Research findings indicate that close relationships with family and friends are an important source of happiness.

Please give your opinion
Happiness is effected by social relationships, work, leisure and religion in many ways. They all are in conjunction with one another. Typically, if you are happy it will reveal itself during the interaction with coworkers, church members and perhaps with the interaction with your immediate family members. Happiness is the ability to overcome obstacles. Besides, life challenges can come and go; its how you choose to cope that can make you happy or sad. Others see happiness as primarily contentmentthe inner peace and joy that come from deep satisfaction with ones surroundings, relationships with others, accomplishments, and oneself. Still others view happiness mainly as pleasurable engagement with their personal environmenthaving a career and hobbies that are engaging, meaningful, rewarding, and exciting (Lumen, 2018). If one isnt happy internally that will reflect their social and leisure life because they could choose to isolate themselves from others. Social support is sometimes necessary to cope with happiness. (Branscombe & Baron,2017). With work and being unhappy it can lead to tardiness and poor work ethics. If it is related to work its important to learn to forgive which assist in a better well-being. Such relationships are possible for people everywhere, regardless of their personal or societal monetary wealth. (Branscombe & Baron, p. 424). Religion tends to make the inference that things could always be worse and almost forces
people to look towards the brighter side. It increases patience and hope that
long suffering or the need to be healed is always a possibility.Without happiness, if youre a servant at church it could also display through your facial expressions and actions towards others. However, the good news is that there are always things to do to deescalate stress including eliminating those who contribute to it. ReferenceBranscombe, N. R. & Baron, R. A. (2017). How could you modify or extend this study using one of the other research approaches? Be specific and use an example for support.

Research Education
Assignment One
Locating and Characterizing Research Studies in Three Genre
Value: 20%
Due: Tuesday October 2, 2018
It is important that you have a basic understanding of the characteristics of three approaches to research as we have identified them: (1) realist/scientific/post-positivist (quantitative), (2) subjective/interpretive/constructivist (qualitative), and (3) critical/transformative. To get an overview of the characteristics and differences among the three genres refer to Chapters 1 and 2 of Creswell (2012), Cohens Chapter 1, and particularly the two charts: Characteristics of Research Genres and Philosophical Stances. This assignment is intended to assist you in exploring these three approaches used in conducting educational research. Familiarizing yourself with research in education and in the social sciences generally means that you should be able to identify the research approach used by social scientists.
Background
There is considerable diversity in how educational researchers approach their research as well as in the methods they use. The three approaches mentioned provide a framework that attempts to make sense of this wide array, and hopefully helps us to better understand the research that we read. A number of the methods used by researchers fall generally within these three main categoriesbut we recognize that there are others which do not (e.g., feminist methods and philosophical analysis).
There are different labels applied to the various research approaches. The breakdown we use parallels the one put forth by several authors including Cohen, Manion, and Morrison (2007; also 2003). These authors differentiate between positivist research, which can be thought of as traditional scientific, and naturalist research, which is interpretivist, even anti-positivist. These two categories were historically labelled quantitative and qualitative, which indicates the type of data that is common to each approach. The quantitative and qualitative language is very common, and it is what Creswell (2012) uses. Cohen et al. further identify the category of critical inquiry, which includes the political and idealogical contexts in which research is conducted and that impinge on the research process. The intent in this approach is to deliberately emancipate individuals and groups, to transform society, not just to understand them as is the overriding goal of the first two approaches.
Cohen et al. (2007, p. 27; also 2003) summarized the central concern of each of the three thus:
Realist/scientific/post-positivistprediction and control
Subjective/interpretive/constructivistunderstanding and interpretation
Critical/transformativeemancipation and freedom.

Assignment Task
Find three research papers on a topic of interest, one representing each of these research approaches (but not mixed methods).
Choose a topicpresumably a research area of interest to you (e.g. class size, inclusion, technology in the classroom, differentiated instruction, homework, classroom assessment, full day kindergarten, ESL). It is preferable to use a common theme for all three articles, but you may need to use a different topic for an article because some topics do not lend themselves readily to all three approaches. Use your knowledge of the characteristics that define the three genres to select the three articles so that each is clearly representative of the approach. Choose only credible, peer reviewed journals. Do not use newspapers or popular magazines.
To find articles, you can use the MUN Libraries Web site. You can access journals on-line by selecting E-journals on the library web site (check also the Library Tutorial). (To log on to the library as a MUN user, use your library card and PINif you do not have a PIN contact the Library.) You will also need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader to read the various journal files (Adobe Reader can be downloaded free by going to the Adobe website). Adobe allows you to download a .pdf file of the article.
It may be useful to develop search criteria to find the articles. This means thinking about appropriate key words to use in your search. For example if you are interested in effective teacher professional development you may start with teacher professional development. You may then need to narrow your search using more specific key words like “mathematics” or “learning communities”. You may also choose key words that represent branches of the particular tradition of inquiry in which you are interested, like “interpretive” or “feminist”.
Characterize the study according to five important descriptors of the particular genre.
The article is to be selected based on the characteristics for that particular genrerealist/scientific/post-positivist (quantitative), subjective/interpretive/constructivist (qualitative), or critical/transformative. Begin with the Characteristics or Philosophical chart and the information found in your textbook, and choose the five characteristics you will use to apply for each study. Include the three abstracts in your paper, and the reference for each abstract. You do NOT have to use the same characteristics or philosophical stances for the three abstracts. You are asked to include the abstracts in your assignment, but you will need to read the entire study to understand the research and should refer to the study to support the characteristics you choose.
Part 1. (a) List and describe five characteristics (you may mix from both charts) or philosophical stances of the appropriate genre which apply to each of the three studies you have chosen. For each characteristic or philosophical stance, explain in your own words what the characteristic or philosophical stance means (you may use quotes from Creswell and others), and state clearly how this characteristic or philosophical stance applies to the article (use an example from the article for support). Three or four sentences for each characteristic or philosophical stance are appropriate.
As an example, a common characteristic that is used to distinguish realist/scientific/post-positivist (quantitative) and subjective/interpretive/constructivist (qualitative) is from data representation. Quantitative research uses numerical data and qualitative research often uses words as data. Quantitative research often asks questions such as what is the effect of or what is the difference These questions are commonly answered through statistically analyzing numerical data. Qualitative research asks questions such as what does it mean to or what do girls think about These questions are commonly answered by coding quotes from the participants into themes. (Please do not use this example in your assignment.)
(b) For each article, briefly explain why you think the authors decided upon the research approach that was used in the study. HINT: The reason should be related to the problem or purpose of the study. Then briefly explain why the other two research approaches were not chose. Give brief examples from the articles to support your explanations.

Part 2. Read the three attached abstracts. Decide whether each study fits best with realist/scientific/post-positivist, subjective/interpretive/constructivist, or critical/transformative research. Choose one characteristic and one philosophical stance from the charts for each abstract, and provide an example from each abstract to support each characteristic and philosophical stance.
Part 3. Choose the research approach which you think best fits your worldview. You may find that you share characteristics or philosophical stances from more than one approach, but one approach may dominate. For part 2 of the assignment, you may also consider the mixed methods research approach. Choose three characteristics or philosophical stances for the research approach and connect these to your research interests. Use examples to support your reasoning. To illustrate, I might choose mixed methods and say that for one philosophical stance, epistemologically there are many kinds of knowledge that are both important and valid. Thus, if I am researching whether professional development has benefited teachers, I would value the teachers thoughts about what they learned and how they think they are implementing the new teaching approach, and could interview teachers. I could also use a measure of student achievement to see if the student results would complement or expand the teachers thoughts. In this way, I consider both kinds of knowledge valid and important.
Format
Include the abstract for each article, including the complete reference, in the body of your assignment. Simply copy and paste the abstract from the website where you found the article.
The assignment may be completed in a grid/table format or whatever you prefer for clarity and organization.

Do you believe that Americans may be somewhat more ethnocentric than people in the other Western industrial nations? If so, why might this be the case? If not, why is this widely believed?

One Hundred Percent American There can be no question about the average Americans Americanism or his desire to preserve this precious heritage at all costs. Nevertheless, some insidious foreign ideas have already wormed their way into his civilization without his realizing what was going on. Thus dawn finds the unsuspecting patriot garbed in pajamas, a garment of East Indian origin; and lying in a bed built on a pattern which originated in either Persia or Asia Minor. He is muffled to the ears in un-American materials: cotton, first domesticated in India; linen, domesticated in the Near East; wool from an animal native to Asia Minor; or silk whose uses were first discovered by the Chinese. All these substances have been transformed into cloth by methods invented in southwestern Asia. On awakening he glances at the clock, a medieval European invention, uses one potent Latin word in abbreviated form, rises in haste, and goes to the bathroom. Here, if he stops to think about it, he must feel himself in the presence of a great American institution: he will have heard stories of both the quality and frequency of foreign plumbing and will know that in no other country does the average man perform his ablutions in the midst of such splendor. But the insidious foreign influence was invented by the ancient Egyptians, the use of glazed tiles for porcelain in China, and the art of enameling on metal by Mediterranean artisans of the Bronze Age. Even his bathtub and toilet are but slightly modified copies of Roman originals. The only purely American contribution to the ensemble is the steam radiator, against which our patriot briefly and unintentionally places his posterior. Returning to the bedroom, the unconscious victim of un-American practices removes his clothes from a chair, invented in the Near East, and proceeds to dress. He puts on close-fitting tailored garments whose form derives from the skin clothing of the ancient nomads of the Asiatic steppes and fastens them with buttons whose prototypes appeared in Europe at the close of the Stone Age. This costume is appropriate enough for outdoor exercise in a cold climate, but is quite unsuited to American summers, steam-heated houses, and Pullmans. Nevertheless, foreign ideas and habits hold the unfortunate man in thrall even when common sense tells him that the authentically American costume of G-string and moccasins would be far more comfortable. He puts on his feet stiff coverings made from hide prepared by a process invented in ancient Egypt and cut to a pattern which can be traced back to ancient Greece, and makes sure they are properly polished, also a Greek idea. Lastly, he ties about his neck a strip of bright-colored cloth, which is a vestigial survival of the shoulder shawls worn by the seventeenth-century Croats. He gives himself a final appraisal in the mirror, an old Mediterranean invention, and goes downstairs to breakfast…. Breakfast over, he places upon his head a molded piece of felt, invented by the nomads of Eastern Asia, and, if it looks like rain, puts on outer shoes of rubber, discovered by the ancient Mexicans, and takes an umbrella, invented in India. He then sprints for his trainthe train, not the sprinting, being an English invention. At the station he pauses for a moment to buy a newspaper, paying for it with coins invented in ancient Lydia. Once on board he settles back to inhale the fumes of a cigarette invented in Mexico, or a cigar invented in Brazil. Meanwhile, he reads the news of the day, imprinted in characters invented by the ancient Semites by a process invented in Germany upon a material invented in China. As he scans the latest editorial pointing out the dire results on our institutions of accepting foreign ideas, he will not fail to thank a Hebrew God in an Indo-European language that he is a one hundred percent (decimal system invented by the Greeks) American (from Americus Vespucci, Italian geographer). Source:Linton, Ralph. (April 1937). One Hundred Percent American. American Mercury, Vol. 15, No. 1. Discussion Questions:2. In what ways does a degree of ethnocentrism contribute to the positive functioning of American culture? How much is too much? What problems can result from excessive ethnocentrism?
