The Old Testament focus is primarily the Hebrew people. The spiritual formation of ancient Israel had very much to do with their model of education.

Education and formation (and transformation) are linked in Old Testament Hebrew thinking. Other Ancient Near Eastern (ANE) cultures will not be discussed in this unit. The New Testament focus will be primarily with the early Christian church. The spiritual formation of the early church had very much to do with the concept of discipleship. Even though the Apostle Paul never uses the Greek word for disciple, he is obviously concerned about the concept. One cannot read the pages of the New Testament and not get a clear understanding that Jesus and the early church leaders were intensely interested in discipleship. It is very important that you read the attached materials BEFORE opening the PowerPoint slides. Both will provide you with valuable information to better understand the slides. There are two readings before the slides. For both the Old and New Testament study, first read the relevant PDF file. Second, read the article found at the website link. Third, read Teaching for Spiritual Growth Chapter 14. Last open the PowerPoint slides and review them thoroughly. Your final project (due in Unit 7) will be choosing either the works of Loder or Fowler and analyzing their theory in light of what the Bible says, specifically described for you in this unit.
