Reading response instructions:
By asking you to write a reading response I am encouraging you to not just passively read a text but read it actively i.e. think about the reading and reflect upon it.
Perhaps you want to choose a text or week when you found yourself marking up the text a lot. Perhaps you were excited by an idea or concept and impressed by what these ideas accomplished or how elegantly they were elaborated. Or on the contrary you found yourself disagreeing a lot because a theory/ idea/ thesis was insufficiently substantiated or it was contradictory. Either way use these feelings to craft an analytical reading response that lays out the problems/ ideas/thesis addressed in that week and state why that idea/ thesis excites you or disappoints you; the underlying assumptions of that argument; the key insights that the argument may offer or what it obfuscates. Your reading response should also put the set of readings you chose in conversation with other readings from different weeks and state how they might elaborate/ contradict/ substantiate/ lay the ground work for other ideas/ concepts discussed in class.
