Hagia Sophia

Consult 2-3 books and cite them in MLA format on last page. Do not put an introduction, conclusion, or subheadings into your paper. Launch into answering the first question as a way of introducing your topic.

The questions are:
1) FORMAL DESCRIPTION, 1-2 paragraphs
Describe your  building using the appropriate terminology from the glossary at the end of the textbook. This should be a formal, objective description, without subjective language, anecdote or unnecessary detail. If your building is quite complex, find a way to describe its most salient features, and avoid getting bogged down in the details. Be quantitative (ie. There are 17 columns across the front facade, flanked by 2 obelisks) and use geometric terms to describe the parts or whole. Mention the materials used, throughout the description.

2) CONTEXT, 1 paragraph
Some of the assigned buildings are part of a larger, intentionally designed complex; if so, describe in the same formal language the context for your building. If your building has few or no associated built structures, then explain its original context (ie. It sits atop a rugged mountain, facing a steep gorge on all sides except the north….) and explain why this is so. (ie. Greeks revered nature and often situated their religious shrines at points of significant natural topography…)

3) USE, 1 paragraph
Explain the original use for which the building was built. How does the configuation of the building respond to this use?

4) SYMBOLIC ASPECTS, 1-2 paragraphs
Builders often imbue buildings with a symbolic system of meaning, through form, materials and decoration or ornament. Explain how this works, or might work, for your building. What theories have some reliable writers put forth on this topic? Here is where you may also put forward your own idea, but you should make a good argument for it.
