Research Critique

Applied Research Methods – Research Critique
The purpose of this course is to make you informed consumers of research and over the semester
you have gained knowledge of the components of research that will assist you in this final
assignment. The research critique consists of reading three research studies and answering several
questions about each. All three studies have been provided for you. The studies selected for the
critique are as follows:
Article 1:
Guerette, Rob T. (2007). “Immigration Policy, Border Security and Migrant Deaths: An
Impact Evaluation of Life Saving Efforts under the Border Safety Initiative.”
Criminology & Public Policy, 6(2): 201-222.
Article 2:
Kovandzic, T., Sloan, J., and Vieraitis, L. (2004. “’Striking Out’ as Crime Reduction
Policy: The Impact of ‘Three Strikes’ Laws on Crime Rates in U.S. Cities.” Justice
Quarterly, 21(2): 207-239.
Article 3:
D’Alessio, S; Stolzenberg, L., and Terry, W. Clinton III (1999). “Eyes on the Street”:
The Impact of Tennessee’s Emergency Cellular Telephone Program on Alcohol-related
Fatal Crashes.” Crime and Delinquency, 45(4): 453- 466.
For each of these research articles perform the following:
1. Identify the research design used.
2. Specify the type of data used to conduct the analysis.
3. Identify the sampling procedure employed.
4. Specify the dependent variable of the study.
5. Present the key findings of the study.
6. Identify at least 3 limitations of the study (e.g. threats to validity, reliability, etc.) and
explain each.
Provide separate answer sheets for each article and identify your responses to the specific
question above that you are answering. Your responses should be typed, 12 point font, and single
spaced. Your answers are due on the last day of the week that the final exam is scheduled). Be
sure to explain each of your answers fully. You should strive to be as comprehensive in your
answers as possible as if you were explaining your answers to a lay person who knows nothing
about research methodology. A complete response to the questions will include 1) a statement of
the answer, 2) an explanation of what that is or means, and 3) a specification of exactly why
the given component of the research study constitutes what you have stated.

Linguistic

Part One: Morphemes, Bound & Free
For the first half of this assignment you’ll need to identify the morphemes in the text that follows. Begin by separating morphemes with slashes then list all the morphemes and classify them as free or bound. Keep in mind that free morphemes must be related to the original word. For example “firetruck” consists of two free morphemes “fire” and “truck,” but “some” is a single morpheme despite the fact that “so” and “me” could be considered individual free morphemes. This is because the meaning of “some” is not based on the morphemes “so” and “me.”
Example for Part One
Here is an example to help you format your assignment.
The capture would be performed robotically, and the relocated asteroid would become a destination for astronauts to explore—and, possibly, for space entrepreneurs to mine.

The text for Part One
Here is the text you must use to identify bound and free morphemes.
Some gentlemen dined at an economical restaurant. They found the service to be unacceptable and wished to express their unhappiness to the management. The manager was unavailable, so they brought the leftovers home to their dog who resided in a doghouse in the backyard.
Part Two: Phonemes and the International Phonetic Alphabet

For the next portion, identify all the phonemes in the text that follows. You may need to do a bit of research to find the symbols you need to express this. This link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet_chart_for_English_dialects) will take you to the Wikipedea page for the IPA symbols most used by the various English dialects. To assist you in entering this for submission you can use the following website to type your answers: http://ipa.typeit.org/full/. Then simply paste your results into a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file and upload it here.
Write your answer in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

Example

Here is an example to help you format your assignment.

My name is Christian Petersen. I am a college instructor.
ma?ne?m?z k??stt???np?it??s??. a?æme?k??l?d????st??kto?.

The text for Part Two

Here is the text you must translate into IPA.

There was an old woman who swallowed a fly. I don’t know why she swallowed a fly. Perhaps she’ll die.

This is an example of a good way to format the whole assignment.

We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat (pp. 129-148)

Read chapter five of Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat (pp. 129-148). Write a short MLA-formatted analytical essay on this chapter. Very important: READ Short Essay Assignment Instructions.rtf

Use correct MLA format: I won’t grade your paper until you get it right. I will ask you to fix the formatting, and I will assess a late penalty. If you need to review MLA, see the handouts in MLA/Punctuation/Grading

If you need a reminder of basic essay structure, see GradingStructure for 5 paragraph.rtf. You are not required to use a five-paragraph structure, but it’s a good template.

This essay carries a lot of grade weight, so do your best work.

Short Essay on Chapter Five from Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat

Topic: You can analyze any aspect of chapter five “Prom Queen Kills First Deer on Sixteenth Birthday.” Your topic does not need to be “deep” for this short paper, but your MLA formatting and your clarity of writing are very important. I want to make sure you know how to write a short, well-organized analytical essay with a thesis and topic sentences. I also need to see that you can format in-text citations and a Works Cited page. Finally, I’ll be checking to see if your grammar and punctuation skills are at a passing level for this course.

Length: No more than 2 pages, doublespaced. You don’t need more than 2 pages to demonstrate your writing skills.

Format: You can follow the 5-paragraph essay format if you like (see handout in Course Material), but it’s not required.

Works Cited: At least 2 citations in the body of your paper. You must quote the chapter at least once, and you must quote at least one outside source (you can use an Internet source, another book, an interview, etc.). Note the “Recommended Reading” and “Notes” sections at the end of the book and consider using a source from these lists as your outside source. Include parenthetical (in-text) citations and a separate Works Cited page. Note: you are expected to know how to use MLA before you enroll in Engl 102.

Layout: Use MLA format for the body of your essay and for your works cited page. Refer to the handouts under the MLA tab in Blackboard if you need a refresher. Failure to use MLA format for the body of your essay will severely impact your grade.

Purpose: As noted above, I want to assess your writing and MLA formatting skills. The assignment also requires you to do minimal research so that you can quote one outside source.

WARNING: DO NOT SUMMARIZE THE CHAPTER IN THIS PAPER. You must analyze/discuss a certain detail (or details) that interest you. Focus on a narrow aspect of the chapter. If your essay is nothing but summary, you will receive a zero for the assignment. If you’re struggling to find a topic for this short paper, take another look at the Reading Response guidelines for suggestions
