Guidelines, Rubric, & Examples for Scholarly Review Discussion Initial Post
This assignment is based on learning and critical evaluation of a specific topic with an emphasis on
using reputable research-based information to substantiate your main points.
Initial post (up to 20 points): Post a 400-600 word critique concerning any human sexuality-related
topic. When providing a link to an outside source that sparked your interest, summarize and discuss key
points from the link in enough detail that the reader gets an idea of what you are talking about. After a
brief introduction to your topic, focus on your critical interpretation of the information. Integrate 2-3
sources, with at least 1 peer-reviewed journal article. A primary objective is for you to practice checking
the credibility of your sources to determine if the information is considered a reputable source by experts
in the field. At the end of your post, ask one critical thinking question for your peers to answer. Two
samples of well-written posts with citations are provided below. In the subject line, clearly label your
post with your topic or in a way that peaks the interest of others and makes them want to read your post.
Some suggestions/questions to help you think of topics include:
Something that was discussed in one of the blog areas that I wanted to explore further:
Something important I learned about the topic from the reading or lecture notes:
Something I still have questions about (the topic):
Something that “threw me for a loop” was:
Something I shared with a person outside of this class was:
In what way has your thinking changed as you learn new information? How has research impacted these
changes?
What concepts, ideas or beliefs about human sexuality are undergoing change for you, for society, or for
others?
Something I saw in the news or in the media that was related to what we are learning in class:
*DISCUSSION POSTS ARE NOT JUST YOUR OPINION. Support your viewpoints with
relevant citations from reputable sources. Clearly justify what makes your sources reputable.
How to post your initial response:
1. Type your post into a WORD DOCUMENT to ensure proper spelling and grammar
2. Click on “Scholarly Review Discussion” link within your randomly assigned group.
3. Click “create thread”
4. Title your post with a brief description of your topic and your name.
5. Copy and paste your post into the word box
6. Click “Submit”
IMPORTANT: I recommend that you type and save posts into a Word document. In the past,
students have experienced problems with being timed out while writing discussion posts. Saving
your posts in a Word document helps you avoid having to retype an entire post. DO NOT post
anything as an attachment. Copy & paste directly into the submissions area.riteria considered for evaluation of initial post:
18-20pts Addresses a topic relevant to the study of human sexuality; demonstrates investigation of
the topic beyond own opinion; gives examples and specific details to back up what is
being said, including properly citing 2-3 reputable sources (at least one journal article);
shows critical thinking related to the topic either by showing an understanding of more
than one side of the issue, asking challenging questions about the topic and/or helping the
reader understand the process the writer went through to come to his or her conclusion.
The writer ends post with a thought-provoking question written to generate further
discussion about the topic.
