The essay is a critical analysis of Charles Johnsons novel Middle Passage, which should involve textual explication and judicious use of quotation from the novel.See the course Study guide/essay guidelines on Blackboard, which includes the grading rubric, for the basic requirements of a critical essay.[The 2nd version of the essay will involve and secondary sources, global (international) perspectives in theory and literature: African-American, African, international feminism, postcolonial, etc.]
Suggested themes to explore include:
2. African-American identity: Rutherfords search for meaning; polarized identities of Rutherford/Jackson; relationship with absent father; experience of Chandlers farm, etc.
3. The Allmuseri: their history, philosophy of being, language; the satire and symbolism of this fictional African people
4. Male-female relationships: Isadora and Rutherfordthe satire of the stereotype of the female as oppressive, attempting to domesticate the male; the couples relationship as an allegory for the division of the African-American family under (and after) slavery
5. Subjective decentering, cultural hybridity: the mutiny and the sense of the decentered interior (p. 142); Calhouns transformation into a cultural mongrel (p. 187)Papers should follow MLA form for in-text citations and Works Cited.
