You may find the How to Read a Film handout (posted on Moodle under Helpful
Handouts) useful as well.

Questions you might ask (you need not answer all of these):
How is the music video structured?
Where is the video set? Is the setting realistic or abstract? Does the setting change?
Who appears in the music video? What are they doing? What are they wearing? How are they
moving?
Is there a narrative (i.e., a story)? If so, how is that narrative conveyed? If there isnt a
narrative, how is the action organized?
Where/at whom and how are viewers supposed to look (think about the readings we did about
the gaze)? What filmic and camera techniques are utilized?
Whats the pacing of the video? Are there slow or fast moments?
What kinds of voices do you hear (singing, speaking, rapping, etc.)? Whose voices do you
hear? How would describe the quality of those voices?
What instruments can you identify?

Is there an identifiable, consistent beat (something you can tap your toe to)?
How is the song structured? Are there any recurring patterns or sections? Do any of the lyrics
repeat?
What is the songs dynamic range? Is it mostly loud, or are there quieter moments as well?
How fast or slow is the song? Does it feel like a walking tempo, something you might dance
vigorously to, etc.?
Are there any non-musical sounds/noises that you can identify? If so, what are they, and why
do you think they are there?
What feelings do you experience watching and listening to the video?
Who do you think the intended audience is?
What do you think the video is trying to convey?

ELABORATIVE REHEARSAL, SELF REFERENCE EFFECT, DISTRIBUTED STUDY/SPACING EFFECT.

For this paper you will be writing a letter that you submit in to me through Canvas. In order to write this letter first you must carefully read about memory in our book by Griggs. The reading is complex so most students will have to read it more than once. Then imagine that you are writing a letter to a high school senior who will be starting college next fall. In the letter that you write, include advice based on what you have learned from our reading about memory. In your letter be sure to include an explanation and discussion, in your own words, of the following terms: Your letter should also include a specific example of how to use each of the terms you discuss; you may use real examples from your life, or you can make up examples. The point of your letter is to offer advice based on what you have learned about memory that will help a high school senior to do better in college. Also, please include one thing that you believe makes college more fun than high school.
Your completed essay should:
1.Be in the form of a personal letter make it feel like a real letter (yes, typed).
2.Include a clear explanation, in your words, of the 3 terms above.
3.Include a clear example of each of the terms you have explained.
4.Include clear advice based on the explanations and examples.
5.Also include one thing that you believe makes college more fun than H.S.
Each of the five elements described above should be integrated into your letter. Be sure
to write the letter so that it reads like a real letter. I expect your letter will be about 1 to 2
pages long.

Should doctors be allowed to help terminally ill patients commit suicide by Derek Humphry and Daniel Callahan, Health

Reaction question:Whether or not to support doctor assisted suicide is a personal decision. Therefore, this reaction paper does not ask your opinion. Rather, take another look at each perspective in this chapter. (Dr. Stammers, Dr. Callahan, Dr. Moore, Derek Humphry) Each doctor writes in a non-emotional way about a very emotional, controversial subject. Which writer conveys a more persuasive essay?
Why? What supporting details or evidence is most convincing? What language/writing choices do they make, which make a big impact and influence someone’s opinion? Explain the reasons for your answer and give examples.

Discuss how the lack of interoperability in this example impacted quality and safety of care for the patient.

Interoperability and Student Perception (15% of final grade) United States Department of Health and Human Services. (2009). The Human Side of HIE: The Experiences of the Wife of a Wounded Soldier. Retrieved from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrgHtc5DKIM. Guidelines The purpose of this assignment is twofold. The primary focus is on understanding the concept of interoperability and to use critical thinking to discuss why it is important in healthcare technology. This will be done through discussing aspects related to interoperability as well as using a provided example (provided video) to address the human impact as well as the students perspective. The secondary focus is to write your findings as a mini paper using up to date literature to support your writing along with APA documentation. This will assist you for the two papers that are assigned in this course. Step 1. Define interoperability as it relates to electronic health records and/or patient data. Step 2. Discuss why interoperability is important for patient care. In this section discuss what benefits are associated with or expected to happen with appropriate use of interoperability. In addition, discuss possible concerns or challenges related to interoperability. Step 3. Watch the video The Human Side of HIE: The Experiences of the Wife of a Wounded Soldier. Discuss how the lack of interoperability impacted the quality and safety of care for Ted Waite and contributed to fragmentation of care and frustration for him and his wife and caregiver, Sarah Waite. Step 4. Use evidence-based literature to support your writing in APA format. Beyond citing the video, use 1-2 additional references of your choice to support your work. The following format is required for this paper. Use this outline with Level 1 and Level 2 headings to facilitate organization of your paper. Please see OWL (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/16/). Text in brackets [ ] should not appear in your paper. In 2015, the city of Melbourne, Australia created a “tree-mail” service, in which all of the trees in the city received an email address so that residents could report any tree-related issues.

As an unexpected result, people began to email their favorite trees sweet and occasionally humorous letters. Imagine this has been expanded to any object (tree or otherwise) in the world, and share with us the letter youd send to your favorite.

List and describe five characteristics (you may mix from both charts) or philosophical stances of the appropriate genre which apply to each of the three studies you have chosen.

It is important that you have a basic understanding of the characteristics of three approaches to research as we have identified them: (1) realist/scientific/post-positivist (quantitative), (2) subjective/interpretive/constructivist (qualitative), and (3) critical/transformative. To get an overview of the characteristics and differences among the three genres refer to Chapters 1 and 2 of Creswell (2012), Cohens Chapter 1, and particularly the two charts: Characteristics of Research Genres and Philosophical Stances. This assignment is intended to assist you in exploring these three approaches used in conducting educational research. Familiarizing yourself with research in education and in the social sciences generally means that you should be able to identify the research approach used by social scientists.
Background
There is considerable diversity in how educational researchers approach their research as well as in the methods they use. The three approaches mentioned provide a framework that attempts to make sense of this wide array, and hopefully helps us to better understand the research that we read. A number of the methods used by researchers fall generally within these three main categoriesbut we recognize that there are others which do not (e.g., feminist methods and philosophical analysis).
There are different labels applied to the various research approaches. The breakdown we use parallels the one put forth by several authors including Cohen, Manion, and Morrison (2007; also 2003). These authors differentiate between positivist research, which can be thought of as traditional scientific, and naturalist research, which is interpretivist, even anti-positivist. These two categories were historically labelled quantitative and qualitative, which indicates the type of data that is common to each approach. The quantitative and qualitative language is very common, and it is what Creswell (2012) uses. Cohen et al. further identify the category of critical inquiry, which includes the political and idealogical contexts in which research is conducted and that impinge on the research process. The intent in this approach is to deliberately emancipate individuals and groups, to transform society, not just to understand them as is the overriding goal of the first two approaches.
Cohen et al. (2007, p. 27; also 2003) summarized the central concern of each of the three thus:
Realist/scientific/post-positivistprediction and control
Subjective/interpretive/constructivistunderstanding and interpretation
Critical/transformativeemancipation and freedom.

Assignment Task
Find three research papers on a topic of interest, one representing each of these research approaches (but not mixed methods).
Choose a topicpresumably a research area of interest to you (e.g. class size, inclusion, technology in the classroom, differentiated instruction, homework, classroom assessment, full day kindergarten, ESL). It is preferable to use a common theme for all three articles, but you may need to use a different topic for an article because some topics do not lend themselves readily to all three approaches. Use your knowledge of the characteristics that define the three genres to select the three articles so that each is clearly representative of the approach. Choose only credible, peer reviewed journals. Do not use newspapers or popular magazines.
It may be useful to develop search criteria to find the articles. This means thinking about appropriate key words to use in your search. For example if you are interested in effective teacher professional development you may start with teacher professional development. You may then need to narrow your search using more specific key words like “mathematics” or “learning communities”. You may also choose key words that represent branches of the particular tradition of inquiry in which you are interested, like “interpretive” or “feminist”.
Characterize the study according to five important descriptors of the particular genre.
The article is to be selected based on the characteristics for that particular genrerealist/scientific/post-positivist (quantitative), subjective/interpretive/constructivist (qualitative), or critical/transformative. Begin with the Characteristics or Philosophical chart and the information found in your textbook, and choose the five characteristics you will use to apply for each study. Include the three abstracts in your paper, and the reference for each abstract. You do NOT have to use the same characteristics or philosophical stances for the three abstracts. You are asked to include the abstracts in your assignment, but you will need to read the entire study to understand the research and should refer to the study to support the characteristics you choose.
For each characteristic or philosophical stance, explain in your own words what the characteristic or philosophical stance means (you may use quotes from Creswell and others), and state clearly how this characteristic or philosophical stance applies to the article (use an example from the article for support). Three or four sentences for each characteristic or philosophical stance are appropriate.
As an example, a common characteristic that is used to distinguish realist/scientific/post-positivist (quantitative) and subjective/interpretive/constructivist (qualitative) is from data representation. Quantitative research uses numerical data and qualitative research often uses words as data. Quantitative research often asks questions such as what is the effect of or what is the difference These questions are commonly answered through statistically analyzing numerical data. Qualitative research asks questions such as what does it mean to or what do girls think about These questions are commonly answered by coding quotes from the participants into themes. (Please do not use this example in your assignment.)
(b) For each article, briefly explain why you think the authors decided upon the research approach that was used in the study. HINT: The reason should be related to the problem or purpose of the study. Then briefly explain why the other two research approaches were not chose. Give brief examples from the articles to support your explanations.
(c) How could you modify or extend this study using one of the other research approaches? Be specific and use an example for support.
Part 2. Read the three attached abstracts. Decide whether each study fits best with realist/scientific/post-positivist, subjective/interpretive/constructivist, or critical/transformative research. Choose one characteristic and one philosophical stance from the charts for each abstract, and provide an example from each abstract to support each characteristic and philosophical stance.
Part 3. Choose the research approach which you think best fits your worldview. You may find that you share characteristics or philosophical stances from more than one approach, but one approach may dominate. For part 2 of the assignment, you may also consider the mixed methods research approach. Choose three characteristics or philosophical stances for the research approach and connect these to your research interests. Use examples to support your reasoning. To illustrate, I might choose mixed methods and say that for one philosophical stance, epistemologically there are many kinds of knowledge that are both important and valid. Thus, if I am researching whether professional development has benefited teachers, I would value the teachers thoughts about what they learned and how they think they are implementing the new teaching approach and could interview teachers. I could also use a measure of student achievement to see if the student results would complement or expand the teachers thoughts. In this way, I consider both kinds of knowledge valid and important.
Format
Include the abstract for each article, including the complete reference, in the body of your assignment. Simply copy and paste the abstract from the website where you found the article.
The assignment may be completed in a grid/table format or whatever you prefer for clarity and organization.
Include references (to document your articles and additional references that you use). Use APA style.

Provide what you take to be the best justification(s) for that position, and characterize those justifications in detail.

In this paper you are to take a stand on the question whether God (here defined as the Greatest Conceivable Being) exists and provide the best justification (not just an explanation) for that position that you can. Recall that we are conceiving of God–whether or not God exists–as a being who is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent, and possessing any other characteristics making it the greatest conceivable. There are three major positions that one might take concerning the existence of such a being, namely theism, atheism, and agnosticism. Please write the paper according to the following outline: (i) Tell the reader what position you will be defending concerning God’s existence. (For instance, if you are defending theism you may hold that Pascal’s Wager is a strong justification for that position; in this case you should explain the Wager argument in such a way that an intelligent reader not yet familiar with philosophy will be able to follow you.) (iii) Next, imagine how someone might reasonably object to the justification that you provide for your view, and explain how they might formulate those objections. Be sure to provide the strongest objections that you can think of; dont address an opponent of straw! (iv) Finally, by rebutting those objections show why the reader should nevertheless adopt your position on the question of Gods existence. (v) Close the paper with a brief summary of what you have achieved therein. (Please note: If you wish to argue that agnosticism is the most reasonable position concerning Gods existence, you should consider at least one apparently compelling argument for theism, and at least one apparently compelling argument for atheism, and show why neither argument is in fact persuasive. In both of these discussions, make sure to consider the most powerful argument or arguments that you can think of.) I need help starting a outline
