INTRODUCTION TO APPLIED FINANCE

PLEASE READ THE STUDY GUIDE week 1 – 5 FOR FORMULAS AND ALL INSTRUCTIONS.

Assessment Brief:
Your client has recently retired and has received a superannuation payout of $750,000 earned from an illustrious career in Marketing, received in a lump sum. Your client would like to help provide for their grand children’s future and therefore has decided to invest the lot. Your client has identified three investment options that they are interested in and want your professional advice as a finance expert on which investment you believe they should choose.
Option 1: involves placing the $750,000 into a Community Bank Online Saver account at that is guaranteed to return $75,000 at the end of each year for 10 years (starting at the end of the first year) after which time the client would then get their $750,000 back.
Option 2: involves investing the total of $750,000 to buy 3 small 1 bedroom units. Each unit will then be rented out for $30,000 a year with the rent received at the end of the year commencing at the end of year 1. The rent is guaranteed as the apartments are rented out to

the Army and they have signed a rental contract for ten years. After the ten years the Army has agreed via a signed contract to buy the units for a total of $1,000,000 in cash.
Option 3: involves investing in a brand new scheme whereby the client would be required to invest the total of $750,000 into an orange juice business, $250,000 upfront to plant the oranges and set up the juice factory, and then $50,000 a year for 10 years for picking the oranges and juice factory maintenance. The juice factory will not generate any orange juice for the first two years. At the end of the third year the juice factory is expected to generate $20,000 of orange juice and will increase production by $30,000 per year. Ten years after the oranges are planted they cease yielding a commercial quantity of juice and the juice factory is sold to a neighbouring farmer for $100,000 in cash.
You have perused a number of other potential investment opportunities and in identifying these investment opportunities you have decided that your client’s minimum required rate of return that the chosen investment will need to generate is 12% per annum.
You are required to write a 1000 word report for your client that covers the following:
– An introduction to the report;
– A discussion, analysis and ranking of each investment using Net Present Value ?(NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and the Payback Period (PP);
– A discussion overall which investment should be chosen (i.e. what is the best ?investment for the client to choose and why)
– A discussion of the risks involved in each investment;
– A discussion of the limitations of using the NPV, IRR and the PP to evaluate ?investments;
– A conclusion to the report;
– An appendix to your report that includes the calculations for the NPV, IRR and PP for ?Investment 1, 2 and 3.

EXPO in UAE “Dubai”

Please do expand those points below into an argumentive analysis essay. Please refer to the benefits and whom and how . You could check previous expo’s in other countries and see how it did change and benefit the place.
Make sure that it’s is analysis argument that should have proof and support from academic sources or even governmental/ statistics researches.

In the year 2020, the World Expo is going to be held in one truly deserving nation. This has seen many counties bidding for this exceptional opportunity (Gulf News, 1). The world Expo is a lucrative biennial meeting which rivals Olympic Games both in prestige, as well as, in scale. Dubai is surely the best suited in hosting the 2020 world Expo.
In awarding the Expo contract, does the bid of Dubai make perfect sense?
Dubai has transformed itself into the leading destination for:
Tourism.
Venues.
Business and trade.
Festivals and attractions.
Coordination with private sector.
ii. Do the economical aspects contribute to the hosting of the 2020 world Expo?
iii. The Expo will result to large amount of traffic pouring in the country. This will be of great economic benefits to:
a. Likely benefits to the airline industry.
b. Likely benefits to the RTA (road transportation authority).
c. Likely benefits the hotel, as well as, accommodation industry.
c. The overall benefit to the economy of Dubai.
Owing to the economic aspect of Dubai such as the best airline industry, hotel and accommodation, venues, and tourism destination coordinated by both public and private sector, it is prudent to award the World Expo contract to the city not just as a reward for this but also due to its capability.

Mental Health Counseling

Instruction

Crisis Management and Response

It seems every news story contains some discussion of a crisis situation, natural or man-made disaster, or trauma-causing event. These domestic or international crises and disasters can occur on an individual scale, such as abuse, or on a societal scale, such as a school shooting or a tsunami. Experiences such as these are not new. However, the focus on these experiences from a mental health standpoint is somewhat new. Mental health counselors have pivotal roles in working with those who are impacted by crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events, be it as a first line responder, disaster mental health volunteer, trauma counselor, and/or trainer/consultant.

For this Discussion, you explore the mental health counseling profession’s focus on crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the article, “A Calming Presence.” Think about why there is an increasing focus on crises and disasters in the mental health counseling profession. Reflect on events that occurred that contributed to the focus of the profession on disasters and crises.
  • Review the article, “Natural and Manmade Disasters and Mental Health.” Think about natural and man-made disasters and crises you have seen in the news and why there is an increased focus on the mental health of the survivors.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3

an explanation of why natural and man-made disasters, crises, and other trauma-causing events have become a focus of the mental health counseling profession. Explain the potential implications of this focus on the mental health counseling profession.

PSYC 300 RESEARCH PROJECT STUDY DESCRIPTION

The data for the Research Project is posted in an Excel spreadsheet in the Course Content of our classroom. I chose data contributed by college students associated with a number of American universities. Each team will need to determine which variables in this data set will serve as independent and dependent for their report (there are several valid possibilities). You will also choose the appropriate statistical analysis based on this choice. You should choose only one independent variable and one dependent variable (if anyone wants to attempt a more complex analysis, contact me as soon as possible to discuss and get permission after I determine whether or not I think your team can handle the necessary analyses).

Note that, while the information provided below contains important information you should include in your research report, you must use your own words in your report – do not quote from this section. Write up the information as you understand it in your own words and use APA style references as appropriate. You can use the reference mentioned below, but you will need to elaborate significantly in your introduction section based on the independent and dependent variables you choose to examine. Your method section may also differ from the information presented below; for example, if you choose to only examine visual data, then you don’t need to discuss auditory data (or visa versa). The choices your team makes will determine what information needs to be reported in your paper and poster.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN APA ONLINE STUDIES
Go to http://opl.apa.org and find the “Numerical Memory” experiment (there are a variety of ways to get to here). Our class is registered as “PSYC300 – Fall 2012”. It’s also listed under “Research Methods” for “Univerisity of Maryland University C” and the class ID is 5706. You will need that class ID to have your responses recorded for future use by my classes.

You will go through all the steps that every other subject went through (including practice and actual participation in the experiment). Make sure you take notes or keep screen shots of what the experience is like so you can refer back when you are writing the Method section for your report.
At the end of your succesful participation in the study, you will be given your User ID . This is your confirmation that your data has been successfully recorded. Turn in this number to the Study Participation conference in order to receive credit for participation.
This website has several very nice tutorials on how to conduct descriptive and inferential statistical analyses in Excel (http://opl.apa.org/TeacherTour.aspx) and their examples use data from very similar spreadsheets.
NUMERICAL MEMORY EXPERIMENT
(APA Editor: Karen Brakke) {further editing by Lorri Cerro}
Brief Introduction
The presentation of a series of digits orally by an examiner to an examinee is a common measurement typically referred to as Digit Span in many intelligence measures. In the majority of these intelligence tests, the researcher presents the digits to the examinee in an auditory format only, at which time the examinee repeats the digits back to the examiner. The rationale for this type of task is that it provides a good measure of short-term auditory memory and attention. Because the participant must orally recall the auditory information in the proper sequence, the digit span task is often described as a sequencing task (Sattler, 1992). This Numerical Memory experiment employs a similar format to Digit Span tasks found in assessment instruments, comparing the individual’s short-term memory for digits presented in an auditory versus visual format.
Study Details
DESIGN: This study uses a within-subjects design comparing digit recall for numerical stimuli presented in an auditory and visual format. {While the basic design of this study is within-subjects, there are also several between-subjects variables reported in the data set to facilitate different types of analyses. How you describe the design of your team’s study in your research report depends on the choices you make. That means your paper should describe the study as you identify the variables, not the way it is described for the original study.}
EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS: Computers used in this experiment must have a sound card. Research participants must either use a earphones or a pair of speakers plugged into the “audio out” jack on the sound card.
STIMULI: The stimuli for this study consist of numerical values ranging from 0 to 9. These numerical values are presented to the research participant in one of two formats: visual or auditory. The auditory digits (AD) are voice input recorded using Microsoft Window’s Sound Recorder. Each AD was edited down to approximately 1 second in duration with equivalent amplitudes. Using this procedure, 10 digits were approximately equivalent in length and intensity. The 10 visual digits (VD) were produced using an Authorware5 display icon. Each VD was produced in Times New Roman font in black text with a 175-font size. The display time for each VD was set for 1 second.
TASK: Each participant engages is two tasks. The participant is presented with either the VIS (visual presentation) or AUD (audio presentation) task, followed by the alternate task (AUD or VIS). The order of task presentation is randomized for each participant. Both the VIS and AUD tasks involve the presentation of a sequence of numbers presented in a random order. Each task begins with a sequence that is one digit in length. The length of the sequence increases by one digit after a level has been presented twice. Each sequence of digits presented to the participant is randomized and, therefore, unique. Research participants move to the next level of difficulty if they respond correctly to at least one of the two trials presented at each level. This process continues until the participants miss both trials at a given level, at which time participants will either complete the second task (AUD or VIS), or the experiment will be terminated.

Figure 1
As illustrated in Figure 1, data are compiled in an Excel spreadsheet or in a comma delimited file with the following labels:

USERID – the value assigned to the individual participant
CLASSID – the value affiliated with the registered course
GENDER & AGE are self explanatory
DATE – the date of subject participation
TIME – elapsed number of seconds for completion of the entire experiment
AUD – data reflect, similar to the Digit Span WISC-III Subtest, the number of items in correct sequence (Auditory format). The trial is terminated when the participant fails two consecutive trials in any series.
VIS – data reflect, similar to the Digit Span WISC-III Subtest, the number of items in correct sequence (Visual format). The trial is terminated when the participant fails two consecutive trials in any series.

Doing Ethnography – “Through the Looking Glass”

1. Weekly Activity- Doing Ethnography – “Through the Looking Glass”

(Robbins defines the ethnographic method as “The immersion of researchers in the lives and cultures of the people they are trying to understand in order to comprehend the meanings these people ascribe to their existence”. An ethnography is the report of your experiences that might include, a journal, surveys, questionnaires, photos, film, interviews, and any other information you have gathered.)

Here‘s what I’d like you to do.

I’d like you to choose a nearby location in which you will observe and interpret the symbols and symbolic interaction you see there.. It could be a church, a fast food restaurant, a coffeehouse, a nightclub (if you are old enough), a bank…anything you think will tell you something culturally significant. Examine this setting as a “CULTURAL TEXT”. (See p.20). That is, think of the setting as a text made of significant symbols that tell you something about the meaning Americans assign to certain areas of their life. This can include the interaction between the people you are observing.

From observing the symbols or interaction among the populace, what might you conclude about the following:

FOOD
GENDER Roles/Stereotypes FAMILY/Kinship
HEALTH
ECONOMICS
RITUAL

I want you to go at least once to make some observations and write some field notes on the topics listed above. Important: Be certain to specify the key symbols that carry the meanings that Americans assign to these certain areas. Remember…this is an electronic document. You can include pictures if you have that capability.

This paper is worth 40 points. This paper must be at least 750 words long, 12-point font (preferably Times New Roman or Arial) and double-spaced. It must also have your name on it. (This is worth points)
