Digital Forensics Reporting & Testimony

Digital Forensics Reporting and TestimonyThe work of digital forensics is not complete when data is collected and theories confirmed as to events that have been investigated. The culmination of most investigations includes communicating this work to audiences that often have members with little technical expertise. This communication typically takes the form of written reports as well as oral testimony in front of a judge or jury in a court of law.Technology Inc. is a multinational corporation that sells a variety of technology and communications equipment across the globe. Over the past decade Technology Inc. has also acquired shares in several large technology consulting services and manufacturers of technology equipment. You are were asked to engage in the following investigation:Julie Nelson, the network administrator for Technology Inc., gets a call from the administrator of the Cisco firewalls. She indicates that she is seeing anomalies in the log files that suggest someone internal to the organization is transferring large amounts of research and development data to an external fileserver located somewhere in the Caucasus. The research wing of Technology Inc. is located in Ireland, and the firewall administrator and the network border equipment is located in the Phoenix, Arizona data center. The firewall administrator is particularly concerned because the research wing has only recently been moved, and the local administrator, a relative unknown quantity, has been given permission to create and manage local accounts. There has been a persistent rumor that this local administrator encourages employees to use their own mobile devices to collect and store corporate research data while scientists are engaged in their research. Julie reaches out to the CEO, who recommends that she hire you to come in and see if you can figure out what has happened, where the research data is being sent, and why.
When you have completed this investigation, and have developed theories as to what has transpired, you are next obligated to write a report that communicates your actions and your findings to Julie and to the CEO who hired you to do this work. Your findings could result in discovery of evidence that leads to the firing of an employee. If the employee chooses to protest those findings, you may find yourself explaining them to a court.
