Lesson 8
You may have heard a person who displays little emotion described as a “stoic personality.” But what exactly does Stoicism mean in philosophy? In this lesson, we will explore the ideas of the ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus, an important figure in the development of Stoicism. Though he lived thousands of years ago, Epictetus is still an inspiration to many people as they seek a strategy for daily decision-making. During his time as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, the American Navy sailor James Stockdale used the teachings of Epictetus to help himself and his fellow POW’s survive torture at the hands of the Viet Cong.
