You will find online an example of a Professional Code of Ethics from a public or community safety profession. You will evaluate the Code of Ethics by answering a series of structured questions.

1. Find a relevant Code of Ethics for a public or community safety profession – ideally the profession you are planning to work in or already work in. To find a relevant Code of Ethics start by searching in the Illinois Institute of Technology Centre for the Study of Ethics in Professions: Codes of Ethics Online at

If you aren’t able to find anything in the IIT website, try Googling the name of your current or future profession plus “code of ethics”. Here’s a site for a U.S. Firefighters Codes of Ethics in Palm Beach found that way:

And another for the Code of Ethics for the International Association of Emergency Managers:

Criminal Law for Criminal Justice

During an undercover investigation, Officer Cline witnessed Defendant #1 purchase a bag of what appeared to be marijuana and LSD. When Officer Cline approached the dealer (Defendant #2), he was given a similar bag. Following the purchase, officers approached and arrested both defendants on narcotics violations. Forensic tests later revealed that the contents of the bag were nothing more than honey and dried leaf matter and rolling paper coated with lime extract. The defense attorneys for both defendants have argued that no crime was committed and the charges should be dropped. As the prosecutor, would you drop the charges? Be sure to address the charges for both actors here and please explain your answer.

Task

Pick an intercultural issue such as the following (note these are suggestions only – feel free to delve into any area that interests you):
•    Canada and Multiculturalism;
•    Identity of Newcomers;
•    Conflict and Harmony;
•    Media and Multiculturalism;
•    Multiracial Families (marriage, adoption, and/or generation); and
•    Human Rights.

These topic areas are very broad. You may wish to narrow your investigation to something more refined within one of these topic areas.

Research your selected topic using the Internet, the lesson notes for this course to date, the library, and personal experiences. Analyze how the topic is related to intercultural communication and determine how you identify with this issue in your life. In identifying with this issue, please provide specific examples.

Conduct

This assignment is to be prepared as a presentation that you will provide to your classmates. You are to prepare your presentation in MS Word or Rich Text Format (note – not everyone has access to Power Point; consequently, using this format may preclude some students from viewing your presentation). Try to make your presentation attractive through the use of graphs, diagrams, pictures, etc. to illustrate your presentation. Remember, this assignment is a presentation and as such you want to make it appealing to your audience.

Your presentation is to include at least three (3) academically relevant sources such as text books you consulted, the Internet, movies, documentaries, or interviews with individuals. Be sure to cite these resources in your presentation using APA format.

The length of your presentation is to be no more than four (4) pages double spaced. It should have an Introduction outlining the topic, a discussion area in which you present the findings of your analysis, and a conclusion.
