There is only one question for this paper: How do you conceptualize culture?1. Use all of the readings (I will upload).
2. Grapple with the two main contemporary perspectives on culture in sociology (culture as practice and culture as system of meanings) and the debate between the two.
3. Support statements with citations and information from the text.
4. Avoid the trap of relying too heavily on quotations, especially unexplained quotations.
5. Have a works cited page.–required!
6. Be well structured in their argument. I’m especially wary of a bunch of disconnected statements about culture.
7. Avoid any prescriptive or moral language in the paper.
8. Address the question of the assignment.

1. If you are searching for ways to lengthen the paper, you could also discuss how culture (as it is studied by sociologists and anthropologists) is different from what other disciplines study (such as psychology).
2. You might give some examples about what is being studied and how it is being studied (hint: wink vs. blink, thick description, language vs. speech and codes, etc.).
