How will your paper be graded?
Your paper will be graded based on instructor’s judgments on these aspects:

Substance:
Your writing must have a point. It should be responsive to the question or topic you have selected for comment. Although it is not essential for you to offer an absolutely brand new argument or thesis, your paper should provide a clear opinion, summary, and/or interpretation of relevant materials.

Form:
Your paper must be well organized, proof read, and spell checked. Paragraphs should have topic sentences that provide transitions between points and explain to the reader how the material you are presenting is relevant to the topic under discussion.

Evidence:
Historians rely on evidence to substantiate their arguments. Evidence should be used to illustrate points, provide examples, establish chronology and to show the reader how you came to draw the conclusions you are presenting in the writing.

How to submit your paper?
By the due time, you should submit your paper to Turnitin.com (an online system for learning how to write with sources and to prevent plagiarism).
Here are the detailed instructions to submit your paper:
1) go to www.turnitin.com

Writing Rubric for Case Analysis Papers
____________________________________________________________

This is the writing rubric that will be used for grading your case analysis paper . [Note: In addition to the writing grade for each paper, there will also be a content grade. A content rubric also has been provided. The overall grade for the paper will be the average of the writing grade and the content grade.]

_____ Spelling (5 possible points): Given the fact that you will be creating your papers on a computer, you should use the spell checker. Remember, though, that some words sound the same even if they are spelled differently. For this reason, you may choose the wrong spelling, and the computer’s spell checker will not catch your mistake. Note: It is okay for you to have someone else check your spelling before you turn the paper in to be graded.

_____ Grammar (25 possible points): This covers such things as inappropriate or missing punctuation, as well as problems with sentence structure. Are your sentences complete? Are singular or plural subjects used with appropriate singular or plural verbs? Are sentences too long and complex? Should they be shortened and thereby clarified? [and so on] Note: It is okay for you to have someone else check your grammar before you turn the paper in to be graded. Obviously, it is not okay to have someone else write the paper for you!

_____ Clarity of Expression (15 possible points): If you are unable to express an idea clearly, then perhaps you do not understand it. In any case, the instructor cannot tell whether or not you understand what you are saying. For this reason, you should strive to express yourself very, very clearly!

_____ Flow of Ideas and Line of Reasoning (20 possible points): The paper should “flow” in the sense that one idea leads smoothly to the next one; and if arguments and reasoning are present, then conclusions should follow from clearly presented reasons. [Hint: “connecting” words and phrases – such as, therefore, so, since, because, it follows, I conclude that, consequently, hence, yet, but, nevertheless, for example, and so on – can be very helpful in constructing a smooth and logical line of reasoning.]

_____ Paragraph Structure (15 possible points): Are paragraphs well structured? Is there an appropriate opening sentence that follows from the prior paragraph? Do the sentences that come next express ideas that go well with the opening of the paragraph? Does the final sentence in the paragraph lead well to the next paragraph?

_____ Overall Paper Structure (20 possible points): Does the paper have an appropriate opening paragraph? Do the paragraphs that follow lead smoothly and successfully to the concluding paragraph? Does the paper have an appropriate concluding paragraph, given the ideas that led up to it?

Chicago movie – 2002

Your research essay should be an analysis of ONE film that incorporates the major aesthetic devices discussed in class: Shots, Mis-en-Scene, Sound, Symbolism, Color, Movement, Editing, Contrast, Lighting, and Framing.

Let us examine the process of deconstructing an entire film’s aesthetic highlights.
Analyze the final film selection through research in which you integrate information on the film as well as information on each individual aesthetic devices within it.

Final Exam Written Essay:

Compose a 9-13 page essay that thoroughly explains and analyzes your chosen topic, in this example, a film upon which you haven’t written. Begin with the history of your film, situate it historically within its time and examine the social construct surrounding it. For example, if your film was Chaplin’s The Great Dictator you would focus on the historical and social implications of World War II and the Nazi Regime as a background to the film’s themes.
As you examine the films aesthetics, remember that your reader is familiar with the film, so you do NOT RECAP the PLOT, scene for scene, but rather discuss the film as though your reader is acquainted with it and the characters so that you can freely make references to it.

You may choose to define each aesthetic principle, if you wish, and then move on to examine that device within the film, or you may analyze the film scene by scene including various aesthetics as they occur. The structure for the essay is your choice.

Include your sources which should consist of books, journals, and computer search information. You should have at least 12 + sources for your work, no more of which
Two-thirds can be from the Internet—the rest must be either books or journals (magazines). Use a traditional essay format which consists of an introduction, Thesis sentence, sections which prove your major points with specific support and correct grammar and spelling.

Format:

Word processed or typed
12 + sources Works Cited page (bibliography)
