Approaches to Research in the Social Sciences

You have two options for this one. Pick either the quantitative approach with a questionnaire design or the qualitative approach with the design of an interview guide.

Option 1
Develop a questionnaire and analyse the data (Approximately 2000 words):

Imagine you are taking part in a project evaluating undergraduate students’ experience of University and Middlesex University in particular. The objectives of the study are as follows:

1) Explore how students use the different university’s services and facilities and the differences (e.g. in demographics, behaviour or profiles)
2) Explore how students spend their time while at university.
3) Explore how students combine their studies and other aspects of their lives.
As an experienced quantitative researcher you have been asked to create a questionnaire to be used with students at Middlesex University.
A crucial part of good research design concerns making sure that the questionnaire design addresses the needs and the objectives of the research. In other words, it is important to ensure that the questions asked are the right ones. To move from the research objectives to deciding what are the right questions to put on a questionnaire is a key aspect that needs to be addressed by the researcher.

Task:
Design a questionnaire which must include:
a) An introduction to the research, the researcher and explain any confidentiality issue;
b) Develop 20 questions which relate to the objectives of the research. Different types of questions should be used, e.g. closed, single vs. multiple responses, ranking, and rating. Due to the difficulty of analysing open responses, you should not include these in your questionnaire.
Tutors, during seminars, will assist you throughout this process design;
c) Carry out the questionnaire with 10 students from SOC2500; The questionnaire can be administered face to face and you may do so after the lecture for example or after your seminar. You also have the option to link your questionnaire on facebook or even try survey monkey www.surveymonkey.com or Polleverywhere http://www.polleverywhere.com/. Make sure you explain in your reflexive report how you chose to proceed and for what reason.
d) Write a brief reflective report (1500 words) which explains
a. The overall results of the questionnaires;
b. How you have determined a certain set of questions and responses to those questions;
c. Describing your experience of conducting a quantitative interview reflecting on the advantages and disadvantages of such an approach.
Note: it is important that you draw on the relevant and appropriate literature on research methods in your reflective report.
What to include in your final assignment:

1) The final questionnaire
2) The reflexive report

Assessment Criteria: Your work will be judged on the extent to which you have followed the outlined brief successfully. Your lecturer will specifically look at:

 The extent to which the questions meet the objectives of the study;
 The appropriateness of formulation of the question and responses;
 How you have carried out the overall analysis of the results;
 The overall presentation of your work.

Option 2
Develop an Interview Guide and Analyse the Data (Approximately 2000 words):

Task:
Design a question an interview guide which must include:
1) An introduction to the research, the researcher and explain any confidentiality issue;
2) Develop 10 questions which relate to the objectives of the research. Because it is a qualitative interview, the question must remain open to allow for a discussion. A qualitative interview is looking in-depth at an issue allowing for lengthier responses from the respondents but do not worry:
a. More information will be given during lecture on the qualitative interview;
b. Tutors, during seminars, will assist you throughout this process design.
3) Carry out the interview with 4 students from SOC2500; you may do so after the lecture for example or after your seminar.
4) You can choose to record the interviews and transcribe the interviews or you can take notes during the interview. It will depend on your research preferences as well as to what the respondents will consent to.
5) Write a brief reflective report (1500 words) which highlights:
a. The main themes coming out of the interviews;
b. How you have determined a certain set of questions;
c. Describing your experience of conducting a qualitative interview reflecting on the advantages and disadvantages of such an approach.
Note: it is important that you draw on the relevant and appropriate literature on research methods in your reflective report.

What to include in your final assignment:

1) The interview guide
2) The reflexive report

Addictive Behaviour

In relation to any one substance or behaviour, CRITICALLY EVALUATE HOW psychological theories can explain why some people develop an addiction to that substance or behaviour. What implications do those theories have for reducing the harm associated with such an addiction?

I was wanting to look into either Hookah pipe addiction, or that of social media addiction. I would be happy with either of these.

Landlord and Tenant Commercial Law

You act for the owner of an old industrial estate. The estate is considered suitable for office development. All around the subject property the previously existing older industrial units have been replaced by modern office buildings. The estate your client owns consists of 5 buildings.

Unit 1) was let on a 15 year FRI lease inside the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 with effect from September 2000. The tenant improved this property by building an extension and adding air-conditioning at a cost of £125,000 in 2004. These works would add approximately £14500 to the rental value if rentalised. Yields in the area are around 8%.

Unit 2) was again let on a 15 year FRI lease inside the Act from September 2000, here the tenant is not in occupation and is paying the rent due late – although the rent is being paid – they have been paying late for some time.

Unit 3) was let on a 6 year IR only lease from 2009. This lease is not within the security of tenure provisions of the 1954 Landlord and Tenant Act.

Unit 4) was let on a 15 year FRI lease from June 2004 it contains a rolling break that either party may exercise every year (from lease commencement) with a year’s notice. To exercise the break either party must give one year’s written notice. The break is conditional upon the material covenants within the lease having been complied with. The unit appears to be in a very poor condition even allowing for its age and the setting.

Unit 5) Is presently vacant, although there is strong interest from occupiers in taking this space, to use as cheap storage. Your client is minded to let the space short term but requires advice as to the basis upon which this should be achieved.

You are required to comment on how you would structure vacant possession of the units for your client, over what time frame and how, what would you need to put in place in order to be able to achieve this? What compensation if any would be payable to any tenant. You can give your answer in the form of a professional report with case references and overall strategy, by all means use time lines/Gant charts.

Death by Fire

Assignment: This assignment is based on information from the film, Death by Fire. You may watch the film online: https://video.pbs.org/video/1618590505/. After watching the film, please write a response to the question posted separately. This will count as a Point Earning Opportunity (PEO), as we will not hold class during the week of Thanksgiving.
The video presents the case of Cameron Todd Willingham. This assignment focuses on the contemporary issue of capital punishment (as depicted in Death by Fire) but will require you to apply knowledge from Week 12 readings and lectures. Specifically, I will be evaluating your ability to apply your knowledge of the topics covered in class to the topics presented in the film. In other words, you will need to be able to identify how specific examples from the film relate to (are similar to or different from) concepts from lecture, the textbook and class discussions. Successfully doing this will require that you demonstrate mastery and understanding of the course materials (i.e., you will need to explain in your own words any concepts that would not be understood by any educated reader who is not familiar with the topics at hand).
Please answer each of the following questions in 1-2 pages each or 5-6 pages, total (typed, double-spaced, 11 or 12 point font). You may use your textbook and/or notes but should NOT use outside sources (i.e., from the Internet, other than the links included on this sheet) or work with other students. Please do not use direct quotations from the book or supplemental links but rather paraphrase ideas in your own words.

1. Summarize the major facts of Cameron Todd Willinghams case, as presented in film. These observations are the data that you will need to explain in your essay. Limit this answer to 1 page (double-spaced).

Summarize the major arguments made by proponents of capital punishment (Hint: you will need to define in your own words the 8 bulleted points discussed in lecture). Are there any parallels between these concepts and the film? Provide examples from the film (e.g., the prosecutions case) that were used in favor of executing Willingham.
Summarize the major arguments made by opponents of capital punishment (Hint: you will need to define in your own words the 4 bulleted points discussed in lecture). Are there any parallels between these concepts and the film? Provide examples from the film (e.g., the defenses case) that were used to oppose Willinghams execution.
Summarize the causes of wrongful conviction and execution (Hint: you will need to define in your own words the 7 bulleted points discussed in lecture). Was Cameron Todd Willingham wrongfully executed? Come to your own conclusion and develop an argument based on the facts of case. In other words, make case arguing why or why not using specific concepts from lecture and examples from the film.

Song report

Choose a hit song that you believe is or will be a classic created by an artist who you believe we will still be paying attention to in 20 to 30 years

The focus of this assignment has 3 primary elements
1) analyze the musical influences that led to the composition of the song
2) comment on and research the songs potential longevity as a hit or the artists potential for pop immortality
3) discuss the primary influences on the artist or band who recorded the song

2) Written report (individual work only please) This report should be 2-3 pages (600 words), typed, with footnotes if necessary and in your own words.
 see bullets 2 and 3 above
 The written report should go into more detail about how the chosen recording artist fits into the history of rock and R&B. Who were their major influences? What aspects of the song can be traced to various historic styles and musical ingredients? Why will we still care about this artist or band in 25 years?
 Research critical writing and commentary on the song and or artist to back up your claims that we will still be caring about this artist in the year 2035. Use and credit at least 3 sources. Try to find relevant quotations that support your argument.

Week 1 Discussion DQ2

You are the registered nurse performing a health assessment on a newborn infant. From the functional health pattern portion of the assessment, you learn the mother is reluctant to breastfeed her baby. One of the most important aspects of health promotion in the infant is nutritional status. At this time, you take the opportunity to inform the mother about the benefits of breastfeeding. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Dietetic Association have released recommendations and position statements in support of breastfeeding. In addition, research has shown that the positive effects of breastfeeding last into adulthood. Find a research article that discusses the positive impacts of breastfeeding not only in infancy but also later in life. Summarize the article, and write one or two paragraphs stating how you would share this information with the mother to encourage the mother to breastfeed her baby. List community resources that are available for breastfeeding mothers. Include in-text citations and references for each of the scholarly sources used.
