Write a 1,200-word analysis of a certain theme that you find in one of the mandatory poems for the course. However, along with providing a thematic analysis of the poem, your essay must also address such areas as meter, rhyme, symbolism, and imagery.

The authors of the poems or lyrics we are reading and analyzing for the course are addressing a wide range of humanistic, sociological, historical, or political concerns. When scholars look very closely into the themes that are contained in the words and lines, it becomes evident that the authors are asking readers to think about some very important aspects of life. Some issues, but not all, that arise out of the poems that you may wish to examine in your essay are:
*the difficulties of people succeeding under exceedingly challenging circumstances or situations of limitations or oppression.
*examining and adjusting to major political or cultural shifts in American society or imagining what a perfect society might be like.
*facing or making sense of the inevitability of death or coping with the deeply agonizing pain of the reality of the personal loss for surviving people that results from peoples deaths.
*paying tribute to the fact that some people choose to contribute to and sacrifice for society as men and women in arms, spending years as soldiers who protect the rights and freedom of their countries and the citizens.
*the historical and political struggle of African Americans to find justice and equality in America as well as also being able to express profound pride in the African American culture and experience.
*expressing how hard it is to form, nurture, understand, and sustain loving and rewarding interpersonal relationships.
*that growing up is not always easy and the process requires help and support; but even with it, the experiences during the journey from youth to adulthood might not be as easy or rewarding as people might like for them to be.
*the struggle and triumph of the human spirit while overcoming obstacles and challenges.
These are some of the ways the authors of poetry provide readers with the meaning they are trying to convey.
The single poem you select must be substantive enough in length and content to afford you with the opportunity to write 1,200 words about it.
