary and secondary stakeholders;

 An analysis of your CR100 organization’s performance in meeting its corporate responsibilities, including its economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities;

 Compare and contrast the CR100 organization that you selected with one or more of the companies discussed in the book (e.g. For example, Seventh Generation places great emphasis on accountability, transparency, and employee engagement for improving sustainability. What does your CR100 organization place its emphasis on?);

 Describe how the socially responsible activities of your CR100 organization make the world a better place…or not. Do not hesitate to point out activities that your CR100 organization does that are really just “window dressing” (i.e. a marketing ploy).

Formatting Requirements:

All papers must (no exceptions) meet all of the following formatting requirements.

 The first page of the paper should include the student’s name and BUS221 Section E1

12

 The paper should be double spaced with no more than two (2) spaces between paragraphs, 12 pt., Times New Roman font. 1 inch top, bottom and side margins.

Leadership Self-Assessment

The Leadership Self-Assessment is a four part assignment. You are welcome to use Part 1, Part 2, etc. as headings in your work. Do answer in narrative and not bulleted lists or incomplete sentences (with some exceptions for SMART goals/objectives). Be sure and use APA citations if you bring in material from another source.

Part 1: Leadership Interest. Describe your interest in leadership right now and where you wish to be. Are you a leader or do you wish to become one? Is this independent or dependent on being in a traditional leadership position (such as a manager)? Are you not interested in leadership and wish to be a follower? Keep in mind that leaders and followers often need the same skills and even though being a follower is a fine option; participate in the rest of the project with the intent to develop your leadership skills.

Part 2: Take the “Your Leadership Style” Assessment in the Lussier and Achua text. Go to the textbook in “Reading and Assignments” under Week 2’s Chapter 3: Leadership Behavior and Motivation. The quiz is on page 6 of 56 and entitled “Self-Assessment Exercise 3-1: Your Leadership Style”. The instructions for scoring the quiz are on page 8. What were your results? Do you think you have a good balance between task leadership and people leadership? Where would you like to be?

Part 3: SMART goals. Look back to your leadership goals in Part 1 of the project. How will you reach them? Create SMART* goals to show a road map on how you will get from there to here. You may want to review Lussier and Achua’s Model 3-1: Writing Effective Objectives Model (Module 2 of B6027: Chapter 3: Leadership Behavior and Motivation, p. 36)

*SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely.

Part 4: Mock interview. Pick any two of the following six interview questions and write a short answer response on any TWO of them. Your answers should not be geared to someone WITHOUT academic knowledge of the topic of leadership.

Describe your top three leadership skills.
Tell me about the best leader you have worked for. What made him or her successful?
Tell me about a time you had to take on an unexpected leadership role.
Describe your leadership style.
What is your biggest weakness as a leader?
What leadership trait would you like to develop and how do you plan on making strides in that direction this year?
