Introduction to Linguistics

As you found out in Chapter 8 of “A Concise Introduction to Linguistics,” there is a critical age at which children must acquire a language. This assignment addresses that issue, using as two case studies Genie and Viktor, of children who failed to reach that stage in time. You are asked to view Secrets of the “Wild Child” and to answer the following question. Use both Chapter 8 of a Concise Introduction to Linguistics and the film Secrets of the Wild Child to answer these questions.

1.Describe Chomsky’s Linguistic Acquisition Device and how it fits into his Innateness Hypothesis of language acquisition (10 points)

2.Describe his Critical Period Hypothesis, based on readings and the film. (10 points)

3.How was Genie discovered by official agencies, and explain how it was that she was unable to acquire a language within a critical period. Describe the circumstances underlying this outcome. (15 points)

4.What symptoms did she display of this failure to acquire language when she was discovered? (15 points)

5.The film speaks of a forbidden experiment. What was that experiment and explain how Viktor, a speechless child discovered in 19th Century France, became a model of that experiment? (15 points)

6.Describe Genie’s long-term language development over the years since her discovery. Was she able to use a language or not over the long term>(20 points}

7.Discuss the ethical implications of research conducted in both cases. Did either child benefit from this research or not, and explain (15 points).

Critiquing Internet Sources

Ashford 3: – Week 2 – Assignment 2

Critiquing Internet Sources

Today, the Internet provides an unprecedented amount of information by way of blogs, videos, and podcasts. Conduct a critique of one blog, one video, and one podcast, which provide information that addresses the topic of your Final Research Paper. Assess the authors’ use of bias, validity, and applicability of information. Examine the influence of web-based information on global citizenship and multicultural understanding. Then, compile a list of three factors you believe should be considered when evaluating Internet sources for use in researching information.

The paper must be three to four pages in length (excluding the title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style. In addition to the three multimedia sources you are analyzing, support your points with at least two scholarly sources. One of the scholarly sources must be from the Ashford Online Library. Cite your sources within the text of your paper and on the reference page. For information regarding APA, including samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar.

Here is what I decided to do my final research paper on.

The three topics that I decided to do my research on Physical Abuse, Obesity, and Social Media. I choose these three topics because I can narrow my research down to our children. In all three of the topics I can find plenty of research that deals with children. Focusing on children specifically will enable me to narrow my research topic down to a minimal. Those three topics help me focus on what matters the most and that’s our children. We are losing our children’s everyday to physical abuse as well as obesity and the social media. Those are good topics to outline for my research paper. Below are two scholarly sources that may prove valuable for my research paper.
