Mission Statement for CARE (NGO)

• Application: Clarity of Mission Statements
A good starting point in the process of strategic planning is to review the organization’s mission statement. Mission statements should be clear and specific and should describe the unique raison d’être of an organization. Such a mission statement gives direction to an organization’s strategy and also provides valuable information to stakeholders. It differentiates the organization from others, showing why the organization is unique and clearly outlining its purpose and goals. Lack of mission clarity may mean distortion of the purpose and outcomes of the strategic plan. In this Application, you will review the mission statement of your Final Project organization, evaluate it based on specific criteria, and suggest specific ways to improve it.
To prepare for this assignment:
• Review the section “The Mission Statement” in Chapter 4 of Strategic Planning for Public and Nonprofit Organizations. Think about the role and importance of a mission statement in a strategic plan.
• Consider whether the mission statement examples on pages 143–144 of Strategic Planning for Public and Nonprofit Organizations clearly define the purposes and goals of the organizations.
• Review the six Socratic questions on pages 138-143 of Strategic Planning for Public and Nonprofit Organizations. Consider how these questions might help in clarifying the mission of an organization.
• Review the article “Comparing Mission Statement Content in For-Profit and Not-For-Profit Hospitals: Does Mission Really Matter?” Think about why the mission statements of the hospitals in the study were unclear and ineffective.
• Call to mind your Final Project organization and review its mission statement in light of the Socratic questions.
• Select three of the Socratic questions that are addressed in the mission statement of this organization.
The assignment (2–3 pages):
• Briefly describe your Final Project organization and include its mission statement.
• Cite the three Socratic questions you selected and evaluate how clearly the organization’s mission statement addresses each. Be sure to include the part of the mission statement that addresses each question.
• Provide any necessary recommendations for improving the clarity of the mission statement.
