Architecture, Building and Planning

The final part of the paper will be an expansion of you previous papers. It should be 5-7 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font (no more than 3000 words). The goal of this paper is to analyze your building in relation to its architectural, cultural, social, political, environmental, and/or historical context. It will require you to reflect on your observations, conduct additional research, and make meaningful connections. The point of this paper is to place your building in the broader context of the history of architecture and this course. It should not just be a summary of the previous parts of the paper. Rather those papers are a starting point for you to think more deeply about the implications your building has on the type of material we discuss in this class. This is also your chance to explore what really interests you about the building you have chosen.
Your paper must have a clear thesis statement that puts forth an original argument. You are not just summarizing what has been discussed in class but synthesizing your research and crafting a well-defined argument that will be supported by examples in the body text. The thesis statement should dictate what the rest of your paper will focus on. Your paper should also be well organized with a logical progression from the introduction with a clear thesis statement in the first paragraph all the way to the conclusion.
Additionally, this paper should have footnotes where needed and a full bibliography of all the sources you consulted during your research. In regards to this, you are encouraged to use as many sources as possible for this paper in addition to the three examined for the annotated bibliography. This paper should demonstrate a substantial level of research. It should also be illustrated with relevant images. Please see the “Notes on Written Assignments” handouts for other information

Fiscal Policy: Government Expenditures and Revenues, Budget, National Debt

Module 3 – SLP

Fiscal Policy: Government Expenditures and Revenues, Budget, National Debt

Introduction Background Information Case assignment Session Long Project Objectives

All links tested on June 15, 2012

Fiscal policies can have both subtle and major affects on almost all organizations. The purpose of this SLP assignment is to have you examine your organization regarding how it is affected by these economic variables and policies.

You are to place yourself in the position of being a paid lobbyist for your organization. Pick two or three major fiscal policy initiatives you would lobby Congress about. However, this is not in general, this is for your organization, not for the economy as a whole, so make sure to take that specific focus. Again, if you’re using an unconventional organization, you may have to get a little creative here.

1. As your organization’s lobbyist, what would you like to see done by the Federal government that would be of help to your organization? As a lobbyist it is not your job to be concerned with the deficit, or the environment, or the general health of the financial system (unless, of course, you are lobbying for an environmental, financial, or deficit reduction group). Your answer to this question can give an interesting perspective as to how lobbying can distort economic policy and decisions. CAUTION: I am not looking for general comments that could apply to the country as a whole or any given organization, what I want is comments that are relevant specifically to your organization.

There are three articles below on the pros and cons of lobbying, feel free to google the subject to find more:

http://www.chiff.com/society/lobby.htm

http://www.reuters.com/article/2009/09/13/obama-lobbying-idUSN1348032520090913
2. The majority of lobbying efforts centers around fiscal policy. Please discuss your opinions on lobbying regarding if it is useful and should continue as is, if it should continue but with constraints to limit how much is done, or if it should be eliminated.

SLP assignment expectations:

Use information from the modular background readings as well as any good quality resource you can find. Make sure you cite all resources you use and provide a reference list at the end of your paper.

LENGTH: 2-3 typed and double-spaced pages.

In addition to the overall quality, depth, grammar, and organization of the paper, the following will, in particular, be assessed:

1.. Analytical ability in relating Federal policies to the specifics of your organization.

2. Your ability to relate Federal government activity to your specific organization.

Review and Analysis of Missa Mirabillis, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op.43, Don Nobis Pacem

Paragraph 1: Tell date, place and title of performance. Scan in a program if possible.? Give background on the performance, tell something about the performers, and place the performance in some historical perspective. What is your interest in the performance?
Paragraph 2: Using the “Description, Analysis and Interpretation” information below, describe the performance in general. Examine the setting and staging, costumes, lighting, musical interpretation. Describe each piece of music and your reaction to it. Give details.
1. Description consists of naming and describing all that you see in the work of art. Imagine, for instance, that you are an archaeologist and you want to write a report about what you have seen. You would want to write a very objective account (the facts) of what you had just discovered. Start your description by providing basic information such as the work’s name, the artist’s name, the date, the location, etc. Relate the work to its historical period. Discuss the ways in which the work’s content and/or style are characteristic of that historical period. Next, describe in objective terms everything that you see in the artwork. Imagine that you are telling someone who has never seen a work of art what the artifact looks like to you. Describe its size, shape, color, texture, its placement, etc–all facts that you can gain from a good photograph and/or factual description. You may want to consult an outside source here, but really this section should focus mainly on your immediate perceptions of the work of art. Use your textbook as a starting place for basic descriptive information. You’ll have the chance to analyze and interpret the work in the following two sections, so make sure to focus entirely on descriptive elements here. It doesn’t matter if you understand the cultural context of the artifact at this point. You are just describing and documenting what you perceive through the understanding of someone living in modern times. Take a look at the following site for more ideas/information on describing art.
2. Formal Analysis consists of exploring the elements of composition. The tools of the artist, architect, designer, photographer, movie maker, sculptor etc. are color (light), texture, space, color and shape (form). Through formal analysis, you will explore how the artist uses these elements to create a work of art and meaning within the composition. You will need to name and discuss each of the elements of composition. This is the section where you will need to rely outside sources of information. Use www.google.com or one of the other search tools outlined in Unit 1 to explore the web and locate relevant sources. (If you cannot locate sources, you may want to switch your topic.) As you analyze the piece, you’ll be breaking it down into its component parts and focusing on the relationships between these parts in hopes of gaining an understanding of how the parts work together to form a unified whole. Ask WHY did the artist use this color, shape, texture, size, etc.? Ask WHY did the artist include this particular design element? Ask HOW did the artist produce a certain effect? Take a look at the following site for more ideas/information on analyzing art.
3. Interpretation is the overall meaning through the perspective of the individual viewer. What does the artifact “say” to you? How has the artist created meaning or content for you, the viewer, within the artwork? What is the function of the piece? What cultural values are suggested by or in the work? Provide examples from the work to support your answer. This section is entirely devoted to YOUR reactions, YOUR impressions! Each person in the class may have a different understanding or interpretation of a work of art. We all come from various backgrounds and experiences. We look at things differently. There is no right or wrong in interpreting a work of art. The only wrong way would be to not include an interpretation in your paper.
Documenting Sources & Plagiarism: You must document any outside sources of information you include as part of your discussion/analysis using proper MLA (Modern Language Association) format. Any information that is not entirely your own, including quotations, statistics AND paraphrased or summarized material, should be correctly documented.
Paragraph 3: Pick one feature of the performance and examine it in detail.? You might choose one song, one actor, one act or segment of the performance. Describe why this one aspect was either the very best or the very worst element of the performance.
Paragraph 4: Give your overall reaction to the performance. What does this performance say about our culture??
