This essay should be double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point, and 1 inch margins. This essay should be Turabian Style meaning that this essay should include footnotes. This essay should answer the prompt below. In the 15th and 16th centuries, European nations and the Roman Catholic Church issued policies and declarations on the status and nature of Indigenous Nations they encountered. Furthermore in the following centuries, following the American Revolution, the United States government mounted a new approach to Indian policy in which Indigenous peoples would be assimilated into the dominant society. This new approach in federal Indian policy attacked Indigenous nations’ ability to maintain control and sovereignty over their own lands, enforce traditional laws and deliver justice following well-established traditional forms, and maintain their political structures. Moreover, Indigenous people were subjected to the government’s goals of transforming them into yeoman farmers and an agrarian-based society. Drawing significantly upon class readings, carefully consider the following questions: How does the concept of Race further complicate the impressions of Indigenous Peoples in North America? What policies reflect these racial attitudes and policies of removal and assimilation? In what ways are the policies of detribalization of the 1880’s similar to the racial attitudes of the previous eras; for example, the project of civilization in the 1790’s-1820’s and the policy of removal in the 1830’s? What has changed? What has remained the same? In addition to assigned readings, your midterm essay will be graded on your ability to demonstrated knowledge of the information presented in lecture, class discussions, and films alongside your own developing knowledge of Federal Indian Policy.
