Situation: A meeting was held regarding a conflict with a local school performing clinical in the emergency room and Intensive care unit. The director of the emergency room wanted the clinical instructor present when the students were performing skills such as IV starts, NG placement or lab draws. The clinical instructor would send two students to the emergency room for the experience but would be posted in the ICU with the rest of the students assisting them with documentation, and skill the patient needed but mostly explanation of treatment and care. The educator on the ICU unit expressed to the emergency room director the clinical instructor is very hands on with her students and available but is not able to be in both places. The hospital policy was read stating the clinical instructor should be readily present to assist the student in any manner needed. Another leader pulled the contract agreement between the hospital and the local school which stated the clinical instructor need to be on sight and all liability rest on the school and the instructor, not the hospital or the staff assigned to the student. The contract was last revised in the fall of 2017. The emergency director continued to feel the students should be in a shadow role when they are in the emergency room and wanted communication to go out expressing this to all of her nursing staff and other departments. The nurse educator for the emergency room stated she would send an email to the emergency room department this evening.
