Individual Project: Essay

Individual Project: Essay
The first part of this course assessment is an essay. It is compulsory and contributes
50% of your overall mark on the course. It would be advantageous to read the
essay/assignment guide points on Moodle.
The word limit is 2,000 (+/- 10%) and the actual word count should be stated on the
cover page. Diagrams, tables, references and appendices are excluded from the
above word limit. Appendices should be used sensibly and only if the information is
very important and relevant to the discussion. However, detailed information
included in the appendices must be summarised and referred to in the main body of
the essay.
The deadline for the individual project/essay is Thursday, 27 November 2014 by
1400. The hand-in point is the PG office. Please note one hard copy plus one
electronic copy of each individual project/essay should be handed in following the
PG office guidance.
The Question
Critically discuss with suitable industry examples the importance of financial
statements in entrepreneurial venture.
Expectation
Please note the expectation to write using a formal academic style that includes
comprehensive Harvard in text referencing and a bibliography (at least two pages)
that shows evidence of wide and deep scholarly research using peer reviewed
academic journals, appropriate text books and authoritative web sources.2
Students are strongly advised to ensure that their submissions adhere closely to the
College regulations using fluent and accurate English and particularly font size 12,
double spacing and single sided printing.
The question uses the formulation ‘critically discuss’. Students should carefully
consider the importance of the need to provide not a descriptive paper, but ensure
clear analysis is provided, as befits a master’s degree programme.
Your paper should reflect your original work, but adopt the academic tone that
encompasses the ideas of objectivity (third person not ‘I’, moderated adjectives),
evidenced based writing (sources of opinion and data identified via Harvard
referencing).
Please note:
• The use of a range of relevant industry examples is required.
• Ensure you link your ideas to relevant academic theory.
