reflection 2

Your assignment for these papers is to:
1. Briefly summarize the overall theme of the readings( Carroll: p.71-94 ), taken together and/or separately
(Knowledge/Comprehension).
2. Point out tensions, contradictions, unaddressed issues, or points that you don’t understand in the readings (Evaluation).
3. As a rough guide, numbers 1 & 2 should take up about ¾ of the first page.
4. Demonstrate your own synthesis and application through relating your points from numbers
1 and 2 to a specific single example from your career, current or future
(Application/Synthesis).
a. You should be very specific, but please refrain from using individual’s or organizational names, rather refer to them either with pseudonyms or by title (such as “a 10th grade English teacher”, or “the principal”).
b. Do not use an example from this course.
c. Through the example, your aim is to demonstrate your application of what you have learned from the readings, and how you may (or may not) be able to apply what you
have learned. Note: This section of the paper should be the majority (it should take up the entire second page, if not more).
5. In the final paragraph of your reflection, you should make sure that you bring the reading
back to your example application, to ensure that you have integrated the reading and your single specific example. However, better is to integrate the reading throughout your example.
6. Your purpose in these reflection papers is to demonstrate your new knowledge through the
application of the reading through an evaluation of your very specific example.
7. Each reflection paper should be 2 pages, double-spaced. You may go over slightly if you’re
onto a particularly good idea.
8. Linking to the previous readings from the course is highly recommended.
9. NOTE: Reading Reflection & Critique papers uploaded after 10:00 a.m. on the day of class
will not be accepted!
10. NOTE: For each day’s readings, a (*) indicates the reading your reflection paper should
focus on. Two (*) indicates that you should integrate the readings.

gratitude letter

The focus this week is on family, friendships, and romantic relationships. First, read three chapters in the textbook: Chapter 5 – The “F” Word: Families, Chapter 6 – Beyond Your Buddy List: Real Friendships, and Chapter 7 – Crazy in Love: Relationships and Mental Health.

In Chapter 5, Szabo and Hall write, “There are a lot of homes where the parents may care, but yet they don’t know how to talk about feelings” (p. 140). I think it’s fair to say that the word “parents” could easily be substituted with the words “ family members.” There are many family members – fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, uncles, aunts, cousins – who truly care about each other, but don’t know how to talk about feelings. Just communicating with family members about general day-to-day stuff can sometimes be a struggle. It’s no wonder we find communicating with family members about emotions a bridge too daunting to cross. Talking about our own emotions and listening to how others feel takes time, energy, and the willingness to put ourselves on the line. Fear, anxiety, anger, embarrassment, pride, not knowing the right words to say… all of these things get in the way of us communicating and connecting with family members.

Expressing gratitude is a powerful way to enhance relationships and open lines of communication. Dr. Seligman, one of the founders of the field of positive psychology, recommends writing gratitude letters as a way to enrich the life of the person conveying the appreciation, as well as the life of the recipient.

For the assignment this week, write a 500-word minimum gratitude letter to someone in your family and post it on your Group Blog. In your gratitude letter, focus on virtues and character strengths you admire about this family member. (25 points)

Project Management Scope Statement

Consider that you have been assigned as a PM to a new project to build a new international airport in a culturally sensitive area in the American Southwest. The area has a large population who are members of the Navajo tribe of Native Americans as well as a number of archeologically significant ruins and historically significant buildings. You have a charter but it is only a very high level document ("Build an airport for $10M in 24 months"). Consider this project as you answer the following questions and develop a short scope statement that includes:

A list of some of the objectives and some of the primary deliverables for this project? That is, what objectives would you want to see as a project manager in completing a successful project. (Use your imagination here – you may interpret this scope statement as you wish – just be prepared to defend your answer.) You may want to frame your list using the construct "The airport authority requires the capability to…" to help you develop ideas.

Then answer the following questions based on your scope statement:

What stakeholders would be interested in evaluating this project?
What evaluation questions would the stakeholders ask?
Are these questions related to measures of efficiency, effectiveness or impact? (Listen to the lecture first – we are asking tactical evaluation questions – not questions about final cost or schedule.)
How could you get answers to these evaluation questions? (We haven’t discussed this yet so any creative ideas are welcome here.)
