Blood Meridian

Blood Meridian is often called an Anti-Western or, in Harold Bloom’s words, “the ultimate Western.” Construct an argument showing how the book achieves this, and what this might illuminate about the philosophical concerns of the text. In what ways does Blood Meridian confirm the conventions of the Western genre? In what ways does it subvert the conventions of the Western? To what end or effect?

Your paper should be 5-7 pages: brief, concise, and substantive is best. In addition, your paper should: include a title; be double-spaced, paginated (bottom right corner), in 12- point Times New Roman or Calibri font, in standard essay format. Provide your name, the course name, and the date, all single-spaced, in the top left corner of the first page. Produce in-text citations in the MLA format

Your paper should:
– State an original thesis about Blood Meridian, and explore it by
scrutinizing the language of key passages in the text.
– Be addressed to an educated reader who has not been present
for our class discussions, but is familiar with the text. (In other words, use plot summary when necessary to place quotes in context, but keep it to a minimum!)
– Demonstrate improvement in points of style, grammar, and writing mechanics, as well as in engagement with the text and structure of the argument.
– Be clearly organized and proofread for grammar and spelling.

Your paper should not:
– Consult, or make an argument that would require consulting, outside sources. Your argument should be about some aspect of the text: its narrative, characters, imagery, etc. If you have a topic already in mind that you believe requires reference to outside sources, speak to me.
