Why were the results of the CSF study classic for the diagnosis of MS?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Case Studies
A 35-year-old woman was active in jogging and horseback riding until 1 year ago. During
the past year she began to notice severe weakness and paresthesias in her legs. Her gait
became unsteady, and she developed loss of vision in one eye. A neurologist suspected
multiple sclerosis (MS) and ordered the following studies:
Studies Results
Routine laboratory work Within normal limits (WNL)
Lumbar puncture with cerebrospinal fluid
(CSF) examination, p. 651
Immunoglobulin (Ig) G index 0.8 (normal: 0.3-0.7)
IgG determination 20% (normal: 0%-11% of total protein)
Oligoclonal bands Present (normal: none)
Evoked potentials (EPs), p. 562
Visual-evoked potentials Abnormal latency
Auditory brainstem-evoked potentials Normal
Somatosensory-evoked responses Abnormal latency
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), p. 1106 Plaques indicative of multiple sclerosis
Diagnostic Analysis
The wide variety of symptom manifestation often makes MS difficult to diagnose; however,
the above studies clearly identified MS as the patients problem. The CSF study results were
classic for the diagnosis of MS. The abnormal latency demonstrated on the EP studies was
the result of the demyelination process of MS. MRI revealed plaques indicative of MS.
The patient was given prednisone to decrease the inflammation and associated edema of the
myelin sheath. When remission occurred, she was instructed about factors that exacerbate,
prevent, or ameliorate symptoms.
Critical Thinking Questions

2. What is latency, and why is it increased in MS?

Which of the teacher dispositions relates to the concept of fairness? How does a teacher display fairness in the classroom?Give two concrete examples.

The disposition to teach document specifically addresses fairness by stating Educators should promote social justice and equity, maintain appropriate standards of confidentiality, and exercise fairness in all areas including assessment. I also think that addressing the social and cultural atmosphere of the class and setting expectations imply fairness in some sense. I think that this means having the same expectations for all students, SPED or general education, holding each student accountable by the same standards, grading fairly without granting one student an advantage, and maintaining fair discipline throughout. I can see challenges for special education teachers in all these areas. For example, giving assessments a special education teacher needs to be mindful of assessment accommodations, but understand that the modifications need to leave the rigor and the critical content intact. Accommodations should be in place to assist the student in specific areas that they need support, not to make the work easier for one over another. Assessments should have a grading rubric that is fair for both general and special education students. I may allow a student with an IEP to use a calculator on an assessment, but not for portions of the assessment that specifically measure a students individual ability to calculate or demonstrate knowledge of a specific area. Fundamentally all of this is tricky. It means getting to know your students, awareness of their IEPs, and understanding the curriculum and how changes affect it. We owe it to our students to be creative, knowledgeable, and ultimately fair.I need a response.
