ENG 103 Drama Paper Guidelines

I. Cover Page should reflect the directions given on the Packet guidelines.

II. The title you create may include the title of the play, but it should not consist exclusively of the play’s title. (A title can be as simple as A review of Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest,” but of course more creative possibilities are welcome.)

III. Next give the quotation from the David Parker critical article (selected in class), and provide parenthetical documentation. (Additional materials)

IV. Introduction: The quotation from the critical article will capture the reader’s attention. The first sentence of your paper will then connect the selected theme of the play to the quotation. Introduce the author of the critical article. The first paragraph should also introduce the subject of your review, i.e. the name of the short story under discussion and its author. If possible, give some preliminary information about both. The last sentence acts as your thesis statement. In this thesis statement you will mention the three characters you have chosen to examine and connect them to the theme.

V. The next paragraph consists of a summary of the play of no more than 5 sentences.

VI. Body Paragraph 1 focuses on the first character in your thesis. The first sentence of this paragraph is the topic sentence that introduces the theme and the first character. Include at least three brief quotations from the text to support your points. Document with parenthetical references.

VII. Transition to Body Paragraph 2, which focuses on the second character in your thesis. The first sentence of this paragraph is the topic sentence that introduces the theme and the second character. Include at least three brief quotations from the text to support your points. Document with parenthetical references.

VIII. After a transitional word or phrase include Body Paragraph 3 to focus on the third character in your thesis. The first sentence of this paragraph is the topic sentence that introduces the theme and the third character. Include at least three brief quotations from the text to support your points. Document with parenthetical references.

IX. Conclusion

X. A Works Cited page at the end includes bibliography for the critical article and the play.
