In order to complete this short essay you are asked to choose a patient from your clinical practice that has a fluid imbalance this could be a patient that is dehydrated/hypovolaemic secondary to surgical or traumatic blood loss, GI losses resulting from gastroenteritis, or renal losses from diabetes insipidus. Or you may choose a patient that is overhydrated or hypervolaemic, as a result of acute renal failure, or iatrogenic fluid overload, for example. Speak to your tutor if you are unsure. In the discussion of your chosen patient you must include; An overview of the patient’s history, reason for admission/presentation and working diagnosis A description of the patients clinical presentation and subsequent clinical assessment findings – include links to underlying pathophysiology and method for assessing hydration Rationalise the fluid management plan calculated for your patient – use evidence from the literature to justify the plan Prioritise the nursing management strategies important to your patients care. Remember: using a case review as the focus of your essay is not about tracking the patients progress notes or about describing the patients in-hospital stay – for example, listing vital signs or blood results means nothing without an analysis of them.
