1. Short paperdue on Sep 17 (Follow one of the following prompts.)
Assignment 1: Reflective essay on Comfort Zones Comfort zones are at the heart of racism. They define self vs. the other and us vs. them. For this assignment, reflectively engage with what comfort zones mean to you as an Asian, American, and/or Asian American subject. How do comfort zones figure in your personal, public, academic, and professional spheres? How do they take different dimensions in relation to geopolitical, linguistic, cultural, social, and religious aspects? How are the notions of safety and vulnerability take effect in relation to dominant discourses?
Assignment 2: Critical essay on Stereotypes Select a visual text (poster, digital flyer, photograph etc.) or audio-visual text (a scene from a film/TV drama, music video, advertisement etc.) that features Asian/Asian American subjects, geographies, and cultural landscapes filtered through American Orientalist imagination. Critically engage with stereotypes that are featured in it. Use theoretical scholarship (Said, Takaki, Lee) that we have discussed so far to substantiate your argument. Do not select a text we have already discussed in class.
