Required:
You are working as a research analyst in the Private Client Division of a large Irish Financial Intermediary. You have been asked to prepare a report for a major client who has a long-standing relationship with the division.
The client is considering investing in the shares of a large multinational corporation listed on one of the major stock exchanges (Pfizer). However, before she reaches any such decision she is interested in getting an impartial assessment of the firm’s current financial performance. As such, you are required to prepare a report in which you assess the firm’s current financial performance as at the date of the most recent annual report.
Your assessment should be based on the firm’s current and past financial ratios, as well as the financial ratios of its leading competitors and the industry on average. You should assess the firm’s financial performance under the following five headings:
• Profitability
• Efficiency or Activity
• Liquidity
• Gearing or Financial Risk
• Investment
Structure of report:
The report is to be prepared in a professional manner and should be suitable for presentation to the client. All ratios calculated should be included in tables in an appendix to the report, with the figures used to calculate the ratios clearly identifiable. You must also include the financial statements of the firm and its competitors in the appendix (only the pages from which the relevant figures are obtained should be included).
Referencing
• Sources of quantitative data on the firm, its competitors and the industry in general must be referenced in full. (This includes but is not limited to page numbers used for each reference)
• Any articles, reports, commentaries or other material that is drawn upon for the report must be referenced in full
Marking
Marks will be awarded under the following categories:
• Presentation and clarity of report
• Proper implementation of the ratios
• The extent of the analysis undertaken
• Clarity of, and logic underlying, any analysis provided
• Aspects of report that distinguish it from others
