TERM PAPER INSTRUCTIONS
Research Project: Prominent Architect
This research project will allow you an additional opportunity to prove and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the work of a prominent architect and how effective was his architectural response to the cultural, politic and economic context of his time. You need to explore how this person influenced modern architecture and Interior Design.
Each research paper will address the following aspects of the chosen architect:
Background: The circumstances and conditions framing the cultural, social and/or political values in which this person developed his architectural skills.
Precedence: The Architect’s formal education and his intellectual influences. The determining factors and/or needs and/or design philosophies that shaped the architectural monuments produced by the architect.
Location: The extent of the territory or territories in which this architect worked.
Achievements: The type(s) of accomplishment(s) and original approach towards architecture and interior design attributed to his work. Generally architects experiment different stages (or styles) in their life, as part of the process of achieving maturity in architecture. Make sure that you also use pictures of floor plans and sections of several buildings to explain its functionality and/or originality in design.
Influence: The source of inspiration and impact exerted upon later architects and/or the architectural field.
Examples: The specific architectural monuments and interior treatments that represents the achievements of the selected architect. These examples can be arranged according to the architect’s different stages, if that is the case. An explanation of the importance of the buildings selected for this purpose must be included (why is this monument a representation of achievement?).

FORMAT: Use the MLA format for writting papers. You can research about this format in MDC library. There are plenty of websites from other universities regarding this format. You need to include at least one footnote per page regarding the source you used while writting the text. All pictures must have footnotes referencing their source.
Typical paper structure:
1) Index
2) Introduction
3) Body: Background, Precedence, achievements, etc
Examples of buildings and interior architecture (may be according to an Architect’s different stages in his professional evolution).
4) Conclusion
5) Bibliography
BIBLIOGRAPHY: You need to include at least three hard copy books. You can use websites from other universities and scholars, professional organizations, architectural magazines, academic and professional journals, and newspaper articles, but as a complement to your bibliography. Do not use Wilkipedia, as this is not a trustable source.
Approach and Presentation
You may gather, as much information as needed but the text (writing) of the research project(s) must be in your own words. This means that you should not, under any circumstances, copy directly from any book used in your research.
The Final Research Project must be presented in an electronic media file (word processor—preferably WORD), double-spaced and with a minimum of 1,000 words (could be longer if necessary) and emailed to me (jualvarez@aii.edu) on its deadline: Thursday, June 9, 2016— this means that it must reach me before 6:00 PM on that date. This is a fixed deadline. A cover sheet stating the project’s name, student name and date will identify the project. Cover page does not count as a project page. This means that you will not count the words included in the cover sheet as part of the 1,000 words-minimum-requirement. Font: Arial
Illustrations should be neatly arranged and identified and must be part of the text file. The words used to identify each of the illustrations should not be counted as part of the 1000 words-minimum-requirement. Use good quality pictures to illustrate your paper.
2
Pictures must not be blurry with a resolution too low nor too big to affect the maximum size limit required to email your paper (10 megas). Keep it under the maximum size. Note: If in case the final Research Project file becomes too large (maybe due to its illustrations) to be emailed, the Student is responsible to burn it in a CD and turn it in to me on the same deadline date.
Evaluation
Projects will be evaluated on the basis of accuracy and comprehensiveness. Grammar and spelling will also be counted. Grammar and spelling may be corrected by using a word processor.
