SOCIETY AND THE MEDIA SOC105 Class Introductions Due Date Monday, August 6, 2018 9:00 AM Assignment 1: Position Paper One Media and Society Due Week 5 and worth 250 points This is the first of two (2) position papers based on the following scenario to be completed in this course. Imagine that you are running for a state office (e.g., governor, senator, or representative) and you have to prepare a position paper for a debate on controversial issues in the news. (Select one (1) of the topics addressed in the first four weeks of this class.) You will want your position paper to demonstrate critical thinking, sound logic, valid claims, personal passion, and credible support that is cited correctly because the paper will be provided to the news media before the debate and will be scrutinized by the media and reported on regarding these criteria. Your professor will serve as your close advisor whose job is to review the paper and provide feedback to you on the papers strengths and weaknesses. Note: If your score is below 90%, you will have the opportunity to revise the paper. This is an option and is not required. Your score could possibly be improved by up to 10%, not to exceed a final score of 90%; but, your score cannot be reduced. Revisions are due by Week 8. Write a two to three (2-3) page (700 to 1,200 words) paper in which you: Introduce your position using a thesis statement in the first paragraph, including a quote, question, or statistic from your reliable sources and an overview of the main points you will cover. (Its important to grab the audiences interest and inform the audience of what the main and support points are.) Provide two or three (2-3) major points to support your thesis statement. (Put each major point in a separate paragraph.) Provide one (1) paragraph in which you identify and answer an expected argument against your view. Organize arguments and support your claims effectively. Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements: Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the students name, the professors name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length. How have the materials shaped your thinking, how has your thinking shifted, and what are your current conceptions of the course themes?

For your final assignment, you will prepare a 13 page paper ( double spaced) term paper covering: A) the ways in which your understanding of gender and violence have shifted as a result of materials covered in the course; and, B) how this reframed conception of gender and its relationship to violence can be applied practically to your intended professional or academic work in your chosen field. This paper will draw from major theoretical themes covered in the course, explicitly stating how particular materials, incuding readings and course discussions, have contributed to your conception of gender and violence. This is not only a reflective paper; it should emphasize how your increased understanding of topics covered in the course can be applied to the work that you plan to (or currently) engage in through your professional or academic career. Your grade will be assessed on your ability to articulate the ways course materials have contributed to an evolution in your understanding of gender and violence, and your analysis of the potential to bring the theoretical frames presented in the course to bear on your professional work.

Impact of Correctional Theories & Punish

You will gain an understanding of the evolution of correctional philosophies and the correctional system in the United States. The corrections process is a result of society responding to deviance. Responding to deviance has evolved in many ways around the globe. The United States has its own evolution of corrections. This LASA will explore the origin and evolution of prisons from the design of Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon (all-seeing) Prison to today’s modern prison systems and the prison privatization industry.Any inquiry into the origin of prisons requires students to include an overview of the correctional eras in the United States, beginning with the origin of the Walnut Street Jail in Philadelphia in 1790 and through the crime control era of today. It is necessary that you examine the organization of corrections and include the changes in the external society that led to the policy changes in corrections and correctional philosophy. You will assess the purpose, implementation, and effectiveness of corrections, including the major reasons for the movement toward prisonization starting in the 1960s and the evolution to today’s current corrections practices.Tasks:You recently completed a summer work-study program at the Centervale Corrections facility. This experience has confirmed your interest in pursuing corrections as a career, and you have started taking classes in corrections at Centervale University. As part of your introductory course you are to evaluate, compare, and contrast the historical origins of the correctional enterprise in the United States and the impact of correctional theories and punishment around the globe in a 1500-word, APA style paper (57 pages of content, not including the title page, abstract, references, and table of cases), using a minimum of 10 references and three United States Supreme Court cases dealing with prison conditions, prisoner rights, and access to medical treatment.Chapter five, “Prison Systems,” of your textbook will give you some rudimentary information on the current types of prisons; you will supplement this with empirical research in order to fully explore modern prison systems and respond to the following:Examine the correctional eras in the United States starting with the first era in the 1790s and covering the various eras to include the major reasons for the movement toward prisonization in the 1960s to present practices.
Examine the historical evolution of the Panopticon (all-seeing prison style) developed by Jeremy Bentham and the impact of this style on modern system architecture and the use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.
Analyze the political changes in society and the impact of correctional rationales on correctional practice; include how special interest groups and the current intolerance for criminals have forged correctional philosophies.
Compare and contrast the impact of correctional theories and punishment on the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the correctional enterprise system.
Examine the use and the constitutionality of the prison privatization industry; include analysis of stockholders’ influence on rehabilitation and what classification of prisoners should be incarcerated in private prisons compared to state prisons (i.e., minimum, medium, maximum, and super-max). Articulate your opinion based on empirical research and citation of court cases and reference materials from academic and scientific journal articles.
Consider the future of corrections. Compare and contrast the formal and informal social control around the globe and the impact the social control has on the future of corrections policies. Reference a modern prison system, either in your state or in another state, from your research.
Include an APA-formatted reference page that links back to your in-text citations and supports your recommendations. Remember, you cannot have only in-text citations or only references. You must have both because in-text citations and references link to each other.

Compare and contrast three classic patterns of parenting and their effect on children. Give clear examples.

All assignments MUST be double-spaced, with a font size of 12, and relatively free of spelling, typographical, punctuation, and grammatical errors ———- Use this writing style: The point is one that you make it should be your observation, your idea. The illustration you use to support your point (either a quote or paraphrase) is the authors voice you will be summarizing a specific section of the essay or quoting the author directly. The explanation is your voice again: you are letting your readers know how the quote or paraphrase youve chosen shows your point, develops or connects to your thesis, and why it is important for your overall idea. Examples are a great way to demonstrate your understanding of the material. ———- ONLY use this resource: The textbook, The Developing Person Through the Life-Span, 8th edition by Kathleen S. Berger. ———- This unit introduces the developing person between the ages of 2 and 6. This period is called the play years, emphasizing the central importance of play to the biosocial, cognitive, and psychosocial development of preschoolers.
