Journal

Course Status Report (Journal #2)

Introduction

Writing of journals is a requirement of this course as stated in the DMIT259 course description. The submission of an actual journal would not be appropriate however we can provide a commentary on our journal or the memory of our observations and experiences. So write a “reflective” report based on such content. The content will be considered above length. I will not count words unless content is an issue.

Guidelines

Prepare your submission as a formal communication document according to the following guidelines:

  • Use report standards as provided in previous Business Communications courses. This document provides a sample of the expected report format and document structure.
  • Adequate content will require a minimum of 800 words. Try to keep your submission within 1000 words.
  • A key requirement in a journal is its personal “voice”. Avoid describing what you did in the class. Instead, write about your thoughts, feelings and experiences while involved in course activities. Don’t merely describe what happened, personalize it. The goal of a journal is not to report, but rather to reflect.
  • Strong journals link one’s personal experience to the course materials. Use examples from your own life – family, school, associations – to articulate your thoughts.
  • A suggested technique is to log your thoughts as they occur then refer to this record as you are composing the journal.

Suggested Content

Some questions to consider while forming your thoughts are provided here. Please do not merely answer the questions but rather use the questions to prod you memory and stimulate your creativity.

The Course

  • Is this course providing useful information for the short term? Do you see it being useful for the long term (i.e. in the workplace)?
  • Are the activities appropriate to the learning endeavor? Describe what works for you and what doesn’t.
  • Would guest speakers be a good thing? What topics would you like to hear about?
  • Are you inclined to get involved in role-playing of scenarios?
  • Provide suggestions for activities to add interest and interactivity?

Team Dynamics

  • Is working in teams an effective way to complete assignments?
  • Have there been any issues or conflicts within the team? How were they resolved if at all? Was the team contract used?
  • Are you able to participate freely in team discussions and decisions? Are other team members dominating or withdrawing?
  • Describe your relationship with team members. What is your comfort level?
  • Do you consider yourself an asset to the team?

Workload Distribution

  • Describe the process of completing assignments as a team. Is it equitable?
  • Has the work been completed during class hours? If time outside class was required, how was it managed?
