In this paper you are to take a stand on the question whether God (here defined as the Greatest Conceivable Being) exists and provide the best justification (not just an explanation) for that position that you can. Recall that we are conceiving of God–whether or not God exists–as a being who is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent, and possessing any other characteristics making it the greatest conceivable. There are three major positions that one might take concerning the existence of such a being, namely theism, atheism, and agnosticism. Please write the paper according to the following outline: (i) Tell the reader what position you will be defending concerning God’s existence. (For instance, if you are defending theism you may hold that Pascal’s Wager is a strong justification for that position; in this case you should explain the Wager argument in such a way that an intelligent reader not yet familiar with philosophy will be able to follow you.) (iii) Next, imagine how someone might reasonably object to the justification that you provide for your view, and explain how they might formulate those objections. Be sure to provide the strongest objections that you can think of; dont address an opponent of straw! (iv) Finally, by rebutting those objections show why the reader should nevertheless adopt your position on the question of Gods existence. (v) Close the paper with a brief summary of what you have achieved therein. (Please note: If you wish to argue that agnosticism is the most reasonable position concerning Gods existence, you should consider at least one apparently compelling argument for theism, and at least one apparently compelling argument for atheism, and show why neither argument is in fact persuasive.
