HIS 100 Project 1: Topic Exploration Worksheet Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.
Your first longer term assignment in this course is to complete a topic exploration worksheet. The work you do on this topic exploration worksheet will directly support your work on two other longer-term projectsa research plan and introduction and a multimedia presentationthat are due later in the course.
One of the prime benefits of studying history is that it allows us to learn about who we are and where we came from. The people and events of the past can often shed light on the conditions and social norms of the present. Having historical awareness can inform various aspects of your life as well as future aspirations. Learning from past failures and successes can shape ideals and values for years to come.
In this course, there are three longer term projects that that will help you understand the fundamental processes and value of studying history. In the first project, you will choose a topic or theme from the research kit that is interesting to you (from the options provided) and complete a topic exploration worksheet that asks you to break down the event, investigate the types of research you might need to do to learn more about it, and develop research questions. In the second project, you will use this worksheet to complete a research plan and introduction. You will choose one of your research questions and do some secondary source research (using the sources provided in the research kit), speculate on primary source needs, and use the information to write the introduction and thesis statement for a possible research paper (the entire paper is not completedjust the introduction). In the third project, you will create a multimedia presentation that explores both major developments in historical inquiry as well as the value of examining history.
This topic exploration worksheet assignment will assess the following course outcome, which you focused on throughout Theme 1:
Develop questions about foundational historical events that inform personal assumptions, beliefs, and values using evidence from primary and secondary sources
Prompt
Choose one of the provided topic categories that intrigues you. Answer the questions on the Topic Exploration Worksheet template Provided. You will do some preliminary research on your topic, as well as create a plan for what else you might need to learn.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
This may include assumptions, beliefs, or values related to the topic. Be as detailed as possible.
Pearl Buck
II. What questions do you still have about the topic that you would like to explore? From these questions, identify two questions about the topic that you would like to explore further in this course. Be sure to address why these questions are important to you personally and to society.
III. Identify which secondary sources would help you address these questions.
IV. Identify which primary sources would help you address these questions.
V. Based on this research of your topic, detail what you have learned about it. Be sure to provide the web address of any internet sources. Supporting Work and Resources
Throughout Theme 1, there are opportunities to work directly on different elements of the topic exploration worksheet.
1. In Learning Block 2-2, you will choose one of the available topics provided and discuss what you already know about the topic. This is Part I of the worksheet.
2. In Learning Block 2-3, you will be presented with problematic research questions. You will identify the problem and propose replacement questions. This will provide practice for the research question portion of Project 1. You will then develop some research questions related to your topic and describe why they matter to you personally and why they matter to society. This is Part II of the worksheet.
3. In Learning Block 2-4, you will work to finalize your topic exploration worksheet.

Current Information and Communication Technologies

With so much attention focused on health care reform, it is important that nurses be given the opportunity to use high-quality technology tools. These tools can increase access to vital medical information, promote effective communication among health care professionals, and improve the patient experience. By actively seeking out and adopting these tools, nurses can greatly enhance the quality and safety of care that they provide. This Discussion focuses on identifying quality technology tools that increase the ability of nurses to provide safe, effective care. To prepare: Review the various technology tools described in this weeks Learning Resources. Identify a recently adopted information, education, or communication technology tool in your specialty area. Reflect on how it is used and how its use impacts the quality of care. Consider how your identified technology tool might impact nursing practice if it were more widely used. What are some barriers preventing increased usage? How could wider implementation be facilitated? By Day 3 Post a description of a current or new information, education, or communication technology tool that is being used in your specialty area and assess its impact on the quality of care. Highlight the effect that increased use of this technology would have on nursing practice and discuss the barriers that are slowing or hindering its adoption. Summarize how adoption of the technology tool could be facilitated.

Promoting Good Self-Perception, Positive Behavior, and Mental Wellness

Promoting Good Self-Perception, Positive Behavior, and Mental Wellness Growth and development issues have a tremendous impact on self-perception, behavior, and mental wellness in pediatric patients. It is important for children to have a realistic perception of where they are in terms of growth and development to function socially and to have good overall health. A negative self-perception may cause children to develop behavioral and mental health issues or may make existing issues less manageable. In your role as the provider, you must promote good self-perception, positive behavior, and mental wellness in children. You must also support parents by offering strategies that will help their children understand themselves and grow into happy, healthy young adults. To prepare: Review this weeks media presentation, as well as Self-Perception Issues and Coping and Stress Tolerance: Mental Health and Illness in the Burns et al. text and the American Academy of Pediatrics article in the Learning Resources. Select one of the following age groups: infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, or adolescents. Select one self-perception, one behavior, and one mental health issue common among members of this age group. Consider strategies for mitigating each issue that promote good self-perception, positive behavior, and mental wellness in the age group you selected. Reflect on how you might educate parents on implementing these strategies with their children. Think about resources that you can recommend to parents for additional education and/or support. By Day 3 Post a brief explanation of one common self-perception, one behavior, and one mental health issue for the age group you selected. Then, explain strategies for mitigating each issue that promote good self-perception, positive behavior, and mental wellness in this age group. Explain how you might educate parents on implementing these strategies with their children. Finally, suggest resources that you might recommend to parents for additional education and/or support. Read a selection of your colleagues responses. By Day 6 Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days who selected different age groups than you did. Based on your personal and/or professional experiences, expand on your colleagues postings by providing additional insights or different perspectives. Develop criteria to determine whether a journal article is peer-reviewed or to authenticate information retrieved from a non-peer-reviewed web resource.

As a scholar-practitioner in the field of school counseling, you use peer-reviewed journal articles as a key component in your scholarly writing and research. However, there are also times when it is acceptable to use non-peer-reviewed articles. It is your responsibility, as a future scholar-practitioner, to know what constitutes a peer-reviewed article and when it is acceptable to use non-peer-reviewed articles in scholarly writing. For this Discussion, review this weeks resources. Select one peer-reviewed article and one non-peer-reviewed article on a topic of your choosing. In addition, explore the importance of using peer-reviewed articles and when it may be acceptable to use non-peer-reviewed articles as a scholar-practitioner.Post the titles and URLs of both articles you selected.
