Every week we will have one assigned reading from the text. you will submit your response to Blackboard. Each response must include the following to be counted as complete, and each response must be complete to be awarded any points:

1. A paragraph-long (4-8 sentences) description of the plot – a blurb that explains A. the main characters, B. the setting C. the problem they face D. and what happens to them in the end;
2. Answer the question: “What is the emotional message of this story: what does it tell us about how humans respond to problems like this?”
3. Answer the question: “What is the philosophical message of this story: what do you think the writer believes about human relationships/ human nature/ society/ love/ death/ hope/ faith/ fear/ or a combination of those essentially human problems?”
4. Answer the question: “Is there a social problem (civil rights, sexism, environmentalism, depression, greed, class conflicts, etc.) behind this story?” Each journal should then summarize the story and answer those three questions to be counted. YES, YOU MAY WORK AHEAD.

Based on the Kentucky Administrative Regulations (902 KAR 10:085), it is assumed that for each bedroom of a house 120 gallons of waste will be produced per day.  If we assume that the house has 4 bedrooms, this would mean that a septic system has to be designed to handle 480 gallons of waste/day.  To be safe and ensure that we don’t overload our system, we are going to design for 500 gallons of waste/day.

 

A good septic system design, not only includes the tank, but the leach field which is intended to disperse the water and allow it to percolate through the soil media which allows for further treatment of the flow.  It is this leach field that you will be asked to design for this project.

 

Step 1:  Based on our design flow use EXCEL to complete the following table:

Step 2:  The area in Letcher County with which we are most concerned has a mostly silt based soil. 902 KAR 10:085 states that lateral trenches two (2) feet wide or less must be spaced on eight (8) foot centers, meaning that the center point of 1 trench to the center point of the second trench must be separated by eight (8) feet.  It also states that the maximum length of for individual trenches can be no more than 200 feet.  To make this easy we are going to assume that we can use the maximum trench length in our design.  To meet the regulations what is the minimum area required to build the leach field?

 

Step 3:  Pretend that you are working for an engineering company.  Your boss has requested that you write a short, professional memo which provides the completed table from step 1, your required leach field size from step 2, and wants you to indicate whether using a septic system and leach field in this silt based soil is a good idea.  The justification for your decision to use a septic system or not must be based on good engineering judgment and defended using sound engineering/scientific sources.  These sources must be cited and referenced properly.  This memo should be no more than 2 pages long and should be professional.

Ø Taking your key insight, (or establishing a better one) and advertising opportunity, based on Assessment 1，now build a Creative Brief, (see Moriarty et al. 2015, p. 250), that identifies your target audience with a USP/(WIIFM!)- a single minded differentiating consumer proposition.

Ø From this create 5 different ‘Big ideas’, that relate strongly to the USP, (addressing one for each of Maslow’s levels). These ideas will be A4 for print, and in rough form (semi-comprehensive layout). Now take the idea you consider to be your best standout idea, and render it in finished form in an integrated campaign for 1) print media and 2) Social or mobile media extension.

Assessment task 2: Linked Advertising Concepts

Task: Assessment 2. Students will determine their Consumer Proposition (USP) from their chosen target market and their key consumer insight discovery. Individually, students will use the theories taught in the subject, and from their interpretations of the primary consumer motivations, produce FIVE different campaign ideas appropriate to each level of Maslow’s hierarchy. Each idea must clearly demonstrate the relationship between their key insight, consumer proposition and the BIG IDEA, whilst addressing a Maslow level. Creative expositions will include appropriate headline and logo (and other mandatories where required) and will be rendered in layout form in A4 format, appropriate to the print medium. Student’s one ‘best’ standout idea, from the five different rough layouts then needs to be creatively executed in finished layout form, for two different visual channels to include 1) print and then an integrated exposition for, 2) a mobile or social media extension. The two integrated campaign ideas in finished layout form should be presented in A4 document format and be accompanied with an introduction and 250 word creative rationale.
