- For this project you will create an instruction set that aids a new user in signing up for a (Facebook) this is my site and how to perform some of the site’s basic functions. You will be required to use many screenshots to aid the audience along with your textual instructions. Therefore, this project will require the most thought about design layout of any of our project so far this semester. You will be creating your instructions in Adobe InDesign.
Step One:
First you need to select a (Facebook) site to work with. I have provided a list of potential choices here. If you decide to use one of them, edit the wiki and place your name next to the site. I want everyone doing a different site. However, these are not the only options. You may choose one of your own if it fits these two requirements: log/in membership is required and you can see how the site might potentially be used by a business to promote or market itself. If you select a site not on the list, first run it by me. Once you have my approval, add the site and your name to the wiki.
Step Two:
Obviously you will need to sign up for the site in order to complete this project. I suggest creating and using a dummy email account if you don’t want to be spammed by them the rest of your life. Take many screenshots along the way of your initial sign-up since you can’t go back and repeat the process (at least not without creating yet another account with a new email). Spend a little time getting to know how the site works, what it does, and what kind of people uses it. This will be useful research in deciding how to write the instruction set.
Requirements:
Unlike the previous projects, I don’t have an example in the book for general formatting (though the planning questions on page 168 will prove helpful in defining the rhetorical situation). This document will be largely of your own design- and these decisions will be based on the lectures we’ve had on visual rhetoric and page design. We will also be doing a brief tutorial with the program In-Design to help you make a more advanced layout.
Basic Features:
• Specific and Precise Title
• Introduction With Background Information (what the site is, what it’s for, why one might join it)
• Sequentially Ordered Steps (for signing up and for performing at least 1 common function. For example, if you did Facebook, how to update your status)
• Screen Shots
◦ No set amount, rather used rhetorically where needed
◦ Be creative- you may want to capture a button or icon at times and insert that into a sentence.
• Conclusion That Signals Completion of Task
