Requirements The purpose of this assignment is to immerse yourself in a community project and relate your learning to that experience. Sustainability includes communities and people just as much as the environment so all areas need to be considered.
Reading and reflecting on the course readings will: 1) enrich and illuminate your perspectives before embarking on the immersion experience; 2) provide a common language for your written work and 3) guide your thoughts for the written assignment.
Instructions:
a) For this assessment you will sign up to and then participate in one volunteering event during the semester. Some options for volunteering (though you may come up with your own ideas too) are: Student Volunteer Army http://www.sva.org.nz/ Volunteering Canterbury http://volcan.org.nz and Christchurch City Council https://www.ccc.govt.nz/parks-and-gardens/volunteer. In previous semesters students have done beach clean-ups, planted trees, weeded council tree areas, helped in rest homes, community events, and with disability Canterbury among many other things. You may already do some volunteering that you would like to use for this assignment.
b) After your experience, you will write a reflection paper that includes the following:
i. Date and address of where the experience took place. Length of time you were there. Brief description of the setting and experience. (200 words)
iii. How might business become involved with this experience in the future and what challenges would they face in doing this? (500-600 words)
iv. How could your volunteer experience become a green job? (300 words)
c) Remember to relate your experience to the literature/course material. This means you might have to search for relevant literature using the library databases.
APA formatted referencing is expected as well as a reference list.
Databases that should be used are Business Source Complete [EBSCO] or Google Scholar. Both of these can be accessed via the library website.B.Com Learning Outcomes

3) Students will be aware of and understand the nature of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand, and its relevance to their area of study and/or their degree.
4) Students will observe and understand a culture within a community by reflecting on their own performance and experiences within that community.
5) Students will comprehend the influence of global conditions on their discipline and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.
Paper learning outcomes Identify and discuss external factors and forces, particularly the environment, consumerism and globalization, that shape business activities and vice-versa.
Identify and discuss conflicting ideologies of the social and environmental responsibilities of business and how these affect business practices.
Identify useful and effective business practices for responding to the needs of society and the environment.
Evaluate such practices in relation to a sample of New Zealand companies.
Assurance of Learning This assessment will be used to partially assess the following BCom Learning Goal:Students will comprehend the influence of global conditions on their discipline and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.This is met by assessing the Learning outcome
Students can identify, consider and debate perspectives, processes and impacts relating to the culture and identity of multiple stakeholders, drawing on theory and practice when considering issues in their discipline or field of study.
