answer the following 3 question. you must agree or disagree to it. you must use 4 resources.
Question 1.
I find that it is a toss up between two of the Medici family. Giovanni and Cosimo. I see that some of my classmates had gone with Cosimo completely. I do not disagree with this opinion. He used his fortune to gain control of Florence and to get rid of his enemies. He also ruled from the fringes and kept his rule as low key as possible, but everyone knew that he was in control. He did bring stability to the area with becoming trading partners with former enemies like Milan, he used the banks wealth to make this happen because Sfarza the ruler of Milan is a customer of the bank. Cosimo during his reign, wanted to maintain a balance of power between the states of Italy. This maintained by trade and the expansion of the arts.
Giovanni on the other hand amasses great wealth through banking. He also uses it to further political gains. And essentially sets Cosimo up for greatness. In my opinion this shows a great deal of power. Giovanni put all the pieces in place for the rest of the family to move ahead.
Politically, Cosimo was the more powerful Medici, but without Giovanni he would never had the power that he gained.
question 2.
The Medici family was the pioneer for the formation of many artists associated with the Renaissance, for instance Leonardo Da Vince [1]. The rise of the Medici family from obscurity to enormous wealth that of prominent merchants and bankers, is said to have marked the triumph of the capitalist class over that of the guild merchants and artisans. Until 1532, the democratic constitution of Florence, Italy was outwardly upheld, but the Medici’s exerted the actual control over the government. They grew heavily into politics, ruling Florence for more than a century [2]. And they used much of their power to help the poorer citizens and to encourage artists to flourish and produce greater and greater work [3]
My favorite of these family member is Cosimo de Medici, because he took over the family banking business. Becoming a successful businessman, Cosimo built up his father’s fortune and established business connections all over Europe. He generously supported the arts, commissioning the building of great cathedrals, and commissioning the best artists of the age to decorate them. He demonstrated great support for education, establishing the Platonic Academy for the study of ancient works [4]
question 3.
f I were to choose which Medici had the greatest impact it would be Giovanni Medici. He risked his own lively hood to further himself and his family name and gave support to an individual who was elected to pope. Due to his support Giovanni Medici was given the papal account. The hard work that Giovanni completed allowed for the furthering success of the Medici Family. If Giovanni Medici had not done the things he did the Medici family may never have held power of any kind in Italy. The accruement of the Papal account allowed for the Medici’s to reach nobility with in Italy further expanding the Medici’s power and influence. Although the other members of the family had great successes I do not feel they would have ever reached those successes without the jump-start that Giovanni Medici provided to them. Although there is no right or wrong answer upon which Medici had the greatest impact I don’t feel the family success would have been as vast without the initial start given by Giovanni.
