Topic: You are a new health services administrator at Good-Patient Hospital located on the east coast of Florida. Upon reviewing different aspects of the facility, you realize that there is no facility disaster management plan in place. You are specifically worried about hurricanes but recognize that there may be other types of disasters that need attention. Good sources to look is publications from the JCAHO and the Florida Dept of Health.

Original Post You have three options available to you to develop the plan. These include: 1) assign the task to one of the junior health services administrators within the facility; 2) form a planning committee of employees to develop the plan; or 3) bring in an experience contractor to create the plan. In your original post discuss: 1) Which of these options, or combination of options, do you think will help you create the best plan possible? and 2) What types of organizations outside your facility might be important partners to include in the plan because they would be key in responding to a disaster?

Changing Corporate Behavior to Respond to Changing Demographics

Changing Corporate Behavior to Respond to Changing Demographics

Objectives

The aim of this assignment is to assess how the operations of a company might change when the demographic make-up of regions surrounding its operating locations change.

Instructor Comments

An important source of information for analysts of corporate behavior is census data. Statistics Canada and the U.S. Census Bureau host demographic data for their respective countries and make it available in many useful ways. In both cases, online researchers can access demographic profiles of towns, cities, counties, provinces and states in a matter of seconds. This is relevant for a course in change management as the demographic makeup of a region or locale can differ dramatically in different regions of the continent. Changes to the demography of a company’s operating locations can dramatically alter how it does business. The challenges of operating a business differ when the surrounding population is predominantly French as opposed to English or any other language. It also differs when much of the population is comprised of 1st generation immigrants as opposed to individual’s families that have lived in a region for decades. Different demographic make ups of surround environments affect how a company sells, what is sells, who it hires, how it hires and why it hires. This assignment is about exploring how a change in office location might alter how a company does business.

Assignment

You should base your responses to the following questions on the insight found on the following websites.

•Federal Express http://www.fedex.com.
•Statistics Canada http://www.statcan.gc.ca.
•U.S. Census Bureau http://www.census.gov.

In this situation, Federal Express has decided to open three new offices. One is in St. John’s Newfoundland, a second is in Miami, Florida, while a third office is in Surrey British Columbia. Please assume that they currently do not have operations in those cities. When using the Statistics Canada website, under the Find Statistics heading, click on Community Profiles. When using the U.S. Census Bureau website, under Data Finder, look at Population Finder.

Please answer the following questions:

•Please examine the demographic make-up of these three communities. What are the important ways that they differ?
•How much bigger or smaller would Fedex’s operations need to be to serve the local markets of Miami and Surrey? How did you arrive at your estimate?
•Based on the demographic data, how might Fedex’s workforce differ in Surrey and Miami from that in St. John’s?
•What might Fedex do differently to serve each of these three markets? In other words, how might it slightly customize service to respond to each of these markets?
•So what?

Please limit your response to this assignment to three single spaced, typed pages. Please cite your sources in the text and please reference them at the end of your assignment. Please end your write-up with one paragraph that summarizes what you think is the importance of this assignment.

Changing Corporate Behavior to Respond to Changing National Cultures Objectives

The aim of this assignment is to assess how a change in the national culture of a company’s operating environment alters how a company conducts business.

Instructor Comments

Just as different demographic profiles can lead to changes in how a company operates and organizes itself so to can operating in locations with different national cultures. This exercise introduces you to three useful online sources of information regarding different national cultures. Each allows users to sort by country and within each country explore different aspects or features of that culture. One important sources of comparative information is hosted on a website titled Geert Hostede.com which is named after the researcher who developed the dataset. A second data source is hosted by the Centre for Intercultural Learning of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the Government of Canada. A third source is the website of a U.K. based company, Kwintessential.com.

This assignment helps learners understand how a company’s practices will need to change depending upon the country within which it operates.

Assignment
You should base your responses to the following questions on the insight found on the following websites.

•Newfoundland Capital Corporation http://www.ncc.ca.
•Centre for Cross Cultural Learning http://www.intercultures.ca.
•Geert Hostede.com http://www.geert-hostede.com.
•Kwintessential http://www.kwintessential.co.uk.

In this situation, Newfoundland Capital Corporation has decided to expand from its home market of St. John’s, Newfoundland. It is opening an office in Mexico City, Mexico and Dusseldorf, Germany.

Please answer the following questions:

•How might the training of the company’s sales force need to change in order to conduct business in these two new markets?
•How might the company alter its negotiation practices for each market?
•How would business communications practices need to change for each market?
•How will decision making and the use of hierarchy need to change for the company’s offices in these two markets assuming that local staff be hired to run the offices?

Please limit your response to this assignment to three single spaced, typed pages. Please cite your sources in the text and please reference them at the end of your assignment. Please end your write-up with one paragraph that summarizes what you think is the importance of this assignment.

Discussion Post #8

Topic: The setting is a 100-bed nursing home facility which employs about 135 employees and none of them are currently unionized. About one quarter of these employees are either administrators or supervisors and cannot be unionized. There has been significant turnover in leadership at the facility in recent years which has resulted in changing rules and procedures for all staff. Management staff that has remained thinks that they have done everything they can to keep employees happy. They even held a company barbeque last summer for everyone. They say that their hands are tied because the revenue streams for the facility have decreased because of cutbacks in reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid, and private payers are also starting to negotiate lower rates. The nurses are increasingly being asked to work double shifts and patient care is starting to suffer. Wage increases have been non-existent or minimal. Supervisors appear to be ill-trained and are grouchy with everyone. The free bus passes employees used to get as a benefit have been revoked. One of the nursing staff decided she was fed up and is now trying to organize her colleagues under a union.

Original Post You are a health care administrator within the facility. You are informed by one of your supervisors that this nurse is attempting to organize employees into a union. Assume that you are opposed to this action, what kind of LEGAL steps would you take to try to discourage the formation of a union or to show that it really isn’t needed? (Note that you will have had to follow the instructions in the learning module for this week, which required you to “jump to” the NLRB website to successfully respond to this question).

Response Post Respond to one of your classmate’s post from the perspective of the nurse union organizer. Describe why such working conditions are a problem for you and why starting a union is the best solution to those problems.

Sources: To receive full credit, you must cite at least one academic or government source to support your position in your original thought post. Please do not cite your book – this assignment requires you to do additional work. The following websites are not appropriate academic citations: Wikipedia.com; Ehow.com; Ask.com; About.com or anything in the same genre.

Business Ethics

Choose one of the following issues and write a five paragraph essay in which you provide three reasons why the issue is ethically significant. The paragraphs of your essay should conform to the following guidelines:
a.Paragraph 1:
Provide a brief introduction to the issue. Your introduction must make clear to the reader exactly what issue you are choosing and what you take to be the boundaries of the issue. For example, if you were writing on criminal punishment, you would need to make clear whether you were considering only imprisonment and harsher penalties, or whether you were also considering penalties such as fines for speeding. (Note, you may not write on criminal punishment, this is just an example). The final sentence of your paragraph must be a thesis sentence which lists the three reasons you will put forward in your essay.
b.Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4:
The first sentence of each paragraph must be a topic sentence that clearly states what reason you will be considering. The remainder of the paragraph should make clear why this is a reason for thinking the issue you have chosen is ethically significant. Each paragraph must contain at least four sentences.
c.Paragraph 5:
Conclude your essay by very briefly reviewing the three reasons you have discussed and why they show the issue is ethically significant. Your paragraph should contain a paraphrased restatement of your thesis.

Your ultimate goal in this assignment is to create a thesis in relation to a debatable ethical topic from the list below and to begin examining the reasons that you have for the position that you take on the topic. Please read the instructions for the Final Paper before starting this project. The following are the general topics from which you must create your thesis. The questions under each topic are meant to help inspire your thinking. You should not attempt to write on all the questions. The Final Paper will only be five to six pages, so it is important that you use these questions to create a much more specific topic that you will address in your Final Paper. Again, do not attempt to answer all of these questions. Instead, use these questions as a springboard for the creation of your own concrete and clearly defined thesis statements. To the right of the topics, you will find the weeks in which these topics are covered in the course. Please go to those weeks and begin using the resources in those weeks to gather information for your papers.

◦ Under what circumstances (if any) would it be ethically required to end that life?

The following are recommendations that will guide you as think about and complete this assignment:
• Please use the Ashford Writing Center Thesis Generator to help you generate your thesis. (https://awc.ashford.edu/writing-tools-thesis-generator.html)
• An issue is ethically significant if there appear to be good reasons that support different perspectives in relation to the ethical issue. For example, there appear to be good reasons to place dangerous people in prisons. At the same time, there also appear to be good reasons to give people as much freedom as possible or to try to rehabilitate them and get them back into society when they break the law. Your issue should be something that can be debated.
• Ethical issues are issues that relate to how people ought to live or how society ought to function. What you are going to eat for breakfast is not an ethical issue in general. However, if you believe that eating animals is wrong because it causes them harm, then what you eat does become an ethical issue. What clothes you wear is not generally an ethical issue. However, if those clothes are manufactured by child slaves, then what one wears becomes an ethical issue.
• The reasons that you present in your paper should abide by philosophical standards. They should be backed in evidence and logical reasoning. Believing something because one has been taught to believe it is not a sufficient reason to hold that belief. Avoid using anecdotal evidence and be sure to attempt to prove that your reasons are grounded in evidence that is convincing.

The paper must be 400 to 700 words in length (excluding title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style. For information regarding APA, including samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, located within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar.
