Main Task: Assess a Major School Violence Incident
For this Signature Assignment, you have read a short webpage about suggestions for dealing with the media, reviewed the Guide for Preventing and Responding to School Violence, located a recent case of school violence and researched the response made by school administrators. For your final task, you will complete a 12-15 page paper analyzing your chosen incident, and the subsequent response from school administrators. Your paper should include; but is not limited to the following:
• Introduction
• Objective of Paper
• Describe your incident
• Describe the response made by school administrators
• Analysis:
o What were the policies before the incident?
o What were the expectations of the students? – were they aware of policies related to this incident before it happened?
? Were strategies in place to create a culture of safety?
o Where were the policy changes that came out of this incident?
o What educational activities were done to inform and support the student population?
? Guidance provided
? Identifying abusive behavior
? Did any instructional practices change due to the incident?
o How was the incident communicated to the media?
o How was the incident communicated to parents?
• Summarization
o Summarize media action surrounding the violence and what was reported by media outlets. You may select a specific news station, newspaper, or reputable magazine.
o Summarize and evaluate the response by police, administrators, parents, students, and others directly involved with the incident. How did the local community as a whole react?
o Create a policy or policies based on your analysis of the response and best practices in school safety to prevent and respond to school violence similar to the case explored in this activity. What would you have done differently as a school leader?
