Endangered species
Do some research on your own about endangered species of animals and plants and think about the biological, ethical and economic aspects of the problem. Then, during the week, be sure to address the following questions:
1.What responsibilities do we, as humans, have to other species?
2.How do the extinctions of other creatures affect humans directly and indirectly?
3.Should people give up gains in order to prevent the death of other creatures?
4.What ethical responsibilities do we have to other creatures on the planet?
5.Why are decisions about recovery and preservation of these creatures so complicated?
6.If you were elected president, what would your official policy on endangered species be? What tradeoffs would you make in order to enforce your policy?
Happy accidents in science
1.What examples of learning by “happy accident” have you experienced in your own life?
2.What do you think it means for a person (especially a scientist) to have a “prepared mind,” as Pasteur describes?
3.How can a person prepare his or her mind to be open to chance?
4.What about science makes it particularly good at allowing people to analyze their accidents?
5.What are some risks associated with research that involves chance? [Hint: Do some reading about Marie and Pierre Curie http://www.energyquest.ca.gov/scientists/curie.html
