A good research question should match the purpose of investigating an issue of literacy, rhetoric, and/or writing studies, and it should also provide a thesis statement or argument. These strategies can help you turn a mishmash of general ideas you have into an effective research question. They usually are:
—Focused on a specific area of curiosity within a discipline or community (for our purposes, literacy, rhetoric, and/or writing studies)
—Clear and precisely stated
—Not a topic, a fragment, a phrase, or a statement, but a questionNOTE: Research questions should not be simple questions of fact that can be answered quickly.Below are two strategies you will use to whittle your research question down into something doable. Document your notes/process work in completing both strategies A and B below in a Word/PDF file and upload it to this assignment once you are finished.A) Strategy One: Answer the simple questionsFreewriting with the following steps can quickly generate ideas for a research question.1. List your interests as they pertain to your original research questions from Post 1 or any others that have developed that are relevant to literacy, rhetoric, and/or writing studies.
2. Consider one of the items on your list. Jot down everything you know about the topic as quickly as you can (lists or paragraphs are equally useful).
3. Find the answers to the following questions, and add them to what you already have: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? So what? and What if? These represent possible gaps in your knowledge; the last four are particularly tough because they are open-ended. Open-ended questions often lead to good research questions.
4. Continue steps 2 and 3 with each item on your initial list until you have found an open-ended question you would like to explore further. Now answer this: What narrow research question are you heading toward? Once you have answered this, complete Strategy Two below.B) Strategy Two: Read to write (this is related to Task 2, so be sure to read the instructions in full)We often do not know what we are curious about until we read subjects that interest us. Search through various databases that interest you and are within the parameters of literacy, rhetoric, and writing studies. Feel free to make use of the chat function with one of the research librarians at https://library.ucf.edu/ask/ . You can also look for more general information about the topic you are interested in exploring at Google Scholar. After you have read through various texts that are related to your interests pertaining to literacy, rhetoric, and/or writing studies, try doing Strategy One again. You may find something more specific that you would like to pursue. When you have completed these strategies, answer this: What narrow research question are you now pursuing?The answer to your research question will eventually become your thesis or primary argument.
