Discuss the power of aphorisms and research the role of propaganda. Write a short essay of three or four pages double spaced, detailing your discoveries and thoughts.

One of the main ideas in 1984 is that a ruling power often has the power to change history, by altering the mythologies that give the public a system of beliefs that they can identify with on a national level. In Nineteen Eighty-Four Big Brother and his hordes of staff in the various ministries set about reconstructing history through propaganda in order to create a compliant, supportive population. To this end, aphorisms are absolutely essential and entirely persuasive. An aphorism is generally understood today to be a concise, cleverly written, and memorable statement containing subjective truth or observation. The following assignment will direct you through an exploration of how propaganda is (and has been) used to further political ends, and the writing and use of aphorisms. You will be both writing and using aphorisms as you research and create. Enjoy! Part 1: Aphorisms and Propaganda (3 4 pages double spaced) Do some research and familiarize yourself with the propaganda used in any conflict or by any regime. (For example, The Communist Party in China, the Bush administration around the time of the Iraq War, World War I, etc.) Draw parallels and make connections between what you find, and the aphorisms and propaganda used by the Party in Nineteen EightyFour. Part 2: Manifesto! (2 pages double spaced) Adopting the role and perspective of Smith, write a Manifesto intended to persuade your compatriots to become insurgents in a revolution that will destroy the Party. Your manifesto can take the form of an underground, secret publication that would circulate among the population. Make sure your manifesto has a powerful name, write your own aphorisms to support your cause, and use your best creatively persuasive skills to incite major change!
