Assignment #1
Using what you have learned from this unit’s study activities, summarize both the Lea and Street and the Mullen articles. Make sure to paraphrase, quote, and document your sources as necessary (see p. 53 in Behrens and Rosen for quick tips).
Your summaries should be no more than one paragraph each. This paragraph should be well-organized and should include
• The main points of the author.
• The supporting evidence for those points.
• Any paraphrases or quotes that you determine to be essential each summary should include at least one paraphrase and one quotation.

Assignment #2
Before you begin this assignment, complete the readings for this unit.
Using what you have learned in this unit’s study activities, as well as the critical reading and summarizing strategies you learned in the previous unit, write a critical review of the article you have chosen for this unit.
Your critical review essay should follow the principles you have learned from the Behrens and Rosen text. When writing and organizing your essay, refer to (and follow) “Guidelines for Writing Critiques” on page 70. In addition, pay particular attention to the section “Stage Four: Drafting (pp. 232-252); this section will help ensure that your critical review includes a thesis, introduction, and conclusion. Note, however, that the bulk of your own essay should be the middle section where you analyze and respond to the essay, showing your critical thinking, reading, and writing at work.
Also, keep in mind best practices for using sources in your papers. You will primarily paraphrase the material you use and will usually use direct quotations when the power of the ideas are lost with paraphrasing. While you must always cite your sources, to best maintain academic integrity, it is important to put into your own words entirely the information you use from other sources. One way to ensure you do this is to read and comprehend the material then take a break. Doing this allows you to “lose†the language of the author so that you can better paraphrase the information.Your critical review essay should be 2–4 pages long.
Portfolio Reminder: You will include this version of the essay in your final portfolio. (You will also have an opportunity later in the quarter to revise and improve the essay.)
Submit your review in the assignment area.

For your course project, you will be selecting two out of the three perspectives and applying them to an organizational diagnosis. Your project proposal should be a 3-4 page paper that informs the instructor of the following:
1. Identifies the two perspectives you expect to use for your final project.
2. Provides some background information about the organization you plan to study.
3. Answers the following question: Although you will be an observer in your final project, if you were to conduct academic research in your chosen organization using two perspectives, what methodological differences might there be between the two approaches? Answer this briefly in the proposal and develop this into a section for the final project.
4. Identifies which variables contribute to organizational effectiveness.
5. Uses APA, grammar, and create a logical, organized presentation. (You are welcome to use materials from the course room, including articles and books).
6. Includes a bibliography (references) of at least 5 resources you plan to use. You will add to your bibliography by the time you are done and you are free to change references should you find something more relevant later on in the study. You may include articles that have been suggested by our textbook authors.

Project Requirements
To achieve a successful project experience and outcome, you are expected to meet the following requirements:
• Provide the background and/or introduction to the organization that will be the subject of analysis.
• Identify two organization theoretical categories (perspectives) to use in your analysis.
• Complete an analysis and diagnosis of your chosen organization from both of the theoretical perspectives you selected, and then synthesize your findings. Be sure to explain your epistemological and ontological position consistently for each perspective.
• Examine the organizational elements, such as power, structure, and technology, and then use your theoretical perspectives to diagnose (or assess) the organization’s effectiveness including, but not limited to, the culture, roles and goals, ability to change, and conflict management.
• Explain your prognosis for the successful continuance of the organization.
• Conclude your paper with a discussion about which of the two perspectives you have chosen that most closely relates to your own philosophy and explain why.
• Support your assertions with evidence from your research that is within the two perspectives you have chosen.
• Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message. As doctoral learners, it is assumed that you will create work that is free of mechanical errors, such as grammar and spelling. Additionally, you will be graded for content and focus, critical thinking, logic, and flow, in addition to structure and organization. Failure to master academic writing deteriorates your evidence presentation and clear articulation of subject mastery. These items will be examined and considered in your grade, in addition to the project rubric.
• APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to APA 5th Edition, style and formatting.
• Number of resources: Minimum of 20 resources, which may include the textbooks.
• Length of paper: 15–20 typed double-spaced pages.
• Font and font size: APA preferred typefaces are Times New Roman, 12 point or Courier, 12 point.
