As you may have discovered in the preparation for this week’s Discussion, stakeholder buy-in and commitment are important to the success of the strategic planning process, and stakeholder analysis is a tool for obtaining this support. The process of stakeholder analysis includes identifying the key people, groups, or institutions that may positively or negatively influence your organization, assessing the degree of their potential impact, and developing strategies for obtaining their support and reducing obstacles. In this Application, you will conduct a stakeholder analysis of your Final Project organization.
To prepare for this assignment:
• Review the article “Stakeholder Analysis: A Review.” Consider what stakeholder analysis entails within the context of organizational and strategic management.
• Review the selected readings in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of Strategic Planning for Public and Nonprofit Organizations. Consider methods of stakeholder analysis and the purpose they serve at different stages of the strategic planning process.
• Review this week’s course media, “Buy-In and Commitment.” Think about the benefits of stakeholder analysis and what it entails.
• Review the article “Turning Stakeholders into Advocates.” Consider what the structured approach of stakeholder management described in the article involves.
• Review the article “A Case of Stakeholder Identification and Prioritization by Managers.” Reflect on the characteristics of stakeholders that managers are most concerned with during stakeholder analysis.
• Consider the possible criteria you might use in selecting stakeholders that would make powerful partners in the strategic planning process.
• Bring to mind your Final Project organization or another organization for use in this Application Assignment.
• Conduct a stakeholder analysis for this organization. That is, using what you have read and employing some of the strategies you encountered in the Learning Resources, identify the most important stakeholders in the strategic planning process in your organization, analyze their degree of support, and plan for ways to solicit/maintain their buy-in and commitment.
